Is Humour Worth A Try In The Language Classroom, Pramarn Subphadoongchone Dec 2001

Is Humour Worth A Try In The Language Classroom, Pramarn Subphadoongchone

PASAA

For traditional language teaching, activities providing students with various learning routines tend to dominate the class. Though the primary goal of teaching is to have students experience the use of language, it is often detrimental if the class overemphasizes rote learning, especially for lower motivated students. Most language classes suffer from this mode of teaching as it creates tension in class and also a great deal of boredom. This may lead to negative feelings about language learning and in turn hinder learning.

Beliefs About Learning Efl: A Study Of Thai Female High School Students, Ania Saorin Iborra, Miguel F. Ruiz Garrido

PASAA

Four aspects of beliefs were studied: beliefs about the difficulty of English language learning, beliefs about foreign language aptitude, beliefs about the nature of language learning, and beliefs about communicative strategies. Questionnaires, adapted from BALLI (Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory), were used to collect the data. In addition, descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The results demonstrated that the students held beliefs that are …

Twenty Questions About Action Research, Kathleen M. Bailey

Still, there is some confusion in our field about what action research is, how it is done, and whether or not it is a legitimate form of academic research. In this brief literature review, a variety of sources will be used to address these concerns.

The Esl Program At The University Of Weissnichtwo, Samue J. Sackett Dec 2001

The Esl Program At The University Of Weissnichtwo, Samue J. Sackett

PASAA

The University of Weissnichtwo, situated on the shores of Lake Wobegon, has received national attention for its championship horseshoe team, but little notice has been given to its success in providing training in English for the international students who have flocked to the campus. These students have not been attracted by the university's academic programs; its most prestigious program, research into cold-climate flax production, has little applicability in Africa, Central America, or Southeast Asia, which supply a full 20 percent of the university's entire student body.

Self-Evaluation Of Language Skills And Non-Linguistic Factors Through Www And E-Mail Tasks, Kanchana Prapphal

PASAA

This article aims at studying students' self-evaluation regarding their language skills and non-linguistic factors, i.e. cognitive skills, affect and IT knowledge in performing net tasks. Collaborative learning through the use of web sites and e-mail was tried out with twenty-five first year Engineering students at Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, Thailand in June 1998. The study was repeated in the same year with thirty-two first year Pharmaceutical Science students of the same institute to obtain valid and reliable conclusions. The analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data shows positive feedback of employing two net tasks to supplement the regular English courses.

The Genre Of Tourist Leaflets, Ania Saorin Iborra, Miguel F. Ruiz Garrido

PASAA

There have been many studies of Genre Analysis justifying the pedagogical implications of the Discourse Analysis system in the ESP classroom. Most of them have focused on research articles, medical texts, legislative documents and business correspondence, but little has been done about tourist texts. Based on the communicative purpose that several authors (Swales, 1990; Bhatia, 1993; Andersen, 1998) take as an essential criterion for defining a genre, we have selected 12 tourist leaflets to analyse their move structure. We have observed whether the stages of each text present a common order and content related to some specific intention for the …

Tales To Tell, Chatraporn Lertvatrakan Dec 2001

Tales To Tell, Chatraporn Lertvatrakan

PASAA

Preparing a lesson plan on "narration" cannot be considered simple since it involves various aspects of language such as tenses, logical thinking, chronology, clause connectors (time markers), or even plots, characters, climaxes etc. How do teachers prepare their students to be good story tellers or writers? Most of the time, we value the product more than the process which generates the product. However, students need some incentive. Giving students tales or stories to read can help them understand the elements of good narrative that will eventually enhance their ability in both narrative writing and story telling. This is because common …

Peer Assessment Of Oral Presentations: What These Two Cases Tell Us, Anil Pathak, Chan Soon Keng Jul 2001

Peer Assessment Of Oral Presentations: What These Two Cases Tell Us, Anil Pathak, Chan Soon Keng

PASAA

This paper explores the use of peer assessments of oral presentations in teaching and evaluation. The experiment was conducted on undergraduate and graduate university students of communication courses. While the undergraduates were asked to evaluate their peers' oral presentations using a rather structured assessment sheet, the graduate students used a relatively open feedback sheet. A comparison was made between the peer ratings and teacher ratings. It was found that the graduate students differed significantly from the teachers' ratings and other peer ratings. The undergraduates, however, displayed a tendency towards uniformity and towards a broad agreement with the teacher ratings. The …

Learning English Though Songs, Subhasinee Rajhandaraks Jul 2001

Learning English Though Songs, Subhasinee Rajhandaraks

PASAA

Out of the four skills of English, it would seem rather convincing to state that listening is the one that foreign students practise least. The why and wherefore is that most EFL instructors tend to pay more attention to linguistic competence, an approach which is reflected in the use of grammar-based materials. In addition, being trapped in the traditional approach of teaching English, instructors are more likely to concentrate on reading and writing rather than speaking and listening. Lastly, when students leave the classroom, there are few opportunities to listen to English. However, there is a cunningly lighthearted solution. Here, …

Interlanguage Analysis As An Input To Grammar-Teaching, Tony T.N. Hung Jul 2001

Interlanguage Analysis As An Input To Grammar-Teaching, Tony T.N. Hung

PASAA

The last decade has seen a revival of interest in the teaching of grammar, though in a different form from 50 years ago. Regardless of the approach one adopts, it is important for teachers to try to gain a deeper insight into the 'interlanguage' grammars of their learners - i.e., the internalized linguistic systems, approximating the target language system but differing from it in various ways, which enable learners to generate the same kinds of sentences repeatedly, and which can account for the persistent errors that they make. The present paper argues for the importance of an analysis of the …

In Search Of An Optimal Writing Feedback Strategy, Supanee Chinnawongs Jul 2001

In Search Of An Optimal Writing Feedback Strategy, Supanee Chinnawongs

PASAA

Writing is a language skill most EFL students have problems with. This is due to several factors such as the inherent complexity of the skill itself, a lack of constant practice and inadequate or inappropriate corrective feedback. This paper reports on an exploratory study on writing feedback strategies in which a three-step procedure, that is peer comment, self-evaluation and teacher reformulation, is proposed. Results revealed a positive attitude in the students towards this collaborative feedback strategy. Students demonstrated their skills as critical readers and evaluators. Suggestions and implications are also discussed.

The results revealed the following: 1) the conferencing and peer feedback activities were highly valued by the majority of the learners, 2) the learners had the same expectations from both feedback activities, and 3) some problems occurring from the …

How To Make An English For Business And Technology International Programme Accessible To Learners, Kulaporn Hiranburana

PASAA

This paper will suggest the incorporation of ongoing process-oriented practices, for example, student journals and interviews, into the design of English for Business and Technology (EBT) international programs. This will complement the product model of the EBT program which includes analysis of target situations, needs analysis, specifications of goals and objectives, sequencing learning content, syllabus checklisting, and assessment and evaluation. This approach to EBT course design will make the program more accessible to learners and enable teachers and program practitioners to enhance learner awareness of language variation and critical thinking. This paper will focus on these common features shared by …
