The following photographic essay presents a series of rare vistas from Jerusalem and Palestine photographed about a century ago. More changes have occurred in the Holy Land in the last one hundred years than in the previous two thousand. Pictures such as these take the viewer back into the premodern era of the land of Israel. Their unpaved streets and simple landscapes are the same that greeted President George A. Mark 8:22-26 records Jesus' healing of a blind man at Bethsaida. When the villagers brought the man to Jesus, Jesus took him outside the town, spit on the man's eyes, laid his hands on him, and asked him if he could see anything. The man answered, "I see men as trees, walking." Jesus then put his hands on the man's eyes again and made him look up, and with that the man could see clearly and normally. Clyn D. Barrus was chair of the Department of Music at Brigham Young University from 1993 until 1996, when he became director of BYU's newly organized School of Music. This article combines two talks—one to his department on November 5, 1991, and the other to the Church Music Workshop on August 2, 1994. Professor Barrus died on February 27, 1998.
