Becoming Lutheran: Exploring The Journey Of American Evangelicals Into Confessional Lutheran Thought, Matthew Richard
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to examine the journey of American Evangelicals into Lutheran thought. Otherwise stated, the research project studied the emotional struggles, linguistic confusion, worldview changes, and epistemological shifts that happen during the pilgrimage between two theological traditions.
The research findings are intended to identify valuable insights and provide avenues of comfort for those who are making this transition. Furthermore, the findings of this research are intended to aid Lutheran pastors as they care for and shepherd individuals who are coming into Lutheranism from American Evangelicalism.
The primary components of this study were the …
Promissio Spei God's Eschatological Action In The Church, Richard Aaron Davenport
Promissio Spei God's Eschatological Action In The Church, Richard Aaron Davenport
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Davenport, Richard A. "Promissio Spei: God's Eschatological Action in the Church. “Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2012. 213 pp.
This dissertation, a work in systematic theology, examines the nature of Christian hope in the context of current scholarship in systematic theology. Its goal is to assess the way in which Christian hope is rooted in God's word of promise and the extent to which that promise affects Christian life. The eschatological outlook presented in Scripture shows that God's promises, and the hope that they offer, are presented to all of creation. This dissertation investigates the process by which the communication of …

Rhetorical Rationale For The Compositional Integrity Of Second Corinthians, Mark Erickson
Rhetorical Rationale For The Compositional Integrity Of Second Corinthians, Mark Erickson
Master of Art Theology Thesis
The contention of this thesis, then, is: The Apostle Paul’s apparent use of ancient Greco-Roman rhetorical conventions in 2 Corinthians gives evidence of its compositional integrity and adequately accounts for the apparent partitions which, to some scholars, reveal the existence of multiple documents.
Manuscript 2193 And Its Text Of The Gospel According To John, Timothy Koch
Manuscript 2193 And Its Text Of The Gospel According To John, Timothy Koch
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis examines manuscript 2193 and its text of the Gospel according to John and contributes valuable information to the ongoing studies in New Testament textual criticism.
The introduction (Chapter 1) defines the topic, surveys the status of the question, and ..
In Chapter 2 the manuscript and external criteria are described. Special attention is paid to scribal conventions such as contractions, abbreviations, ligatures, punctuation, and nomina sacra. A significant discourse classifying the minuscule script according to the work of Thompson and Hatch is also provided. The chapter concludes with a subsection discussing the presence of multiple correctors who have …
Luther On Idolatry: A Lutheran Response To Contemporary False Belief, Michael Lockwood
Luther On Idolatry: A Lutheran Response To Contemporary False Belief, Michael Lockwood
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Lockwood, Michael A. "Luther on Idolatry: A Lutheran Response to Contemporary False Belief." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2013. 303 pp.
The first step in solving any problem is to understand the problem. As Christians we know that Christ is the solution to the human plight. Yet what exactly is this plight? And why do so many people feel no need for the solution he provides? Luther's answer is that people feel no need for the true God until they are disenchanted with the false gods they have put in his place, which they think can provide all they need.

Life In The Spirit: A Post-Constantinian And Trinitarian Account Of The Christian Life, Andrea Snavely
Life In The Spirit: A Post-Constantinian And Trinitarian Account Of The Christian Life, Andrea Snavely
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Snavely, Andrea D. "Life in the Spirit: A Post-Constantinian and Trinitarian Account of the Christian Life." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2013. 235 pp.
Post-Constantinians John Howard Yoder and Stanley Hauerwas have re-imagined the Christian as a follower of Jesus, critiquing natural theology's dominance that eclipses seeing Jesus' life as the "content" of a Christian's life. However, they lack an answer to the "energy” question, of how one lives like Jesus, because their theologies are based on Logos-Christology. This dissertation proposes that a complementary Spirit-Christology provides the answer to the “energy" question by describing Jesus' life as receiver, bearer, and giver …
An (Enduring) Ecclesiology Beyond The Cultural Captivity Of The Church, Chad Lakies
An (Enduring) Ecclesiology Beyond The Cultural Captivity Of The Church, Chad Lakies
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
This dissertation is located within the larger conversation about ecclesiology as it is emerging in our post-Christian era. Its effort is both theoretical and practical. Not only will it provide a theological account of the church, but it will do so for the sake of reflective practitioners who are looking for guidance in navigating and negotiating our post-Christian culture in the effort to form faithful Christians. Thus, this dissertation will articulate an ecclesiology of the Christian life, thereby enabling the church to diagnose, assess, and respond to contemporary instances of its own cultural captivity so that it might better embody …
The Biblical Text Of Pelagius In His Commentary On 2 Corinthians A New Reconstruction, Wilbert Stelzer
The Biblical Text Of Pelagius In His Commentary On 2 Corinthians A New Reconstruction, Wilbert Stelzer
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Stelzer, Wilbert, P. "The Biblical Text of Pelagius in His Commentary on 2 Corinthians: A New Reconstruction." PhD. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2013. 1767 pp.
What sort of Latin biblical text did Pelagius have when he wrote his commentary on the Pauline Epistles? Did he use an Old Latin text, a Vulgate text, or some mixture of the two? This question cannot be resolved by simply referring to the extant manuscripts since they are not in agreement.
Of the manuscripts that pass down Pelagius's early 5th century commentary, two stand out as more reliable than the rest. The Karlsruhe manuscript (A) …

Rhetorical Rationale For The Compositional Integrity Of Second Corinthians, Mark Erickson
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The contention of this thesis, then, is: The Apostle Paul's apparent use of ancient Greco-Roman rhetorical conventions in 2 Corinthians gives evidence of its compositional integrity and adequately accounts for the apparent partitions which, to some scholars, reveal the existence of multiple documents.
Our goal is not to assert that rhetorical criticism proves that 2 Corinthians is a single letter. It is rather to show that, given the textual evidence within the document, rhetorical criticism offers a plausible, even preferable, interpretation of the data in 2 Corinthians than prevailing composite theories.
Nor is our goal to defend the inerrancy, inspiration …
Pastor Is As Pastor Does – 2kf Ministry Model, Martin Brauer
Pastor Is As Pastor Does – 2kf Ministry Model, Martin Brauer
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
The primary purpose of this project was to introduce to pastors The Pastor Is As Pastor Does 2KF Ministry Model. This model has been implemented in the principle researcher’s congregation over the past six years. This model delineates between 2 Kinds of Functions in the church: pastoral and operational. The operation functions are then delegated to nonclergy paid and volunteer staff. This ministry model has improved the performance of both functions while also diminishing role confusion in and about the pastoral office. The secondary purpose of this project was to assist pastors in adapting this ministry model to their circumstance. …

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Oswald, Timothy J. “Christian Navy Chaplains and the Challenge of Expanding Religious Pluralism.” D.Min. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary – St. Louis. 2013. 245 pp.
Navy chaplains are expected to facilitate for the religious needs of those from other faiths. For chaplains who believe in the exclusivity of the Christian religion, this can create theological and even personal tensions about support for religious practices which the chaplain believes to be false.
This project explores those tensions and proposes ways to help exclusivist Navy chaplains navigate them. The final ministry product is a Power Point® brief. It draws from bibliographic research, …

Bible In Mission, Pauline Hoggarth, Fergus Macdonald, Bill Mitchell, Knud Jorgensen
Bible In Mission, Pauline Hoggarth, Fergus Macdonald, Bill Mitchell, Knud Jorgensen
Edinburgh Centenary Series
While the essays in this volume contribute individually to collective reflection on the Bible in mission, the larger significance of the book is greater than the sum of its parts. First it must be noted that the volume is part of the larger 2010 process, a collection of essays that grew from a “transversal” theme identified for the centennial of the World Missionary Conference at Edinburgh. As such, it joins a rich collection of contemporary missiological reflection generated by the series of 2010 meetings.
Mission As Ministry Of Reconciliation, Robert Schreiter, Knud Jorgensen
Mission As Ministry Of Reconciliation, Robert Schreiter, Knud Jorgensen
Edinburgh Centenary Series
The primary reason is that we view “reconciliation” as a new paradigm of mission. Related to this is a second reason, namely, that some of our major Christian traditions in recent years have dealt with and lifted up this focus on reconciliation.
Mission Spirituality And Authentic Discipleship, Wonsuk Ma, Kenneth Ross
Mission Spirituality And Authentic Discipleship, Wonsuk Ma, Kenneth Ross
Edinburgh Centenary Series
The book should be read not so much as the progressive elaboration of a logical argument but more as a kaleidoscope where each chapter sheds light on a particular form of mission spirituality so that, by the time the reader reaches the end, a comprehensive global picture has come into view.

Foundations For Mission, Emma Wild-Wood, Peniel Rajkumar
Foundations For Mission, Emma Wild-Wood, Peniel Rajkumar
Edinburgh Centenary Series
Three broad foundations for a theology of mission are identified and explored in this volume. Mission begins with the nature of the loving, triune God, the intentions and actions of God are revealed to humanity by the Holy Spirit, through the vehicles of God’s word, the Bible, our experience and theology.
