The Jesus presented in John’s Gospel is mysterious and enigmatic. Frequently he makes ambiguous statements which are misunderstood, only becoming clear after certain incidents have occurred. The mysterious Jesus of this Gospel points consistently to a God who knows the future and foreshadows it in language which is enigmatic at the time of utterance, but becomes transparent once future events have come to pass. These statements act not as predictors of the future, but as reassurance for His followers that He can be trusted with the future.

Jesus’ resurrection to bodily life after death by crucifixion is foundational to orthodox Christianity. The disciples had encounters with Jesus after his crucifixion which caused them to believe he had been bodily resurrected to life again. Psychiatric hypotheses have been proposed as naturalistic explanations for his disciples’ beliefs, which include hallucinations, conversion disorder, and bereavement experiences. Since they propose hallucinatory symptoms that suggest the presence of underlying medical pathology, clinical appraisal of these hypotheses for the disciples’ encounters with the resurrected Jesus is warranted. Psychiatric hypotheses for the disciples’ belief in Jesus’ resurrection are found to be inconsistent with current …

What does Paul envision as the basis for the spiritual (trans)formation of the believer? Several key passages in the Pauline epistles reveal that Paul envisions a vibrant connection between the resurrection of Jesus and the expected character qualities and behaviors of those who are in Christ. In examining this connection between resurrection and Christian maturation, three distinct, though interrelated, emphases may be identified: 1) identification with Jesus in his resurrection, 2) submission to the lordship of Jesus and the expectations of his kingdom, and 3) hope in the future resurrection of those who are “in Christ.” While these form the …

Recent scholarship on the Fourth Gospel has suggested that this document was produced by a Christian community which was involved in an intense conflict with a local synagogue, the focus of which was christology. This study attempts to relate the Johannine prologue to this context, using Berger and Luckmann's model of legitimation . John's christological portrait of Jesus in the prologue is best understood in terms of the author's use of traditions and imagery which were authoritative to both him and his opponents, in order to defend the legitimacy of his and his community's beliefs. The Gospel preserves the preaching of Jesus as well as his early Jewish followers who penned these works, during the decades before and after the destruction of the Second Temple in the Christian first century. They offer a witness to homiletic midrash as distinct from the exegetical midrash. The latter governs the different approaches to the Biblical text and its wording. This paper was presented at the 15th World Congress of Jewish Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem in August 2009.
