Introduction To Ritual Theory Ritual Practice, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

This book undertakes such an analysis in two ways: first, through a critical reading of how the notion of ritual has been used in the study of religion, society, and culture; and second, through an attempt to carve out an approach to ritual activities that is less encumbered by assumptions about thinking and acting and more disclosing of the strategies by which ritualized activities do what they do. I do not provide a comprehensive history of the term, a review of the most famous ethnographic examples, or a revised theory of ritual—useful though these projects might be. The purpose of …

How Does One Become Spiritual? The Spiritual Modeling Inventory Of Life Environments (Smile), Doug Oman, Carl E. Thoresen, Crystal L. Park, Philip R. Shaver, Ralph W. Hood, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

We report psychometric properties, correlates and underlying theory of the Spiritual Modeling Index of Life Environments (SMILE), a measure of perceptions of spiritual models, defined as everyday and prominent people who have functioned for respondents as exemplars of spiritual qualities, such as compassion, self-control, or faith. Demographic, spiritual, and personality correlates were examined in an ethnically diverse sample of college students from California, Connecticut, and Tennessee (N=1010). A summary measure of model influence was constructed from perceived models within family, school, religious organization, and among prominent individuals from both tradition and media. The SMILE, based on concepts from Bandura's (1986) …

God So Loved The World...Ministerial Religious Life In 2009, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

The Leadership Council invited me to speak about “vowed Religious Life” following an earlier and complementary presentation on the subject of Associates. In a sense, this is a bit like talking about “wet water” because the terms “vowed” and “Religious Life” are mutually implicating though not co-extensive. As all water is wet but not all wet things are water, so all Religious Life is vowed life but not all vowed life is Religious Life. Furthermore, there are many forms of vowed Religious Life such as monastic, mendicant, or apostolic and much that applies to one does not apply to another. …

Whose Sins You Shall Forgive....The Holy Spirit And The Forgiveness Of Sin(S) In The Fourth Gospel, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

When I was invited to give this lecture I was asked to speak about the Holy Spirit in relation to my own research interests. I am currently working on the Resurrection Narrative in the Gospel if John in relation to what I consider the most pressing issue in our world today, namely violence. My overarching question is the following: what are Christians called to be and do in the face of the escalating violence in our world? In this lecture I am focusing on John 20:19-23, the scene in which Jesus appears to his disciples on Easter evening and commissions …

The following seventeen hymns or himnos are to be found in Santa Clara Choral Book, as indicated by the page number given in parentheses. For instance, (CB, 65) means that the hymn transcribed can be found on page 65 of the Choral Book. The text is in Spanish, and the original notation appears in square notes on afa or ut clef, as in the rest of the Choral Book. I have transcribed all of these himnos into modem notation , in as many as four voice parts, as indicated in the Choral Book. Only the first strophe of each hymn …
