Christ Frees And Unites: The Third Lutheran World Federation Assembly, Hanns Lilje

Concordia Theological Monthly

The third assembly of the Lutheran World Federation, held in Minneapolis, August 15-25, 1957, sends Christian greetings to all Lutheran congregations in the world. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and joy. We are grateful to God for the rich blessings which He granted us throughout these days. It is with joy and affection that we think of the fellowship with so many brethren and sisters from all over the world.

A Critique Of Aulen's Christus Victor, George O. Evenson Oct 1957

A Critique Of Aulen's Christus Victor, George O. Evenson

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the most significant theological books published in recent decades is Christus Victor by Gustaf Aulen. In it he suggests that there are three main ideas or theories of the atonement: the classic, the Latin, and the subjective-humanistic. That which makes the book both significant and controversial is the author's contention that the authentic Scriptural doctrine of the atonement is the classic idea, that Luther was an exponent of the classic idea and that therefore the orthodox Lutheran doctrine of the atonement differs markedly both from Scripture and from Luther. Aulen asserts that “the doctrine of Lutheranism became a …

Robert Barnes And Wittenberg, N. S. Tjernagel Sep 1957

Robert Barnes And Wittenberg, N. S. Tjernagel

Concordia Theological Monthly

From the year 1521, when Henry VIII attacked the theology of Martin Luther in his celebrated Assertio septem sacramentorum, to 1540, when he reiterated his theological Romanism by ordering the execution of Thomas Cromwell and Dr. Robert Barnes, English policy respecting Lutheranism went full cycle. Between those dates on which the conservative position of Henry VIII was so emphatically stated, the king of England departed from orthodoxy and came very near to espousing the theology of the Lutheran reformers of Wittenberg, Germany. The royal dalliance with heresy during those years was not unconnected with the king's success in securing his …

Social And Political Thinking In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod From 1920-1955, Arthur Simon Jun 1957

Social And Political Thinking In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod From 1920-1955, Arthur Simon

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The primary aim of this thesis is to give a description of the social and political thinking within The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod during the years 1920 to 1955. Obviously the purpose is more than that, however, since few people are interested in describing simply for description's sake. The implication is that such a description has to do with a crucial area in the theology and life of the Church. This in turn implies that even a description can serve the useful purpose of giving a better understanding of what has been thought and why it has been thought,. and can:, …

Lwf Study Document, Paul M. Bretscher Jun 1957

Lwf Study Document, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

The present Study Document, which will be submitted to the delegates attending the Assembly of the LWF at Minneapolis next August, is in form and content a decided improvement over the document which appeared a year ago. A careful comparison of both compels the conclusion that the Commission on Theology was truly concerned to prepare a statement which would be solidly Scriptural and soundly confessional. For these efforts the Commission deserves the unqualified thanks of all who love the Lutheran Zion. The following observations are therefore intended only to point up some issues in the present document which, in our …

Not Discerning The Body In 1 Corinthians 11:29 In The Light Of Pauline Eucharistic Theology Of 1 Corinthians, Ralph C. Kruger Jun 1957

Not Discerning The Body In 1 Corinthians 11:29 In The Light Of Pauline Eucharistic Theology Of 1 Corinthians, Ralph C. Kruger

Bachelor of Divinity

Theological trends determine the specific emphases of the confessional doctrines of the Church. As throughout the history of the Church when new trends and theological postulates appear, the student of theology is called upon to examine carefully their content on the basis of Scripture in order to reject or absorb these propositions into his own theology. Twentieth century theology, captivated by the ecumenical movement, is engaged in renewed study of the particu1ar doctrines of the Church and Sacraments. The purpose of this thesis is to present for the reader's evaluation a brief study of a phrase from 1 Cor. 11:29 …

An Evaluation Of The Arguments For And Against Tax Exemption For No-Profit Private Schools In California, Robert K. Menzel

Bachelor of Divinity

The development of the thesis will focus on the years 1951 to 1956. The first marks the passage in the California Legislature of the measure exempting from taxation non-profit private schools of less than collegiate grade. In December, 1966, a decision of the United States Federal Supreme Court declared that the California statute presented no substantial federal question. This action. In effect, quashed efforts of opponents of tax-exemption to foil the will of the majority of voters in the state.

An Evaluation Of Current Proposals For Religion In Public Schools-Practical, Edgar Trinklein

Bachelor of Divinity

Within the past decade there has been an increasing concern among educators and religious leaders over the problem of religion in the public school curriculum. It is the purpose of this study to examine some of the proposals currently made by influential groups and individuals to introduce religion into the curriculum of the public schools. The proposals will be evaluated in the light of published statements of the Lutheran Church --Missouri Synod.

The Theological Significance Of Johann Albrecht Bengel, Robert Spieler May 1957

The Theological Significance Of Johann Albrecht Bengel, Robert Spieler

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The position of Johann Albrecht Bengel in the history of Lutheran theology has never been defined in a detailed way for the English-speaking Church. One reason for this is the paucity of available primary sources necessary for such a project.

Labor, Industry, And The Church, David S. Schuller Apr 1957

Labor, Industry, And The Church, David S. Schuller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The church stood amazed before the rising form of the industrial giant. Its size was frightening enough, but its two heads of unionism and management struck terror into her heart. The church felt she should say something to the monster. But then what could she say? It certainly didn't look like a membership prospect. And so the church pretended she didn't see it. But the church's heart continued to pound. And way down deep she felt guilty. She had a message - even for such two-headed giants. And she should be speaking.

Contemporary Church Architecture In The Lutheran Church Of America, Arlis J. Ehlen Mar 1957

Contemporary Church Architecture In The Lutheran Church Of America, Arlis J. Ehlen

Concordia Theological Monthly

A great many of the churches built for Lutheran congregations in recent years show the strong influence of contemporary developments in architecture. These buildings usually depart so noticeably from the traditional ecclesiastical styles that certain questions quite naturally come to the mind of the interested observer: I. What originally led these congregations to choose the contemporary idiom for their new churches? II. How, exactly, do the modern churches differ from the older ones, and in what ways are they still similar? III. How have church members, community, and visitors reacted toward the new churches after they were built and in …

Notes On Translation Of The Malayalam Bible, Herbert M. Zorn Feb 1957

Notes On Translation Of The Malayalam Bible, Herbert M. Zorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

These notes are designed to point out some of the difficulties of the translator's task, especially if he must transfer thought content into a language that is separated from the original in point of form, culture, distance, and time. It is not the writer's intention to present an exhaustive study of the Bible in Malayalam. Nor does he maintain that the problems dealt with are the most urgent and vexing. Peculiarities of Malayalam make it difficult to make clear some of the vexing problems to one not familiar with the language. Enough examples, however, will be cited to remind us …
