The Metaphysical & Epistemological Theories Of C.S. Lewis, Richard Ryals Nov 1984

The Metaphysical & Epistemological Theories Of C.S. Lewis, Richard Ryals

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

C. S. Lewis is very concerned about the naturalist assumptions which underlie much of modern knowledge. He attempts to show that the naturalist philosophy, when taken to its logical conclusion, undermines the validity of our reasoning processes and our moral judgments. He then attempts to offer an alternative philosophy which can serve as an adequate basis for our reasoning and ethics.

Lewis sees three basic metaphysical possibilities: naturalism, dualism, and theism. Naturalism views the natural process as the ultimate reality. Everything that exists is either a part of or a product of this process. Dualism asserts that there are two …

The Bible And Magister Gratian’S Canon Law, John E. Rybolt May 1984

The Bible And Magister Gratian’S Canon Law, John E. Rybolt

John E Rybolt

The main work of canon law in the medieval period, the Decretum Gratiani, used the Bible at the heart of his legal sources. This paper surveys his methodology in the use of biblical texts. He used these texts in a direct and accessible manner, free of contrived accommodations. The result is a work of practical and pastoral exegesis.

Melanchthon's Understanding Of The Will In The Loci Communes, Richard Osslund May 1984

Melanchthon's Understanding Of The Will In The Loci Communes, Richard Osslund

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is a commonplace among many Lutheran theologians that Philip Melanchthon was a synergist. The purpose of this study is to evaluate this theological judgment on the basis of Melanchthon’s Loci of 1521, 1535, 1543, 1555, and 1559. The conclusion of this study is that Melanchthon's writings do not support the charge of synergism which has been directed against him. It is not the intention of the author to ascribe malevolence or lack of scholarly integrity to those who have described Melanchthon's position as synergistic. There are reasons for the historical judgment that Melanchthon was "the father of synergism in …

The Priesthood Of All Believers And The Theology Of Pietism, Breno Faber May 1984

The Priesthood Of All Believers And The Theology Of Pietism, Breno Faber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Pietism and pietistic emphases are becoming popular again because during the seventeenth and early eighteenth century the Pietists sought to revitalize Christianity in ways familiar to twentieth century Christians seeking to do the same. Pietism sought to foster a more vigorous personal and public piety among the people. They sought to improve the education of ministers in practical piety so that they might better guide and edify their people. They sought to encourage the reading of the Bible, Christian education of the youthful and the mature, demonstrated social concern and resposibility in their philanthropic enterprises, and embarked upon ambitious programs …

Search For Nothing: The Life Of St. John Of The Cross By Richard P. Hardy, Philip Novak Apr 1984

Search For Nothing: The Life Of St. John Of The Cross By Richard P. Hardy, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

"A new biography of such a seminal figure could hardly be anything but welcome. Yet I can only recommend Hardy's book with reservations. Though written lovingly by a professor of spirituality who seems to share John of the Cross' contemplative sensibilities, and who, moreover, has done his homework, the book remains curiously one-dimensional. In a word it lacks, depth." ~ from the article

Esse/Essence And Grace: A Theological Inquiry Into Thomist Methodology, Joyce A. Little Apr 1984

Esse/Essence And Grace: A Theological Inquiry Into Thomist Methodology, Joyce A. Little

Dissertations (1934 -)

Traditional Thomism, both philosophical and theological, has assumed that the esse/essence distinction drawn by St Thomas Aquinas lies within the domain of philosophy (nature) rather than of theology (grace). The source of this assumption is Thomas himself, who supposed the substantial correlation of esse and essence to be natural, thereby relegating grace to the role of accident. This dissertation challenges that fundamental assumption. The dissertation consists of two parts. In Part I, the esse/essence distinction itself is analyzed. The approach is methodological, not historical. Arguing that the basic methodological principle of Thornism is the act/potency complementarity which Thomas derived from …
