The Mormon Influence At Disney, J. Michael Hunter

J Michael Hunter

“The Mormon Influence at Disney,” provides a history of Mormons—members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church)— involved with the Walt Disney Company, including animators, composers, and administrators. Beginning with cartoonist Floyd Gottfredson’s influence on the development of Mickey Mouse, the history continues with the influence of animators like Eric Larson, Les Clark, Judge Whitaker, Scott Whitaker, Don Bluth, and Richard Rich. Beginning as an animator on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Larson went on to become a member of the Disney Studio’s powerful board known as “the nine old men.” Mormon composers covered …

Foiling The Black Knight, Kelly C. Smith Dec 2014

Foiling The Black Knight, Kelly C. Smith

Kelly C Smith

Why is the academy in general, and philosophy in particular, not more involved in the fight against the creationist threat? And why, when a response is offered, is it so curiously ineffective? I argue, by using an analogy with the battle against the Black Knight from the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, that the difficulty lies largely in a failure to see the nature of the problem clearly. By modifying the analogy, it is possible to see both why large sections of the academy have remained unmoved and also why many of the reactions to the threat have …

Can Intelligent Design Become Respectable, Kelly Smith

Kelly C Smith

What I want to try to do is give you a basic blueprint for respectability. If we make the assumption (and there are lots of people who would question this assumption, but I will make it for the purposes of this talk) that ID theory seriously wishes to become a respectable scientific theory, then I will tell you how to do it. If you follow my 4 simple steps to scientific respectability, you will get what you want: scientific respect, research funds, access to science classrooms, and so on, and so forth. It is actually fairly simple — all you …

Order In The House? The Reception Of Luther's Orders Teaching In Early Lutheran Genesis Commentaries, Mickey Mattox

Mickey L Mattox

The notion that human life at Creation had been set into a series of ordered relationships was central for the Lutheran reformers’ understanding of Church, home, and state. Expositors developed this imaginative theological construct primarily out of the narrative of the Creation and Fall, and they used it as a framework for understanding the obligations of humankind in relation to the Creator, as well as for homes and societies rightly ordered. The Christian home, however, did double duty, serving as an archetype not only of life rightly ordered (law) but also of the love and freedom given by Christ in union …

Is Public Reason Counterproductive?, Eduardo Peñalver Nov 2014

Is Public Reason Counterproductive?, Eduardo Peñalver

Eduardo M. Peñalver

The debate over the proper role of religion in public life has raged on for decades and shows little signs of slowing down. Proponents of restrictive accounts of public reason have proceeded under the assumption that religious and deep moral disagreement constitutes a threat to social stability that must be tamed. In contrast to this "scary story" linking pluralism with the threat of instability, there exists within political theory a competing, "happy story" according to which pluralism affirmatively contributes to stability by creating incentives for groups to moderate their demands. Whether the scary story or happy story is a more …

Making Room: A Place For Children's Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll Oct 2014

Making Room: A Place For Children's Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll

Heather Ingersoll

A relatively uncharted territory until recently, the concept of children as innate spiritual beings has garnered significant attention among scholars over the past two decades. The more that is learned about children’s spirituality the more apparent it becomes that the Christian church in the United States generally fails to provide sufficient space for children to explore, develop, and share their spirituality. This potentially leads children to suppress or disconnect from their spirituality in later years and also deprives a Christian community of the ability to learn and grow from children’s unique experiences of God and spirituality. This paper examines the …

Paul's View Of The Church Ets 2014.Pdf, Leo Raines Percer

Leo Raines Percer

With the rise of the internet and electronic communications, the world has witnessed a rise in so-called “on-line communities.”  These on-line communities represent a loosely connected family of sorts where people interact with each other via electronic resources.  As a result of these things, many Christian communities have attempted to build a “church community” in an on-line environment.  Paul describes the church as a community in most of his letters, and in some letters he even describes the church as a body and a bride.  The language Paul uses is very relational and almost physical.  How would Paul respond to …
