“Vincentian Social Justice”, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
A specific Vincentian commitment to social justice, was not one of the original hallmarks of the Congregation of the Mission, though it developed later. The “Vincentian way,” begins with experience and the followers of Vincent continued to be faithful to Vincent’s way of acting, how he lived. It was his attention to individuals in their needs that formed the basis of his attitude toward social justice, but exercised on the personal level.

“According To Our Institute.” The Charter Of The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
St. Vincent often referred to the "Institute." The term is inherently ambiguous, but its meaning as "charter" is explained here. Two versions of the "charter" are compared. Its importance lies in its continuing existence as the nucleus of the identity of the Congregation of the Mission as established by the Church.

Angelo Oliva, a brother who was one of the first Vincentians in America, is remembered for his personal qualities and artistic talents. A sculptor and mason, he spent several years constructing the church at the Barrens, which was finished in 1837. Liturgical Prayers In Honor Of Saint Vincent De Paul, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
John E Rybolt
Nineteen sets of short liturgical prayers, honoring Vincent de Paul are presented in Latin and English, accompanied by brief summaries of the texts. They span the time from 1668 to 1973. The prayers cite Vincent’s piety and ministry. They ask for the supplicants to be inspired by and endowed with his virtues, especially his charity, to continue his service. His intercession is also requested. A twentieth Anglican prayer in English is included for completeness. As John Rybolt writes, “What the Church believes about Saint Vincent, lex credendi, shows a shift in emphasis from the earliest official collects to the present.”

Vincent de Paul only pursued art as it was useful for teaching or assisting in the attainment of spiritual goals. John Rybolt describes and analyzes the two engravings in the original edition of the Common Rules. These constitute the title page and the frontispiece, which are reprinted here. Vincent approved these and they summarize the themes of his teachings. Both convey reverence for the Trinity. The title page also highlights the importance of veneration for the Eucharist and devotion to Mary. The frontispiece shows Jesus teaching or healing, and sending his apostles to continue this work. The importance of imitating …

Vincentian Education: A Survey Of Its History, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
St. Vincent de Paul did not specifically include works of education among the purposes of the Congregation of the Mission. Nevertheless he worked in many ways to foster the education of people and priests. His confreres continued this commitment to seminaries and other schools, particularly in overseas missions. Their quality was highly regarded. A review of Vincentian universities follows, together with an assessment of changes after the Second Vatican Council. These helped the Congregation to focus on St. Vincent's goal of service of the poor.
