Steve and Anita Canfield helped the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. They helped send blankets, coats, and washing machines to Syrian refugees. They were assigned to Frankfurt to assess refugee camps, soup kitchens, warehouses, and immigrant communities. The couple visited refugee camps and soup kitchens all over Europe to determine what was needed most by refugees.
The Canfields established the Friendship Center in Rome. The center offers classes in Italian, English, Italian, and a Red Cross course. It also has a gospel choir, a popular activity for primarily African refugees. The LDS Church has plans to …

Coming to the Plains Oral Histories/ Llenando las Llanuras Historias Orales
Gladys Godínez was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In 1989 the Guatemalan Civil War and the desire to be together as a family drove the Godínez family to immigrate to the United States. Godínez lived in Inglewood, CA when she first immigrated to the USA. Godínez attended school and learned English. The large Latino population of Inglewood blunted the cultural shock. As part of the early wave of Latino immigrants to Lexington, NE, Godínez and her family faced cultural shock, language challenges, and discrimination. Reconstruction: A Concise History, Allen C. Guelzo
Reconstruction: A Concise History, Allen C. Guelzo
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Conflict shifted from the battlefield to the Capitol as Congress warred with President Andrew Johnson over just what to do with the South. Johnson's plan of Presidential Reconstruction, which was sympathetic to the former Confederacy and allowed repressive measures such as the "black codes," would ultimately lead to his impeachment and the institution of Radical Reconstruction. While Reconstruction saw the ratification of the 14th and 15th Amendments, expanding the rights and …

Curriculum Of Assimilation: Chemawa Indian Boarding School, Sarah Fischer, Emma Tomb
Undergraduate Research Celebration 2018
This project is a microhistory of the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon, the second federal Indian boarding school in the United States which is still running today. The school was designed with the intent of “civilizing” Native American children from reservations from all across the country, and assimilating them into “American” culture. There were several techniques that the school used, which had many severe consequences still present in the lives of alumni to this day. This project will be discussing things like punishments, job training, how cultural ties were cut from students and how alcoholism played a role in many …
