Apollo Hypoakraios Reconsidered, Peter Nulton
Apollo Hypoakraios Reconsidered, Peter Nulton
Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.
In 1897, the excavations of P. Kabbadias uncovered ten votive plaques in a cave on the northwest slope of the Athenian Acropolis, thereby fixing the location of the "sanctuary of Apollo in a cave" mentioned by Pausanias (I.28.4). The inscriptions indicated that they were meant as dedications to Apollo Hypoakraios or Hypo Makrais, and that the dedicants were invariably members of the college of archons. Although the corpus has increased steadily since then, the inscriptions have not been treated together since Kabbadias's original publication.
In this paper, I will offer some conclusions drawn from a thorough re-analysis of the corpus. …

Cyberspace: The Final Frontier?, Patrick Flanagan
Cyberspace: The Final Frontier?, Patrick Flanagan
Patrick Flanagan
The science fiction series of the '70's, Star Trek, began all its telecastings with the announcement "Space: The Final Frontier." Star Trek chronicled the voyage of a crew navigating their way through space. For the travelers, space seemed like the last unknown entity that needed to be investigated. As they journeyed, they learned of the boundless nature of space. Each episode portrayed a group of folks encountering new situations, attempting to solve another problem, or strategizing how to overcome an obstacle. While few people will ever have a chance to travel in a spaceship to discover the universe, most have …

In the elections of November 1996 and November 1997, the residents of St. Peter, Minnesota, had the opportunity to consider two political newcomers. These candidates-Ruth Johnson and Dan Stratton-had much in common beyond the fact that neither had run previously for elected office. Both candidates had a strong and long-standing interest in politics and public affairs. Both sought prestige positions-Johnson wanted the vacant state legislative seat, while Stratton challenged for mayor of St. Peter. Both were relatively unknown to the general public. Finally, both candidates had connections to the local liberal arts college; Johnson was an alumnus serving in administration, …

Mary's Magnificat: Sources And Themes, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.
Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.
In the 1961 meeting of this Society, the Basilian biblical scholar, James Terence Forestell, reflected upon the biblical background of the Magnificat. He declared that it is not merely a patchwork quilt of Old Testament texts. "The Magnificat is a new hymn with its own unity of inspiration, but the words do reflect a whole stream of O.T. piety, which is not to be isolated in a few texts." He studied the background possibilities in the Jewish Scriptures for every significant term in the hymn.
I will stand with him against the assessment of the Jesuit Scripture scholar, Joseph A. …
