Marion To Montgomery: A Twenty Year History Of Alabama State University, 1867-1887, Joseph Caver
Theses
Alabama State University is well known as a historically black university and for the involvement of its faculty and students during the civil rights movement. Less attention has been given to the school's remarkable origins, having begun as the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, founded by nine former slaves. These men are rightly considered the founders of Alabama State University, as they had the drive and perseverance to face the challenges posed by a racial and political culture bent on preventing the establishment of black schools and universities. It is thanks to the actions of the Marion Nine that …

Black Labor On A White Canal: West Indians In Panama, 1904-1980, Michael Conniff
Black Labor On A White Canal: West Indians In Panama, 1904-1980, Michael Conniff
Faculty Publications, History
As a crossroads for world commerce, Panama has always attracted outsiders. Traders, laborers, and adventurers swarmed to the Isthmus whenever new projects began. Between 1850 and 1950, as many as 200,000 West Indian blacks traveled to Panama, the most voluminous trans-Caribbean movement of people ever . The high tides of migration occurred in 1850-55 (the Panama Railroad), 1880-89 (the unsuccessful French canal), 1904-14 (the U.S. canal), and 1940-42 (the third locks project). West Indians saw Panama as a promised land with abundant jobs for the robust and easy money for the clever. They hoped that the journey to Panama would …

Ghagar Of Sett Guiranha: A Study Of A Gypsy Community In Egypt, Nabil Sobhi Hanna
Ghagar Of Sett Guiranha: A Study Of A Gypsy Community In Egypt, Nabil Sobhi Hanna
Faculty Books
This monograph is the result of a field study of one of the gypsy groups in Egypt known as the "Ghagar of Sett Guiran'ha'i" which lives within the boundaries of the Arab Republic of Egypt, in a rural area, close to main centers. Apart from giving a detailed description of this group, the study attempts to reveal the dynamics of integration of this group with the society around it through the examination of forms of social contact and avoidance; the expioration of similarities and contrasts between the gypsy group and the local community; and the investigation of some aspects of …

Black And White Perceptions Of Quality Of Life In Boston, Floyd J. Fowler Jr.
Black And White Perceptions Of Quality Of Life In Boston, Floyd J. Fowler Jr.
Center for Survey Research Publications
It is difficult, probably impossible, to compare objectively the seriousness of racial problems and tensions in Boston with those in other cities. However, there can be little doubt that there is a widespread perception that relationships between blacks and whites in Boston constitute a serious problem. Specifically, one image is that Boston is a community in which blacks are not welcome and in which they are treated with unusual hostility and abuse. Another image is that whites in Boston are unfairly maligned as racists and bigots.
In 1980, following several race-related incidents, The Boston Committee was formed. The purpose of …

The Project Palatisha Developmental Checklist (PPDC) is a preschool screening instrument that is used by many different tribal Head Start programs throughout the western United States. An item analysis was made on the Cognitive, Fine Motor, and Language subtests of the PPDC. The sample population consisted of 202 children ages 3 through 5 who were enrolled in Head Start programs. The Head Start programs who participated were located on the Hualapai, Hopi, Salt River Pima-Maricopa, Makah, Quileute, Chehalis, and Yakima Indian Reservations. One Mexican American Head Start program, Campesinos Unidos Inc., also participated in the study. The item analysis consisted …
