A Study Of The Approach To Delinquent Church Members, Carl E. Zahrte Nov 1968

A Study Of The Approach To Delinquent Church Members, Carl E. Zahrte

Bachelor of Divinity

One of the most difficult and distressing problems that a minister encounters today is that of dealing with delinquent church members. Those members of a congregation who become lax in their faith through neglect of the means of grace or an evident attitude of indifference in their spiritual life constitute a problem that is not easily solved. Speaking of delinquent or inactive church members, W. F. Crossland asserts: "They constitute a challenge to every church and minister and represent one of the major problems facing the Christian Church. The aim of this study, therefore, has been to examine the extent …

The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg Nov 1965

The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is written by one who is a member of the Church catholic, by one who is a Lutheran, and by one who does not necessarily make statement of dogmatic truth the exclusive property of men within the Lutheran tradition. This is said to disparage the Lutheran heritage not at all, but to indicate that one can at least be open to different systematic formulations. The point is also made to indicate to the reader that the student was conscious of his own heritage, but that at the same time both during the research and during the writing of …

The Validity Of Baptism Performed By The Little Flock, Delbert Williams Gremmels Jun 1961

The Validity Of Baptism Performed By The Little Flock, Delbert Williams Gremmels

Bachelor of Divinity

Although there are many errors in the teachings of the Little Flock, the baptism performed by the group should be accepted as valid and re-baptism should not be required before admittance for membership in the Lutheran Church.

The Problem Of Christian And Church Fellowship, Ronald Frederick Blaess Jun 1961

The Problem Of Christian And Church Fellowship, Ronald Frederick Blaess

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of the Christian Church from the first to the twentieth century could be written in terms of its struggle to maintain, to demonstrate, or to realise this fundamental unity between the Lord Jesus Christ and His body, the Christian Church, besought of God the Father by Him in His great high-priestly prayer, and declared above by St. Paul. But is this oneness an earthly or a spiritual oneness? Is it a oneness to be manifest in this life and world or only hereafter? Is it a oneness which can exist despite or inspite of divisions, frictions, and refusal …

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz Jun 1955

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz

Bachelor of Divinity

The thesis, however, does not deal with all the conferences which have been lumped together at times under the title of “Bad Boll.” This thesis limits itself to the free theological conferences which were held in Germany by the Missouri Synod primarily with Lutherans not in fellowship with the Missouri Synod, i.e., the Landeskirchen, the regional churches.

An Anaylsis And Comparison Of Eschatological Elements In The Hymns And Sermons Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James R. Luecke Jun 1955

An Anaylsis And Comparison Of Eschatological Elements In The Hymns And Sermons Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James R. Luecke

Bachelor of Divinity

It is in the wake of the proceedings of the Evanston Assembly of the World Council of Churches, and the re-examination of the Christian Hope in nearly every denomination of Christendom that this paper has been prepared. If it can truly be said that the actual living doctrine of a church is not properly that contained in its books only, but rather also that proclaimed from its pulpits and in the worship of its people, then this paper has value. It is the writer's belief that this study will suggest more nearly than any other study to date the actual …

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights In The Light Of Lutheran Theology, Theodore Ernst Jun 1954

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights In The Light Of Lutheran Theology, Theodore Ernst

Bachelor of Divinity

Emphasis upon human rights in the Charter of the United Nations is not a vague, gossamer thread ephemerally appearing, disappearing, and reappearing. It rather constitutes one of the chief cornerstones upon which the Charter stands.

The Chrisitian Attitude Toward Birth Control, Don C. Preisinger Jun 1953

The Chrisitian Attitude Toward Birth Control, Don C. Preisinger

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis grew out of a paper presented to the Northern Alberta Pastors’ Conference or the Alberta-British Columbia District of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. The discussion showed that many of the pastors were poorly informed on the matter, and not a few based their views mainly upon tradition rather than on the clear Word of God. The writer of this paper thought, therefore, that a thesis on “The Christian Attitude Toward Birth Control" might fill a need and serve some purpose. This monograph presents only a bird's eye view, and in no way does the writer consider it …

The Roman Catholic And Lutheran Doctrine Of Sin, Alfred Frank Volmer Jun 1950

The Roman Catholic And Lutheran Doctrine Of Sin, Alfred Frank Volmer

Bachelor of Divinity

However, while there are apparent similarities, it must be pointed out that the actual similarity or dissimilarity of churches does not consist in their external rites and ceremonies but in their teachings. Therefore, in order to get an accurate picture, it is necessary that we examine the doctrine of each church. However, since we cannot treat all the doctrines we shall take a basic one, namely, the doctrine of sin. The writer will attempt to set forth the official teachings of both churches on this one doctrine.

Rome's Doctrine Of Justification, A J. Schauer May 1948

Rome's Doctrine Of Justification, A J. Schauer

Bachelor of Divinity

This brings us to the queston: Is the Roman Catholic or The Lutheran teaching the true Biblical doctrine of justification as it was once proclaimed by Jesus and His apostles? Or have both church bodies veered from divine truth? To answer these questions objectively is the main purpose of this thesis.

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding May 1947

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding

Bachelor of Divinity

Opposed to the sola fide is the doctrine of ex opere operato, i.e., that the sacraments mechanically confer grace upon all who receive them. Faith is not necessary to receive this grace, but the mere outward ceremony effects it mechanically for all those who do not place an obstacle in the way.

Sacramentalism In The Roman Catholic Church, Jack H. Ruff May 1947

Sacramentalism In The Roman Catholic Church, Jack H. Ruff

Bachelor of Divinity

In view of the current wave of Romanist propaganda, the purpose of this paper is to re-examine the sacramental system of Rome in the light of the Scriptures and history. Objective examination will show that: a) The sacraments have become the shackl.es to bind men to the Church of Rome, b) The sacramentalism or the Romanists leads to doubt or carnal security, c) The papists' system is inadequate as shown by the very practice of the Catholic Church.

Justification In Article Iii Of The Formula Of Concord, John Meyer May 1944

Justification In Article Iii Of The Formula Of Concord, John Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

The doctrine of justification is the article by which the Church stands or falls. It is, therefore, almost impossible to overstress its importance or to understress the danger of error in this most fundamental of all teachings. And so studying an error in the doctrine of justification is profitable for understanding and appreciating the true doctrine of Scripture in other points as well.

Biblical Angelology And Resultant Problems, Robert Kamphoefner Sep 1939

Biblical Angelology And Resultant Problems, Robert Kamphoefner

Bachelor of Divinity

The Scriptural doctrine of the angels has caused much discussion in the theological world throughout the centuries. It occupied the minds and the efforts of the early Fathers of the Church and has continued to be a point of dogmatical discussion even today.

The Reformed Arguments Against The Real Presence Of The Body And Blood Of Christ In The Lord's Supper Examined In The Light Of The Main Modern Philosophical System Since Locke, Walter C. Daib May 1927

The Reformed Arguments Against The Real Presence Of The Body And Blood Of Christ In The Lord's Supper Examined In The Light Of The Main Modern Philosophical System Since Locke, Walter C. Daib

Bachelor of Divinity

It the same line of reasoning were followed out to its bitter consequence, it would leave us without any supernatural facts in religion. But it is by a “happy” inconsistency that the Reformed theologians, at least those of the conservative school, have restricted reason as a norm of doctrine to the narrow sphere or Christology and the Sacraments. It is chiefly here that they have made use of the arguments from possibility and reasonability. It is these arguments from reason that we wish to examine.

Ecclesiastical Union Verses Christian Unity, Eric C. Malte Apr 1927

Ecclesiastical Union Verses Christian Unity, Eric C. Malte

Bachelor of Divinity

Is it true that the union which is advocated by this coming conference is based on God's ideal? Placing the basis of the proposed union along side of the basis laid down in the Bible, we find that the former is based on man's conception and is in direct conflict with many clear passages of Scripture. Nothing is more emphatically taught and stressed in the Bible then that church-fellowship must always, and in all places, be preceded by unity in the spirit, unity in doctrine. We learn this from such passages as Rom.16,17; Eph. 4,3-6 , 13, and many similar …
