Russian Orthodoxy And The Challenge Of Modernity: The Case Of Archimandrite Makary, Paul Valliere Mar 2010

Russian Orthodoxy And The Challenge Of Modernity: The Case Of Archimandrite Makary, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

The challenge of modernity for Orthodoxy as experienced by Archimandrite Makary (Mikhail lakovlevich Glukharev) is presented here through a brief exposition of Makary's career, its successes, failures and inner tensions. Particular attention is given to Makary's role in the struggle for a Russian-language Bible.

The Modernity Of Khomiakov, Paul Valliere Mar 2010

The Modernity Of Khomiakov, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

In the case of Khomiakov and the other Russian religious philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, however, identifying the traditional element is a difficult task for a reason which becomes more obvious as one becomes better acquainted with their work: Khomiakov and the other Russian religious philosophers were not traditional thinkers.

Solov'Ëv And Schelling's Philosophy Of Revelation, Paul Valliere Mar 2010

Solov'Ëv And Schelling's Philosophy Of Revelation, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

The connection between Solov'ëv's philosophy of religion and Schelling's has long been recognized but is difficult to clarify for two reasons. The first is Solov'ëv's nonchalance about citing sources. The paucity of direct references to Schelling in the work of a philosopher who has been called 'the last and most outstanding Russian Schellingian' is quite astonishing. The second reason is the ambivalence toward Schelling in Russian religious philosophy.

Russian Orthodoxy And Human Rights, Paul Valliere Mar 2010

Russian Orthodoxy And Human Rights, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

This essay describes the situation and orientation of the Russian Orthodox Church with respect co human tights. Along the broad spectrum of rights I focus mainly on the civil rights of individuals and nonstate associations rather than the subsistence rights and rights to social services that figure so prominently in socialist theories of rights.

Introduction To The Modern Orthodox Tradition, Paul Valliere Mar 2010

Introduction To The Modern Orthodox Tradition, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

In her study of the Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire, Joan Hussey begins with a caveat: "In the present state of our knowledge a book on the Byzantine Church must necessarily be in the nature of an interim report since much pioneer work remains to be done." The same must be said about the attempt to present the "teachings" of modern Orthodoxy concerning law, society, and politics.

"The Lady And The Wench" : A Practical Theodicy In Russian Literature., Paul Valliere Feb 2010

"The Lady And The Wench" : A Practical Theodicy In Russian Literature., Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

In the study of religion, it is important to distinguish broadly between two forms of theodicy: theoretical and practical. Both forms address the fundamental concern of all theodicy, "the justice of God," but they do so in different contexts and for different purposes.

The Spirituality Of War, Paul Valliere Feb 2010

The Spirituality Of War, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

Starting from the assumption that war, whatever else it is, is a matrix of values rooted in some type of spirituality, the article presents a brief typology of spiritualities of war: holy war, heroic war, and political (or "just") war. The article concludes by discussing implications of the typology for current reflection on problems of war and peace in the nuclear age. (A fuller treatment of the typology and its applications may be found in Paul Valliere, Holy War and Pentecostal Peace [New York: The Seabury Press, 1983]).

Vladimir Soloviev (1853-1900): Commentary, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

Orthodox reflection on modern legalism began in Russia, not because the Russians were better prepared to think about law than the other Orthodox peoples, but because Russia was the first Orthodox country to attempt to remake itself into a state and society of the modern type.

Finding God In A Tangled World: Thoughts & Parables, Juris Rubenis, Maris Subacs, Paul Valliere Dec 2006

Finding God In A Tangled World: Thoughts & Parables, Juris Rubenis, Maris Subacs, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

This unusual little book is a translated masterpiece of wisdom - the result of a unique conversation about faith between a Protestant pastor and a Roman Catholic artist in the heart of post-communist Europe. Juris Rubenis and Maris Subacs know very well that their country is inconspicuous on the global scene. But they also know that the spiritual world is one of reverse perspective, where a small people can be gifted with a big faith and a narrow gate can open onto a vast and wonderful domain.
Rubenis' pithy observations about the world are brief and deceptively simple stories that …

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere Dec 1992

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

The purpose of this paper is to present some of the testimonies of liberal Orthodox theology in late Imperial Russia concerning the theology of Incarnation. Since it may come as a surprise to many people, even to many Orthodox, that a tradition of liberal theology existed in Russian Orthodoxy, the evidence I adduce may be of interest apart from the specific theological discussion to which it pertains.

Problem Of Liberal Orthodoxy In Russia, 1905, Paul Valliere Jan 1976

Problem Of Liberal Orthodoxy In Russia, 1905, Paul Valliere

Paul Valliere

By the problem of Liberal Orthodoxy we mean a particular instance of the all-European and, indeed, worldwide problem of the adjustment of living religious traditions to a dynamic and distinct modern culture claiming, in greater or lesser degree, spiritual and practical autonomy in the direction of human affairs. The great revolutions of modern times, of which the Russian Revolution of 1905 is one, are particular instances of the advancing of this claim of autonomy. Liberal Orthodoxy is any Orthodoxy in modern times which envisages at least some opportunities for constructive and cooperative relationships with the forces of this modern culture; …
