"There is scarcely any doctrine in the whole compass of 1 revelation, which is of deeper importance than this." Such is John Wesley's comment concerning the providence of God. Wesley, himself, had a keen interest in providence. In his Journals alone he makes no less than forty-eight direct references to providence along with many inferences. These, along with many more references in his other writings, show a lifelong concern with the subject.

The religious history of the Pacific Northwest is important to the development and growth of this part of the United States. The first church men came with the purpose of evangelizing the Indians who lived in the region. These men, such as Jason Lee, Father Blanchet, Father Desmet, Marcus Whitman, and Dr. Elijah White, were the first to migrate to this country with the exception of a small handful who were fur traders or employees of the Hudson Bay Company.
