This article analyses how Fignolé’s book puts into words an unbearable state sprung from the chaos of slavery. This is an oxymoronic writing experience, because how can the unspeakable be named? Writing is not thought here, but rather a driving force digging into an intimate movement of rebellion and using language in a glib form, free from conscious meaning and logic, in order to reveal a preconscious meaning. The writer then becomes an archaeologist of pain. He tries to transcribe the scream in splintered space and time, so that memory finds landmarks once again. Writing thus becomes an experience aiming …

There are many female characters with sick/mutilated bodies in Guadeloupe and Martinique’s female literature. Madness, anorexia, self-mutilation, even the suicide of these female characters not only denounce a repressive social order inherited from the history of slavery, but also represent means to affect a social environment that is not responsive to the female quest for identity. Madness, crisis or acts of self-mutilation allow them to escape (“marronnage”) a system, which tries to negate their very existence.

Enabling The Asian American Electorate: 2003 Voter Registration In Eleven Massachusetts Cities And Towns, Paul Watanabe, Michael Liu Dec 2004

Enabling The Asian American Electorate: 2003 Voter Registration In Eleven Massachusetts Cities And Towns, Paul Watanabe, Michael Liu

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

For many in Massachusetts’ rapidly growing Asian American community, political participation is a vehicle to expand opportunities. Involvement in the selection of public officials and casting votes on critical issues are important manifestations of civic engagement. This participation, while it may offer opportunities for Asian Americans, also poses some significant challenges. In order to vote, adult residents must be United States citizens by birth or naturalization, but that is not enough. Citizens must also be registered to vote. This report provides the most detailed information on voter registration and Asian Americans in Massachusetts ever assembled. It includes analysis by the …

African Americans In Pwls: A Post-Caste Conundrum , Richard Sigwalt Nov 2004

African Americans In Pwls: A Post-Caste Conundrum , Richard Sigwalt

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

This paper proceeds from a historical study in progress of caste in the United States. That study will argue that the distinctive feature of slavery in the United States was that --unlike in Brazil or the Caribbean -servitude in the Anglophone mainland developed a caste ideal, ideologized as "race ". As with dalits in India, people identified as "black" in what became the United States an excluded hereditary caste destined ascriptively to the meanest labor, and excluded systematically and ideologically from the dominant ("white”) group. Slavery ended in the 1830s in most of the North, but because caste and slavery …

New Diversity Publishing Outlet: Adult Educators Overcome Exclusionary Policies , Keith B. Armstrong Nov 2004

New Diversity Publishing Outlet: Adult Educators Overcome Exclusionary Policies , Keith B. Armstrong

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

Research strongly supports the notion that publishing houses lack sufficient diversity in both high and middle-level staff members to allow for a diverse philosophical outlook and appreciation to fairly support underrepresented groups wishing to publish their research findings in multiculturalism, gender/sexual orientations studies, race and class. Resultantly, these biases confront both adult educators and other authors writing in the areas of social justice and diversity. This presentation will investigate the historical factors of exclusion in the publishing industry, and more specifically within university presses, to explain an initiative (praxis) launched to open access by way of creating a progressively new …
