The Responsibility Of The Church To Offer Guidance To Parents With Regard To The Personality Development Of The Child, Edgar P. Senne

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is from such evidence and from such thinking that the desire to study the problem arises. Where do parents fail? What kind of help would assist them in doing a better job? Is the problem in any way a concern or a responsibility of the Church? If so, how can this responsibility be carried out? These are some of the questions which the study undertakes to answer.

A Critique Of The Orders Of Matins And Vespers And The Offering Of A New Musical Setting, Robert Bergt Jun 1958

A Critique Of The Orders Of Matins And Vespers And The Offering Of A New Musical Setting, Robert Bergt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis directs special attention to the last point. The musical settings of The Lutheran Hymnal are borrowed from Anglican and Gregorian traditions. This is not to say that Anglican and Gregorian chant per se are bad and unusable. Those responsible for putting the texts, tunes and accompaniments together did something adequate a generation ago. The present author believes that we have outgrown these and need to offer what will set off a new spark, a new life and love for Matins and Vespers. New musical settings may assist the renaissance.

After a brief historical background is given to …

The Study Of The Messianic Secret In St. Mark, Robert Strickert

The approach in this thesis will be to present the views that have been held by some of these men.

Education In Meaningful Worship For The Confirmation Class, Paul Wagner Jun 1958

Education In Meaningful Worship For The Confirmation Class, Paul Wagner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem undertaken by the thesis is tied to this need for meaningful worship and the lack of materials. While books and articles have appeared from time to time, they have all been concerned primarily with phases of parish education other than the confirmation class. In Missouri Synod circles there have been only a very few significant works on worship education at any level. The purpose,, therefore, was to survey as many works in this area as time would permit and synthesize the findings into a workable approach toward the teaching of worship and the Liturgy in the confirmation class.

The Eschatology Of The Book Of Acts, Robert Smith Jun 1958

The Eschatology Of The Book Of Acts, Robert Smith

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The method employed in this thesis is what someone has described as phenomenological in contrast to genetic. This paper is interested in the eschatology of the Book of Acts in its present state. Nowhere does this study attempt to isolate the eschatology of the primitive church in the city of Jerusalem, or the eschatology of the Hellenistic community, or the eschatology of Paul according to the Acts.

The Sacrements And Sacremental Actions In The Works Of August Friedrich Chrisitan Vilmar, Edward Peters Jun 1958

The Sacrements And Sacremental Actions In The Works Of August Friedrich Chrisitan Vilmar, Edward Peters

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper is limited in its main part to what August Vilmar had to say about the Sacraments and what he termed “sacramental actions" ( sakramentale Handlungen). It is difficult, in a few words, to determine just what Vilmar included under these terms because in keeping with the Lutheran Symbols he did not categorically limit the Sacraments to a certain number and exclude all other acts of the Church. In certain contexts he spoke of seven and more Sacraments, and in other contexts, of only two Sacraments, placing the lesser acts of the Church into the category “sacramental” actions." In …

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto Jun 1958

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study does not attempt to add to the material on the history of the congregations or to the analyses of their graces and defects, zeal and lukewarmness. Rather, a portion of what: has been written was restudied from the standpoint: of the relationship between the self-designation3 and the contents of the letters against the backdrop of the Christology of the Apocalypse.

The biologist and the physicist must begin with certain assumption~. To claim otherwise reveals ignorance and vanity. The theologian, too, must begin somewhere. This study assumes that the Bible is the Word of God, that an inspiration without …

An Experimental Course For Adult Confirmation Structured By The Nicene Creed, Paul Malte

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Through involvement as an instructor in the adult confirmation process of the Missouri Synod, and being aware of the obvious openness of the American citizen to religious conversation, the writer has undertaken a study of the needs and opportunities om this area. Specifically, the research and creative activity embodied in this thesis has been worked out in the direction of materials and course outlines for the adult confirmation process. An attempt has been made to survey representative courses shaped by pastors in the Missouri Synod and popular presentations of the basic Gospel written by men of other denominations. This exploration …

The Tennessee Synod--It's History And Church Polity, Alvin Kollmann Jun 1958

The Tennessee Synod--It's History And Church Polity, Alvin Kollmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In considering the factors that played an important role in causing the establishment of the Tennessee Synod, it is necessary to consider the conditions in the Lutheran Church in .America especially during the years between 1800 and 1820. The conditions that must be considered are, in the order in which they will be treated in this chapter, rationalism, unionism, the language problem, the training of pastors, education and literature available at the time, and revivalism. A few observations on the pros and cons about the Tennessee Synod joining the General Synod or remaining out of that organization will then conclude …

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

And the special study on South Africa in Chapter VII is an application of the findings of the thesis to the most crucial area of Western racism at the present time.

Religious Influences In Louisiana Elections (1924-1956), Benjamin Franklin Veit Jun 1958

Religious Influences In Louisiana Elections (1924-1956), Benjamin Franklin Veit

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper attempts to discover the existence, if any, of religious influences in Louisiana elections since 1924. Several reasons bear upon both the selection of the state and the period. The author chose the State of Louisiana because it occupies a rather peculiar place in American politics. Typically a Southern state, Louisiana lacks, at least on the surface, a two-party system. Hence the complication of conflict between party loyalty and religious affiliation is removed. Louisiana is typical or the states of the South in that it contains a considerable Roman Catholic population. Indeed, the National Council of Churches has listed …

Christian Growth And The Word Of God, Mark Steege Jun 1958

Christian Growth And The Word Of God, Mark Steege

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The relation of the two concepts, Christian growth and the Word of God, will be one of the chief concerns of this study; but almost equal to it in importance will be the proper understanding of a number of the factors involved: (a) God's revelation of His holy will rewarding Christian growth; (b) Man's nature before and after conversion with special reference to his relation to God; (c) The possibility of Christian growth, indicating God's approach to man in His Word; (d) The responsibility for Christian growth as indicated in the Word; (e) The ideal Christian life, as described in …

Johann Sebastian Bach As Interpreter Of Scripture In The Passion Of Our Lord According To St. Matthew, William George Naumann Jun 1958

Johann Sebastian Bach As Interpreter Of Scripture In The Passion Of Our Lord According To St. Matthew, William George Naumann

Bachelor of Divinity

With regard to the study or the St. Matthew Passion, or of any of Bach's works, the basic assumption must be Bach's familiarity with and loyalty to the teachings of the Lutheran Church .

Such a study has limitations. Any study of musical interpretation falls into the dangers of subjectivism. This is easily seen by the wide variance of opinion on perhaps the same musical form.

The Responsibility Of The Church To Offer Guidance To Parents With Regard To The Personality Development Of The Child, Edgar P. Senne Jun 1958

The Responsibility Of The Church To Offer Guidance To Parents With Regard To The Personality Development Of The Child, Edgar P. Senne

Mishpat And Zedeq In The Eighth-Century Prophets, James P. Rath Jun 1958

Mishpat And Zedeq In The Eighth-Century Prophets, James P. Rath

Bachelor of Divinity

We have attempted, in this thesis, to find the sources and authorities most competent to lead us along the way toward understanding what progression of revelation actually did take place in the writings as we have them from the eighth century. That there are other authorities which perhaps should have been consulted should not be denied; but we feel that the presentation as it is here sufficiently proves that these prophets were truly led by God to make a great advance over their predecessors.

Luther's Concept Of The Two Kingdoms And The American Situation, Walter Charles Pieper Jun 1958

Luther's Concept Of The Two Kingdoms And The American Situation, Walter Charles Pieper

The Doctrine Of Christ's Exaltation In Luther's Theology, Gerhard Galchutt Jun 1958

The Doctrine Of Christ's Exaltation In Luther's Theology, Gerhard Galchutt

Bachelor of Divinity

If we, us Lutherans, are within Western Protestantism, it would hardly be possible for us to escape the influence of this milieu. And this writer believes this influence and its effects are readily found also within or own church body. There may be no traces of this influence in our doctrine and theological discussion, but it might become manifest already.in our cultus and then in some of our religious publications and devotional art for popular consumption. If so, this thesis has a very “practical” bent. It tries to set forth Luther's doctrine of the exalted Christ as a corrective for …

The Paradoxical Content Of The Title Son Of Man, Arno M. Klausmeier Jun 1958

The Paradoxical Content Of The Title Son Of Man, Arno M. Klausmeier

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem with which this thesis will be occupied is the determination of the content of the title "Son of Man" and demonstrating the sources of this content. An investigation of this sort will prove that the content of "Son of Man” is anything but simple; it is paradoxical. Since this title is Jesus' favorite self-designation, writer and reader are justified to expect growth in the "knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

The Kingdom Of God In The Old Testament, Robert Edward Wolter Jun 1958

The Kingdom Of God In The Old Testament, Robert Edward Wolter

Bachelor of Divinity

The sole purpose of this thesis is to trace the origin of the Kingdom of God from the beginning of time, creation, to the time of Christ. The development of the Kingdom of God will be traced through four specific areas: the Patriarchal, the Mosaic, the Royal, and the Prophetic. Within each of these areas it should be kept in mind that God is using people to spread His Kingdom. The fourth chapter will give a brief summary of the Jewish concept concerning the Kingdom. As for reference to the Covenant Idea, the Son of Man in Daniel, the Suffering …
