This study was not designed for publication. The staff of CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY requested the author to prepare it as the basis for a discussion out of which an in-house position paper might come. After receiving and discussing the draft, the staff adopted it as its own with minor modifications and secured the author's permission to publish it.

From Tokyo To Oslo, Won Yong Ji

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran World Federation's Commission on Church Cooperation sponsored an international consultation in Tokyo with some 150 people, from April 29 to May 4, 1971, under the theme "The Role of Lutheranism in an Ecumenical Age." It was the first sizeable gathering of such a nature since the recent restructuring of the Lutheran World Federation at its Evian Assembly in 1970. That it was held in Asia was also noteworthy.

From June 6 to 12, 1971, the LWF Executive meeting occurred in Oslo. It was also the first enlarged meeting (more than 100 participants) of the top governing body of …

Is God Trying To Tell Us Something?, Wayne Saffen

Concordia Theological Monthly

As the 1970s began, the western region of the National Campus Ministry Association held a convocation at the University of California's Santa Cruz campus to consider "Life Planning." The present article is a revision of this author's discussion paper for that conference. Its theme really deals with the crisis in ministry as such. As usual, campus ministry turns out to be one of the sensitive outposts catching some of the first signals of changes coming to affect church and ministry in the world. It is shared here with a wider readership in a firm commitment to and belief in confraternity …

The Service Conducted Facing The People, Charles Mcclean Dec 1971

The Service Conducted Facing The People, Charles Mcclean

Concordia Theological Monthly

The practice of ceremonial worship is closely related to the heart of the Christian faith. The Scriptures teach and the church confesses that Christ redeemed the whole man. Our bodies, too, share in the redemption accomplished by the Son of God, who Himself took flesh and blood of His virgin mother. Christ chose earthly, tangible elements -water, bread, and wine - to impart to men the salvation He accomplished.

A Review Of "Oral Interpretation Of Biblical Literature" By Chloe Armstrong, Rita Lewis Dec 1971

A Review Of "Oral Interpretation Of Biblical Literature" By Chloe Armstrong, Rita Lewis

Honors Theses

Members of today's society, upon hearing the word Bible, immediately associated it with the Christian religion as its guide book, its creed, and its collection of doctrinal material. The term Bible is synonymous with the Holy Scriptures and the Word of God. In short, people of our culture, whether they themselves are Christians, view the Bible as a symbol of Christianity and its sole source of religious dogma.

However, besides its religious worth, the Bible also is universally considered an unrivaled compilation of timeless literature. Many scholars have attested to this fact, including Frederic Kenyon, who stated, "Apart from …
