The Concept Of Prophet In New Testament, Emil Mach Jun 1949

The Concept Of Prophet In New Testament, Emil Mach

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the German universities the prophets were looked upon as “mad fellows”. Indeed any idea of God revealing Himself to men was frowned upon and I was left with doubts. The material of this thesis has convinced me that God takes great care to reveal Himself to man and that we may place our trust in His revelation of Himself. So, by this work, my whole Christian faith has been more firmly established.

Pagan Elements In The Catholicism Of Guatemala, Fred Pankow Jun 1949

Pagan Elements In The Catholicism Of Guatemala, Fred Pankow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the purpose of this thesis, then, to demonstrate that the people of Guatemala are not even truly Roman Catholic, much less Christian. We shall likewise present the reason for this fact, namely, that some teachings and many practices of the Roman Catholic Church in Guatemala were taken over directly from the Indian religions. Hence the title of this thesis shall be: "Pagan Elements in the Teaching of and the Practices of Roman Catholicism in Guatemala.”

The Salutary Use Of Corporate Prayer With Special Reference To The Community Of The Congregation, Howard E. Claycombe Jr May 1949

The Salutary Use Of Corporate Prayer With Special Reference To The Community Of The Congregation, Howard E. Claycombe Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

In the life of the Christian prayer is to the soul as breathing is to the body. We sing in the hymn "Prayer is the Christian's vital breath un-uttered or expressed.” Although we know the reasons for praying, the how and the why of it all, and although volumes have been written on the subject, yet it appears that much of the praying in our church is very formal and awkward. We know how and why to pray but do we really pray? The purpose of this study is to particularly isolate and point up the problem of praying together. …

The Founding And Early Development Of The Lutheran Philippine Mission, John G. Scholz May 1949

The Founding And Early Development Of The Lutheran Philippine Mission, John G. Scholz

Bachelor of Divinity

As the title indicates, this thesis represents an attempt of the writer to set forth clearly the events which lead up to the founding and early development of the Philippine Mission. To make this study, it was necessary to read the autobiography of Alvaro Carino and see the mysterious workings of God in directing this man to become a member of the Lutheran Church and eventually the Church's first pioneer Filipino missionary to the Philippines. The present study of the Lutheran Philippine Mission will take the reader up to the end of December, 1951.

The Philosophy Of Descartes As A Method Of Assurance, Richard Edward Graef May 1949

The Philosophy Of Descartes As A Method Of Assurance, Richard Edward Graef

Bachelor of Divinity

Although it is true that many have found fault with Descartes calling his proofs for the existence of God doubtful, and his understanding of the relationship of mind and matter fallacious, he is worthy of study because of his contribution to the doctrine of certainty. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss Descartes’ philosophy as a method of certainty.

The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin May 1949

The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin

Bachelor of Divinity

The Eucharistic Prayer was originally the chief and only prayer in the liturgy; it was “the heart of the liturgy.” It derives its name from the fact that Christ “gave thanks" when He instituted the Lord's Supper. Thus it is a prayer of thanksgiving at the celebration of the Blessed Sacrament which states the meaning of the Eucharistic action, "Do this." "Since this prayer was originally ‘the' prayer, the only prayer in the whole rite. It was there that the whole meaning of the rite had to be stated, if it was to be put into words at all in …

Jesuit Action In England, Lyle R. Mueller May 1949

Jesuit Action In England, Lyle R. Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

JESUIT ACTION IN ENGLAND brings before us one of the most Interesting periods in the history of England, be it political or ecclesiastical. For it combines both classes of history into one interwoven pattern. It is not merely a recitation of cold facts, of days and times and events. But it is full of romance, intrigue, cunning, tragedy, courage, and suspense. This is the story of the birth of the Church of England, of its struggles in its infancy to establish itself in a world hostile to its innovations and determined to destroy it.

The Spheres Of Action Of The Inquisition In The Counter-Reformation, Paul E. Krohn May 1949

The Spheres Of Action Of The Inquisition In The Counter-Reformation, Paul E. Krohn

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper, we will endeavor to set down the special spheres of action of this institution in regard to the quenching of various heresies which arose within the church. As we refer to the term heretics at various times, let it be understood that we are viewing people as heretics as those who deviated from the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. This will be done only for the sake of clarity, not to prove that they were either wrong or right in their beliefs.

Psychology In The Service Of A Lutheran Pastor, Alfred A. Bodtke May 1949

Psychology In The Service Of A Lutheran Pastor, Alfred A. Bodtke

Bachelor of Divinity

Every pastor ought to have some knowledge or psychology. It is true, a pastor is first and foremost a theologian. As a theologian he must learn rightly to interpret the Divine Word and bring its precious truth to the people under his care. In doing this, the pastor through God's grace and help is benefiting his people for time and for eternity. If in addition to being a good theologian, a pastor knows some or the most important principles of psychology, he will the better be able to apply this Word of God, especially so in the case of such …

The Authorship Of The Fourth Gospel In Present-Day Thought, Walter Heyne May 1949

The Authorship Of The Fourth Gospel In Present-Day Thought, Walter Heyne

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It ls the purpose of this paper to explore recent literature to ascertain the prevailing views on this subject. The available English and German literature which has appeared since approximately 1915 has been surveyed to determine mainly this one thing: What is the current thinking on the subject of the authorship of John’s Gospel? In this sense, this is largely a statistical study, and no particular effort has been made to distinguish between the authority and scholarship of those whose opinion are presented. The date 1915 was selected as the terminus a quo since the second decade of our century …

How and why did they originate? What brought them into existence? These questions we will take up in this paper, showing the needs of the times which were met or were supposed to be met through the Monastic Orders we have just mentioned.

In Christ Jesus An Approach To The Ε̂ŴΜα Τoȗ Χειδτοȗ Concept Through The Pauline Use Of The E’V Xeidtω̑ Formula, Walter Bartling

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

All modern studies of' the ’ΕνΧειδτοȗ formula have as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of Adolf Deissmann, which appeared in 1892. It is hardly possible to overestimate the influence this book has had upon research in Pauline theology, not only upon study of the problem to which it is immediately directed, but especially also upon inquiries into the nature of Pauline "mysticism". Its influence on interpreters of the δ̂wμαΧειδτοȗ concept will become apparent as we proceed somewhat atlength to present Deissmann’s argument. All modern studies of' the ’Εν Χειδτοȗ formula have as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of …

An Interpretation Of The Epistle Of St. Jude, William Hassold May 1949

An Interpretation Of The Epistle Of St. Jude, William Hassold

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Luther's attitude towards the letter of Jude, as he himself says, was influenced by three factors: 1) its close resemblance to part of 2 Peter; 2) its use of material found nowhere else in Scripture; 3) its rejection by many of the Church fathers. We shall have to consider each of these matters in formulating our opinion of the letter of Jude.

The Ending Of St Mark's Gospel A Study In Textual Criticism, Henry Hamann May 1949

The Ending Of St Mark's Gospel A Study In Textual Criticism, Henry Hamann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The writer, rather immodestly it may be held, can -not accept the principles enunciated by WH .and accepted by many textual critics since, and accordingly a rather large section of the present study is given over to a critical-analysis of the principles of WH and the formulation of· other critical principles, which form the foundation upon which the real work is raised.

The Brethren Of The Lord And Their Relation To Jesus, Norman Wangerin May 1949

The Brethren Of The Lord And Their Relation To Jesus, Norman Wangerin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is my purpose to examine these various hypotheses in the light of tradition and Scripture. Thus the theories themselves will first be discussed briefly. Next they will be examined on the basis of the references to this problem in the literature of the early Church. Finally, the Scripture passages which have a bearing on the subject will be taken up. The correct interpretation of these passages is after all the real key to the problem.

The Typological Method Of Biblical Interpretation: An Investigation, Willard Burce

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It was the original object of this study to investigate these three questions. The subject is very large, however. It. seems more salutary to deal for the first with the history of typology and to see how exegetes of the Church down through the years have faced the problems of understanding and discussing types.

The Religious Beliefs And Practices Of The Ancient Slavs, George Dolak May 1949

The Religious Beliefs And Practices Of The Ancient Slavs, George Dolak

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The religion of the pagan Slavs seems to have been a purely domestic religion with the idea of a state religion not entering into the S1avic concept of one’s relation to the supreme being. The religion of the early Slavs has also been characterized as of the non-fanatical type. It is a question as to whether such a statement permits of a broad application. As a matter of fact Orloff limits it to the religion or the Southern Slavs maintaining that it was of a purer kind than the Scandinavian or that of the northwestern Slavs.

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller May 1949

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

To illustrate: if there are five passages that all bring out point "A" of the pre-determined outline of the doctrine, it is not necessary to treat all five passages just to show that point "A" is covered in the epistle. If this procedure seems somewhat arbitrary, we state again that the purpose of this thesis is merely to show how completely the doctrine of Christ's humanity has been revealed in the epistle to the Hebrews.

The Evangelistic Methods Of Dwight L. Moody, Richard F. Wagner May 1949

The Evangelistic Methods Of Dwight L. Moody, Richard F. Wagner

The Concept Of Sin In The Old Testament, Holland H. Jones May 1949

The Concept Of Sin In The Old Testament, Holland H. Jones

Bachelor of Divinity

The fact that the invitation to believe is always prededed, in Scripture, by the call to repentance reveals the necessity for an extensive knowledge of sin and it consequences. Scripture teaches that we must be conscious of and sorry for our sins before we can be drawn to the Gospel of Christ.
