Word And Sacrament: An Introduction To Luther's Sacramental Theology, Gordon Lincoln Isaac May 1980

Word And Sacrament: An Introduction To Luther's Sacramental Theology, Gordon Lincoln Isaac

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Word and sacrament is central to Luther's theology. No adequate introduction to Luther can pass over this aspect of his thought, In every matter, whether it be the study of Luther's doctrine of justification, of his ethics, or any other fundamental teaching, we are forced to consider this concept.

In modern times, however, sacramental thought on the whole, has not been looked on favorably. Sacramental theology does not lend itself well to the rationality of the twentieth century mind. A mystery which cannot be further explained is an anomaly in a structure where everything has an answer. It is …

The Yahwism Of Moses, Jong Jin Choe May 1980

The Yahwism Of Moses, Jong Jin Choe

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "The theme of the deliverance of Israel from bondage in Egypt not only provides the framework of the opening books of the Old Testament but is also recalled and emphasized in many other passages. Furthermore, one of the most fundamental and frequently repeated statements of faith in the Old Testament is that Yahweh; the God of Israel, is the one who "led Israel out of Egypt." It is noteworthy that in this affirmation God is regularly the grammatical or, at least, the logical subject, and it is equally remarkable that "Israel" as a totality always appears as the object. …

A History Of Baptist Missions In Thailand, Alexander Garnett Smith May 1980

A History Of Baptist Missions In Thailand, Alexander Garnett Smith

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Disregard of history is a folly which cannot be ignored without dire consequences. Rightly or wrongly the old adage suggests "History repeats itself." Ignorance of history then becomes a blight that threatens the foundations of a people, an institution or an organization. The Church and her missions are not exempt, particularly those in the Third World today. In a day when social changes occur rapidly, attacks on the historical ethos mount with threatening crescendo. Where insufficient knowledge of historical foundations exists, chaos and instability in values, morals and attitudes can easily arise within the nation or the Church.

The First Epistle of Peter is a letter of encouragement and exhortation to a suffering people. The purpose of this study is to examine the Apostle's letter and other pertinent materials to discover what it meant in the life situation of those to whom it was sent. Then as a final product of that examination, the eternal truths that transcend all time have been presented in this series of sermons in a style that communicates to the modern Christian.

The Apostle tells us that we can have "Peace in Persecution."

An Apologetic For The Death, Burial, And Bodily Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, Lawrence Garten Carmichael May 1980

An Apologetic For The Death, Burial, And Bodily Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, Lawrence Garten Carmichael

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ has been a tenet of the Christian faith from it's inception. This study will examine the evidence that has been adduced for the resurrection. It is the author's purpose to find out if the resurrection of Jesus Christ can be supported both historically and logically.

Bishop Of Jerusalem -- A Fictionalized Biography Of James, The Author Of The Epistle That Bears His Name, Glen Williamson May 1980

Bishop Of Jerusalem -- A Fictionalized Biography Of James, The Author Of The Epistle That Bears His Name, Glen Williamson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Bishop of Jerusalem, a story of James, the Lord's brother, emerged with a certain awesome sense of finality after long periods of study and contemplation. It is a fictionalized biography of a man whom God used (behind the scenes) to interpret truth and provide guidelines necessary to the establishing of the church of Jesus Christ upon the earth.

Admittedly, the writer began with some preconceived notions regarding the man, but with no mental images so deeply engrained they could not dissolve easily in any new light received along the way.

In this study of James, his character, his appearance, his …

In Search Of A Useful Concept Of Discipleship In The Gospels, Lawson E. Brown Apr 1980

In Search Of A Useful Concept Of Discipleship In The Gospels, Lawson E. Brown

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The greatest imperative left by Christ to His Church is clearly delineated in His last words, as recorded by Matthew:

"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Jesus has clearly declared, then, that every person whom He has called to Himself must accept the mandate to disciple others. …

Wesleyan Primer: A Layman's Guide To Wesleyan Theology, James William Zinn Apr 1980

Wesleyan Primer: A Layman's Guide To Wesleyan Theology, James William Zinn

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

"Theology" is one of those words generally neglected by the Christian layman. Theology seems a distant and nebulous discipline which is restricted solely to the somber halls of the seminary. Even the definition of Theology is somewhat misleading, meaning in a restricted sense "a study of God". In practice, though, theology really means "the study of how God relates to his Creation." Any attempt to study God falls very short of completion. After all, the subject, God himself, is not available for direct examination. Within Christian theology the only concrete evidence available with which to work with is the Holy …

An Exposition Of 1 John With An Emphasis On The Anti-Gnostic Elements, Patricia Swann Mar 1980

An Exposition Of 1 John With An Emphasis On The Anti-Gnostic Elements, Patricia Swann

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

An intensive study of the book of I John can be a rewarding experience, for despite its brevity, it is a book that is rich in practical and devotional thought. It is one of the most personal and intimate of the New Testament writings and has the effect of drawing the reader close to God. It is strongly doctrinal without being dry and it is relevant to the daily life of the Christian believer. For instance it provides answers to such questions as& what is involved in walking in the light? Is it possible to live without sin? Is there …

Axiomatic Church Growth, C. Ray Kaiser Feb 1980

Axiomatic Church Growth, C. Ray Kaiser

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The identification of church growth principles--universal precepts which govern the process of growth--is the central focus of investigation for the church growth discipline. Although volumes on the subject of church growth are relatively numerous, there is, nonetheless, a need for an authoritative presentation of church growth principles accepted by a majority of leaders within the discipline.

The Nature And Attainability Of Biblical Perfection, Paul Bryan Overland Jan 1980

The Nature And Attainability Of Biblical Perfection, Paul Bryan Overland

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The objective of this thesis is to develop a definition of Biblical perfection so as to clarify its nature and attainability in Christian experience. The study is designed with three facets in view: (1) the nature of Biblical perfection, (2) the attainability of Biblical perfection , and (3) a theological synthesis. The first section develops a general understanding of the scope of connotations possible for the related Hebrew and Greek words. The focus in what constitutes the body of the study is on ten key Scripture selections, subjected to close analysis in context. The themes emerging from the first section …
