Hinduism And Holy People, Nancy M. Martin Dec 2004

Hinduism And Holy People, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In Hinduism, there are both a relatively large number and a wide array of types of people considered holy. Such people are deemed to be spiritually advanced, having reached the highest levels of spiritual realization, and to have the power to guide others toward that realization. They are thus treated with respect and reverence. A person can be transformed merely by being in their presence through the experience of darshan (both seeing and being seen by a holy person), even as a person can be transformed by being in the presence of deity. Such holy people may be seen to …

[Introduction To] The Latter-Day Saint Experience In America, Terryl Givens Nov 2004

[Introduction To] The Latter-Day Saint Experience In America, Terryl Givens

Bookshelf

Provides the most comprehensive overview of Mormonism—one of the fast growing religions in the World—available in one volume.

Scholars have labeled the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormonism as it is better known, both the American Religion, and the next world faith. The Mormon saga includes early persecution, conflict, and pioneer resilience, against a backdrop of revolutionary religious, social, and economic practices. The greatest colonizing force in American history, Mormonism has outgrown its 19th-century isolation and theocratic roots to become one of the most prosperous and respected Christian communities in the country. This book examines the history …

The Past From God's Perspective : A Commentary On John's Gospel, Scott Gambrill Sinclair Aug 2004

The Past From God's Perspective : A Commentary On John's Gospel, Scott Gambrill Sinclair

Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions

The Gospel of John presents a special challenge to this series because the gospel claims to give us a trustworthy account of who Jesus was, and yet, critical scholars know that John is not as historically accurate as the other gospels. John’s picture of Jesus—both of what he said and did— differs profoundly from that in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. These other gospels are earlier than John and fit much more closely with conditions in Palestine when Jesus lived. Nevertheless, the Gospel of John explicitly asserts both that its principal author knew Jesus personally and that what he wrote is …

The Glossa Ordinaria On The Song Of Songs, Mary Dove May 2004

The Glossa Ordinaria On The Song Of Songs, Mary Dove

TEAMS Commentary Series

In this translation of glosses on the Song of Songs, Mary Dove offers a readily accessible and inexpensive resource for students and scholars. Anselm of Laon, possibly assisted by his brother Ralph, is credited with compiling the Glossa Ordinaria on the Song of Songs, drawing from earlier commentaries by Origen, Gregory the Great, Bede, Alcuin, Hrabanus Maurus, Haimo of Auxerre, and Robert of Tombelaine as well as contributing his own readings of the text. As Dove notes in her introduction, the text is quite complicated, with each manuscript page divided into three columns - the biblical text in large …
