Church Growthcoming Of Age, Elmer Towns
Church Growthcoming Of Age, Elmer Towns
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
The Church Growth movement is relatively young in recognition and development. Even though there have been growing churches since Pentecost, Church Growth is a relatively young area of study. As a discipline, it has come a long way since its birth, and must move through adolescence to adulthood. I think we in the North American Society of Church Growth have a better understanding of the nature and purpose of Church Growth than anyone outside our discipline. Some outside our movement, or perhaps many, do not know who we are or what we do. There is still ignorance about Church Growth.
The Church Growth Contributions Of J. Waskom Pickett, David L. Cook
The Church Growth Contributions Of J. Waskom Pickett, David L. Cook
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
McGavran rightly credits Church Growth's modern origins to the mind and contributions of J. Waskom Pickett. The fact the Church Growth movement has now eclipsed Pickett's name raises some important questions: Who was Pickett? How did he come to do Church Growth research even before McGavran? And what are some of his contributions and insights?
Ethnic Church Planting, Daniel Sanchez
Ethnic Church Planting, Daniel Sanchez
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Undoubtedly one of the first questions which comes to mind when we think about this subject is, "Why do we need to plant ethnic churches?" Several answers can be given. Permit me to mention three reasons: (1) a clear biblical mandate; (2) an urgent demographic necessity; and (3) an encouraging pattern of receptivity.
Christian Leadership Attributes Dynamic Increase In Effectiveness To The Work Of Intercessors, Nancy Plaff
Christian Leadership Attributes Dynamic Increase In Effectiveness To The Work Of Intercessors, Nancy Plaff
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
In a recent survey of 130 pastors, evangelists and missionaries, it was revealed that prayer made a dynamic difference--89% indicating a positive change in ministry effectiveness when a trained intercessor prayed for them only fifteen minutes a day tor an entire year.
Towards A Church Growth Agenda For The 1990'S, Eddie Gibbs
Towards A Church Growth Agenda For The 1990'S, Eddie Gibbs
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
The Church Growth Movement in North America is now fifteen Years old and these two days represent the occasion of the fourth annual meeting of the North American Society for Church Growth. As we review the past we can celebrate a great deal of significant achievement in applying Church Growth insights to mobilizing the membership in a giftbased ministry, leadership management, and a new church planting. It occurs to me that, having covered a range of basic issues, and since we are now beginning to see the proliferation of individual concerns according to our various areas of interest, that there …

The Crucial Disanalogies Between Properly Basic Belief And Belief In God, Richard Grigg
The Crucial Disanalogies Between Properly Basic Belief And Belief In God, Richard Grigg
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The antifoundationalist defence of belief in God set forth by Alvin Plantinga has been widely discussed in recent years. Classical foundationalism assumes that there are two kinds of beliefs that we are justified in holding: beliefs supported by evidence, and basic beliefs. Our basic beliefs are those bedrock beliefs that need no evidence to support them and upon which our other beliefs must rest. For the foundationalist, the only beliefs that can be properly basic are either self-evident, or incorrigible, or evident to the senses. Belief in God is none of these. Thus, says the foundationalist, belief in God is …

The Theological And Political Evolution Of Henry Ward Beecher, Tim Hutchinson
The Theological And Political Evolution Of Henry Ward Beecher, Tim Hutchinson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Henry Ward Beecher [1813-1887] "was the most influential minister in America and one of the leading molders of public .opinion of his day." A romantic, a progressive, an idealist, "Beecher was as much the embodiment of nineteenth century America as Walt Whitman..." He was one of the great orators of his time or any time. With his background firmly rooted in American Puritanism, it is ironic that he would be praised as a leader of liberal thought in America. Years after Beecher's death, Harry Emerson Fosdick would comment that whenever we preach freely to sympathetic audiences the social gospel..., we …
The Practice Of Attention, Philip Novak
The Practice Of Attention, Philip Novak
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
"Practices that strengthen the capacity for concentration or attention play a role in most great religious traditions. The importance of developing attention is most readily seen in the great traditions that arose in India, namely Hinduism and Buddhism." ~ from the article
Mystical Experiences And The Search For Human Spiritual Connection, Philip Novak
Mystical Experiences And The Search For Human Spiritual Connection, Philip Novak
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
"...Mystical experiences can come and go, it seems, without altering the fundamental habit patterns and tendencies that vector our behavior. It is precisely this that separates mystical experience from the wider, deeper process of enlightenment. Enlightenment necessarily involves a lasting transformation of character (character is my shorthand for deep structural determinants of consciousness), while mystical experience does not. Enlightenment is an irreducibly moral notion and is, existentially speaking, inversely proportional to stinkerism. At least this is so for Buddhism, the tradition to which we owe, more than to any other, the very notion of enlightenment, and the tradition on …

Book Review: "Radical Christianity: A Reading Of Recovery" By Christopher Rowland, Vincent L. Wimbush
Book Review: "Radical Christianity: A Reading Of Recovery" By Christopher Rowland, Vincent L. Wimbush
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Christopher Rowland, Lecturer in Divinity, Dean and Fellow of Jesus College, University of Cambridge, has written a fascinating and provocative book. Although drawing upon years of research on Christian origins, especially on apocalypticism in Judaism and early Christianity, this book goes far beyond antiquarian exegetical interests and questions. It is a most interesting attempt to determine the origins, then chart and account for major developments in the course of one type of Christian ethic and orientation-a type of "radical Christianity" rooted in apocalypticism.

The Doctrine Of Baptism As Confessed By C. F. W. Walther's Gesangbuch Of 1847, Jon Vieker
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the vitality with which the Doctrine of Baptism was confessed in the hymnody of those who emigrated from Saxony to Perry County, Missouri and later formed "The German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio and Other States."® Their first Gesanabuch of 1847,edited by C. F. W. Walther, the Missouri Synod's first President and stellar leader in nineteenth century American Lutheranism, will serve as the principal source.

Knowing God In William Blake: A Study To Find Meaning In His Work Through Plato, Swedenborg, And Mystical Tradition, David B. Gabel
Knowing God In William Blake: A Study To Find Meaning In His Work Through Plato, Swedenborg, And Mystical Tradition, David B. Gabel
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This project takes a look into the philosophical and theological sources found in the work of William Blake as they culminate in his epic poem Jerusalem. This study includes an examination of the philosophies of Plato and Emanuel Swedenborg, the mystical pathway, the Jewish mystical tradition known as Kabbalah, and finally an examination of the works of Blake himself. We work from a three-fold premise: 1) that mystical experience occurs, 2) that archetypes exist in the collective unconscious, and 3) that these archetypes can be known through intuition and mystical experience. The focus is on those elements which are characteristic …
