The Validity Of Conditional Prayer And The Providence Of God, Robert Spieler Jun 1950

The Validity Of Conditional Prayer And The Providence Of God, Robert Spieler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the problem stated towards the end of' establishing unequivocally the fact that conditional prayer is a valid reality in the realm of God's providence. A solution of the problem is, of course, impossible on any other premises except those which are faithful to Scripture. It will be noted how the systems of rational philosophy serve only to establish the impossibility of reconciling the fact of God’s providence with the fact of conditional prayer. According to such systems, the problem is usually solved by denying either the reality of conditional prayer or …

The Geological Implications Of Genesis Ch 1-11, Fred Kramer Jun 1950

The Geological Implications Of Genesis Ch 1-11, Fred Kramer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is written on the premise that God has given man two books from which he may learn to know Him, the book or nature and the Holy Scripture. There can be no contradiction between these two books. Where men have affirmed contradictions between them, e.g., on scientific grounds, they either misinterpreted scientific data or the words or Scripture.

The New Testament Concept Of The Son Of Man, John Fritz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The term “Son of Man" was Jesus ‘favorite self-designation. It occurs approximately eighty times in the Gospel records. Though Jesus accepted as appropriate titles for Himself such terms as Messiah, Son of David, the Christ, the Son of God, He at times expressly called Himself the Son of Man in replying to those, who addressed Him with some other title (John 1:49 ,51; Matthew 18: 19, 20).

The Prophectic Office Of Christ And The Power Of The Word, Ralph Fischer Jun 1950

The Prophectic Office Of Christ And The Power Of The Word, Ralph Fischer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In order to show the power, which the Holy Spirit exerts through the Word, a short section will be devoted to His relationship to the Word. The concluding chapters will set forth the characteristics and the efficacy of the Word. In addition, each section of the outline will be considered as a separate chapter throughout the entire thesis. …

The Parenthesis Of Paul On The Status Of Israel In Romans Nine To Eleven, Erdmann Frenk Jun 1950

The Parenthesis Of Paul On The Status Of Israel In Romans Nine To Eleven, Erdmann Frenk

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

During the past few years and months, especially during the time the new Zionist state of Israel was being formed, much discussion has arisen regarding an age-old problem of an age-old people. Where do these people who have been the modern heirs of a tradition some thousands of years old fit into present-day civilization? However, for the Church, these external and secular happenings have served as a reminder of an even greater problem, namely, where does this people fit in spiritually? What is to happen to this tribe from which the Redeemer Himself stemmed? And this is no new problem, …

The Shekinah Concept In The Biblical Era, Horace D. Hummel Jun 1950

The Shekinah Concept In The Biblical Era, Horace D. Hummel

Bachelor of Divinity

In brief, the problem, common to the Old Testament, as to all other religious and to all except atheistic philosophies, is that of God’s transcendence vs. His immanence. If God is the Creator, the Absolute, the Prime Mover, what contact, if any, can He have with the created, sensible universe? If the pantheistic solution of identifying creator and creation is rejected, some degree of divine transcendence must be predicated. If He is transcendent, how will he reveal Himself to mankind? Through intermediaries, or by self-revelation; and, if the latter, by theophany or incarnation?

A Christian Interpretation Of Sex, Richard Scheimann Jun 1950

A Christian Interpretation Of Sex, Richard Scheimann

A Study Of Αιωn In Paul's Epistles, G Waldemar Degner Jun 1950

A Study Of Αιωn In Paul's Epistles, G Waldemar Degner

Bachelor of Divinity

There are chiefly three purposes in this study. The first is to gain a better understanding of the Scriptures. To achieve this purpose an individual word has been selected, since it is the author's opinion that such a study will contribute most to a conviction of the unity of the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments and at the same time facilitate efficiency in handling certain basic mechanical tools for further the future studies, such as the concordances, lexicon, and commentaries.

Pastoral Counseling-, Karl A. Tubesing Jun 1950

Pastoral Counseling-, Karl A. Tubesing

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose and intent of this thesis is not that it be an exhaustive treatise of the subject, which it is not, nor that it be a critical analysis of that which has been written on the subject, but rather that it set forth in clear review certain fundamental and basic definitions and principles of Pastoral Counseling, which when understood, will help to clarify the present seeming confusion. It is the author’s fond hope that in some small way this thesis may help to accomplish this result. To this end this thesis is an attempt to define Pastoral Counseling as …

Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz Jun 1950

Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the present writer in this thesis has been to determine just how Paul went about treating and refuting the error. What were his arguments and attitudes over against his converts? His opponents? The error itself? Were his arguments sound and convincing? Does he leave room for compromise? To what degree does he allow his own self to enter the picture? In attempting to answer these questions, the writer has endeavored at all times to maintain objectivity except where a difference of opinion among leading commentators forced him to exercise selectivity. Detailed exegesis has been kept to a …

The Defensor Pacis Of Marsilius Of Padua And Its Relation To The Reformation, August Bernthal Jun 1950

The Defensor Pacis Of Marsilius Of Padua And Its Relation To The Reformation, August Bernthal

Bachelor of Divinity

Any event in history that is linked in either a small or large way to the Reformation demands investigation. In examining the causes and the background of the Protestant uprising in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; historians usually make mention of the Defensor Pacis written by Marsilius of Padua in 1624. Some make much of it. Others ignore it. Yet the Defensor Pacis, directed as it is against Pope John XXII, remains the most daring and the most independent ecclesiastic-politica1 work of the entire medieval period. Whether this document in any way influences the Reformation this thesis will endeavor to …

The Meaning Of Κοινωνεω In Galatians 6:6, Karl F. Breehne Jun 1950

The Meaning Of Κοινωνεω In Galatians 6:6, Karl F. Breehne

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem treated in this thesis arose in an exegetical course on the Epistle to the Galatians when a sharp divergence of interpretations was noticed among several commentators who were consulted in collateral reading. Luther, L. Fuerbringer and William Arndt (the last two in class lectures at Concordia Seminary) held what may be termed the traditional view. According to this view the passage calls for material support of the ministry on the part of the parishioners. It is in this sense, too, that the passage is ordinarily explained in the exposition of Dr. Luther's Small Catechism under the Third Commandment.

The Origin And History Of Indulgences Up To The Time Of The German Reformation With Emphasis On Luther's Attitude Toward Them, Orval M. Oswald

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is being written with the hope of giving a clear and accurate account of the origin and development of the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Indulgence up to the time of the German Reformation, with particular emphasis on the effect it had on the people and Luther’s reasons for opposing it. Entire volumes have been written on the history of indulgences alone, and countless pages on their relationship to Luther' and the Reformation. It is an impossibility to consider all the material written on this subject in a thesis of this sort, but the author feels that he …

English Preaching Before The Reformation- A Historical, Structural, And Critical Survey, With An Anthology Of Sermons 950-1550, Theodore John Kleinhans Jun 1950

English Preaching Before The Reformation- A Historical, Structural, And Critical Survey, With An Anthology Of Sermons 950-1550, Theodore John Kleinhans

Bachelor of Divinity

Whatever the reasons for the lack of interest, this thesis intends to examine, evaluate, and summarize the status of early English preaching. It is novel in that it combines a resume of preaching with the actual sermons themselves. Part one explains how the preacher went about making his sermon, and what, when, where, and how he preached; Part Two elaborates these generalizations with specific sermons or excerpts, the headnotes explaining and highlighting the major features of an individual selection.

Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush Jun 1950

Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush

The Lutheran Education Association assumed the task of compiling a bibliography of research studies in religious education to fill the need for such a catalogue. It should be suggestive for future research studies in religious education and should serve to prevent duplication of effort as well as to suggest areas of study not previously covered or covered inadequately.

The Roman Catholic And Lutheran Doctrine Of Sin, Alfred Frank Volmer Jun 1950

The Roman Catholic And Lutheran Doctrine Of Sin, Alfred Frank Volmer

Bachelor of Divinity

However, while there are apparent similarities, it must be pointed out that the actual similarity or dissimilarity of churches does not consist in their external rites and ceremonies but in their teachings. Therefore, in order to get an accurate picture, it is necessary that we examine the doctrine of each church. However, since we cannot treat all the doctrines we shall take a basic one, namely, the doctrine of sin. The writer will attempt to set forth the official teachings of both churches on this one doctrine.

Emil Brunner's Criticisms Of The Epistemology Of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Hubert Riedel Jun 1950

The Logos Concept Of Justin Martyr-Relation To The Person, The Natures, And The States Of Existence Of The Logos, Marcus T. Lang

Bachelor of Divinity

The main purpose, or course, of' the apologies in general, and of the use or the Logos concept in these apologies in particular, was to present to the unbelieving world a justification for the worship of' Christ by the Christians. Since the Logos concept was a current and accepted one in both the pagan and Jewish world, if it could successfully be identified with the person of Jesus Christ, a great victory would be won. And, to a large degree, that attempt was eventually successful, as Dean Inge points out when he characterizes the Logos-doctrine as "the formula which converted …

Amerindian Creation Myths And A Common Tradition, Robert L. Lail Jun 1950

Amerindian Creation Myths And A Common Tradition, Robert L. Lail

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus the reader has been led to the subject of this thesis. He is aware of a universal consistency of beliefs. It is quite evident that there is a likeness between these beliefs and the accounts of Scripture. The reader is also aware of the fact that there is a difference of opinion among students of anthropology concerning the origin of these similarities. With this overall view in mind, the author has decided to limit the investigation to creation myths, and, with these, the concept of a Creator-God. The author has limited the thesis further to myths and fragments of …
