This essay seeks to discover to what extent Episcopalians were a part of liberalism's attempt to answer the questions to doctrine presented by science, biblical criticism and the complexities of modern life. Philli.ps Brooks, a popular preacher; Alexander V. G. Allen, an acclaimed historian and seminary teacher", and William S. Rainsford, an architect of the institutional church pattern of social service are discussed as representative figures of those different ministries.
