The Practical Orthodoxy Of Balthasar Meisner: The Content And Context Of His Theology, David R. Preus Mar 2018

The Practical Orthodoxy Of Balthasar Meisner: The Content And Context Of His Theology, David R. Preus

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Preus, David R. “Balthasar Meisner’s Practical Orthodoxy: The Content and Context of his Theology.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2018. 397 pp.

Throughout his tenure at Wittenberg from 1611 to 1626 Balthasar Meisner (1587-1626) contended with defining “theology” in terms of a genuinely practical enterprise. His challenge was to preserve Luther’s evangelical theology, along with its metaphysical and ethical implications, in the crucible of current political realities and shifting intellectual trends. Though drawn from Scripture, Luther’s theology had certain metaphysical and ethical dimensions that simply could not be ignored by the first two generations after his death. In the interest of …

“These Are Written”: Toward A Cruciform Theology Of Scripture By Peter H. Nafzger, Greg Michael Sep 2015

“These Are Written”: Toward A Cruciform Theology Of Scripture By Peter H. Nafzger, Greg Michael

Concordia Journal

Nafzger encourages the church to recognize the limitations of the doctrine of inspiration as the central guide to understanding Scriptures and to move towards an understanding of Scriptures that focuses on a Trinitarian economy of salvation and centers in the Christ event.

Avery Dulles's Advocacy Of Reformulation Of Dogma And Doctrinal Development, Richard Warneck May 2000

Avery Dulles's Advocacy Of Reformulation Of Dogma And Doctrinal Development, Richard Warneck

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

The first chapter of this study examines the setting for Father Dulles's energetic work in the years immediately following Vatican Council II. With respect to the Church’s dogmatic formulations, it was apparent to Father Dulles that the Council tacitly proclaimed the end of irreformability. The Church's doctrinal statements must undergo reformulation in order to express adequately and communicate incisively the Christian faith to the world of the late twentieth century. Furthermore, his own epistemology, methodology, and theology did, in effect, shape his outlook regarding reformulation. These subjects are treated at length in chapter two, complemented by close attention to his …

Sanctification As Confessed By Luther In His Catechisms, Ernest Bernet Jun 1994

Sanctification As Confessed By Luther In His Catechisms, Ernest Bernet

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem with the doctrine of sanctification is multifaceted. However, Senkbeil, in the above material, has identified for us two main facets in the problem: 1) speaking of justification without properly addressing sanctification, and 2) speaking of sanctification without properly addressing justification. The respective results of these problems are: 1) the whole matter seems to be God’s doing, or 2) the whole matter seems to be our doing.

In order to sift through these issues in sanctification which Senkbeil identifies, I propose for this study that we begin with a semantic method rather than speaking immediately in the traditional doctrinal …

Cyril As Pastor: The Proclamation Of His Christology To His People, Theodore Mayes May 1987

Cyril As Pastor: The Proclamation Of His Christology To His People, Theodore Mayes

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper is to investigate Cyril's Christology as he wrote or preached it to the people in his own diocese, for the particular purpose of discovering whether Cyril, in speaking to his own people, was "Chalcedonian" or "Monophysite." Cyril's anthropology (even though it would be helpful in a definitive study of Cyril's Christology) is not covered, nor are Cyril's major dogmatic and polemic works used.

Justification And Anthropology, Wenzel Lohff Jan 1973

Justification And Anthropology, Wenzel Lohff

Concordia Theological Monthly

The author suggests that contemporary difficulties with respect to understanding the article of justification arise in large measure from the fact that justification has been separated from its anthropological rootage. At the same time, Dr. Lohff argues that the doctrine of justification offers great help to modern man, who often feels trapped in his very humanness. Furthermore, justification, when proclaimed properly, makes Christian unity possible. He describes justification briefly as the right and unequivocal determination of a human practice: to always live anew the life of faith in the Gospel.

Lutheran Conditions For Communion In Holy Things, Robert W. Jenson Nov 1972

Lutheran Conditions For Communion In Holy Things, Robert W. Jenson

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our question is: What conditions would have to be satisfied for Lutheran denominations to officially begin "the communion of holy things" with those with whom Lutherans do not now have such communion, in this instance, the American Episcopalians?

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann Jan 1967

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This holds with special force for a confessional-conservative church which is, with good reason, appreciative of and jealous for its heritage; and such The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is, thank God. The question "have we changed?" is charged with emotion, and at least one component of that emotion is one that must be honored and taken seriously: the clement of holy fear lest that one talent which is death to hide be lodged with us useless.

The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth May 1966

The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to investigate the new quest of the historical Jesus as it has been carried out by four pupils of Rudolf Bultmann. These four pupils are: Ernst Kasemann, Gunther Bornkamm, Gerhard Ebeling, and Ernst Fuchs. They are part of a group of former Bultmann pupils who have called themselves the "Alte Marburger," or "old Marburgers," from the fact that they all studied together under Bultmann at the University of Marburg.

The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg Nov 1965

The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is written by one who is a member of the Church catholic, by one who is a Lutheran, and by one who does not necessarily make statement of dogmatic truth the exclusive property of men within the Lutheran tradition. This is said to disparage the Lutheran heritage not at all, but to indicate that one can at least be open to different systematic formulations. The point is also made to indicate to the reader that the student was conscious of his own heritage, but that at the same time both during the research and during the writing of …

The Eastern Orthodox Doctrine Of Grace With A Lutheran Perspective, James Childs Nov 1964

The Eastern Orthodox Doctrine Of Grace With A Lutheran Perspective, James Childs

Master of Divinity Thesis

The intention of this study is twofold: In the first place, we are attempting to isolate the meaning of "grace” in the Eastern Orthodox Church - if indeed it can be stated in comprehensive form. In the second place, we are attempting to view the Eastern doctrine of grace in a Lutheran perspective. The primary purpose rests in the first phase, the investigation of the Eastern teaching of grace. This purpose is probably best-defined in terms of the writer’s personal enlightenment on the subject rather than in terms of a contribution of new findings. The subsidiary purpose, then, is in …

Current Roman Catholic Thought On Prophetic Interpretation, Walter E. Rast Oct 1964

Current Roman Catholic Thought On Prophetic Interpretation, Walter E. Rast

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is common knowledge by now that Roman Catholicism today is in the midst of a widespread movement of renewed interest in the Bible. One could cite as an illustration the discussions on the schema dealing with the church at the recent session of the Vatican Council in which New Testament ideas of the church played a noticeable role. Though for non-Roman Catholics the schema on the church may still leave something to be desired, the attention given to Biblical material indicates an important development.

Fathers, Brethren, And Distant Relatives: The Family Of Theological Discourse, Jaroslav Pelikan Dec 1962

Fathers, Brethren, And Distant Relatives: The Family Of Theological Discourse, Jaroslav Pelikan

Concordia Theological Monthly

For the theologian, one Book is enough, and a thousand books are not too many. This paradox interprets the meaning and prescribes the role of the theological library. For the task of the theologian, of every theologian, is the exposition of the Sacred Scriptures. Yet to perform his task of expounding that one Book the theologian needs a great many books.

Der Biblische Begriff Gottesfurcht, Martin T. Steege May 1930

Der Biblische Begriff Gottesfurcht, Martin T. Steege

Bachelor of Divinity

The biblical concept of the fear of God is impossible to describe in this treatise. Because there are about two hundred places where the Scriptures speak of the fear of God. We must focus on some of the most important passages. Our task is to interpret important proverbs in order to derive the basic idea of the fear of God. First of all, therefore, it must be determined what this term means and contains and then, as it is in the Christian Ethics comes to the fore. The first part is dogmatic, the second ethical. Therefore, our disposition also breaks …
