The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister
The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister
Elizabeth McAlister
This article examines how militarism has come to be one of the generative forces of the prayer practices of millions of Christians across the globe. To understand this process, I focus on the articulation between militarization and aggressive forms of prayer, especially the evangelical warfare prayer developed by North Americans since the 1980s. Against the backdrop of the rise in military spending and neoliberal economic policies, spiritual warfare evangelicals have taken on the project of defending the United States on the “spiritual” plane. Moreover, Osceola's cultural and political significance is placed within the critical context of settler-colonialism. Previous work on this Native leader has bypassed the crucial role of Whig and Democratic political operatives as well as the emergent mass media in the manufacture of a self-serving and highly skewed celebrity image. Thus an essential perspective has been missing from the historiography, a lacuna that is particularly addressed …

Authentic Identities, Andrew Pierce
Authentic Identities, Andrew Pierce
Andrew J. Pierce
Authenticity has played a central role in modern philosophical discourse, where it has often been interpreted individualistically. But concerns about authenticity also arise in relation to questions of group membership, and become especially pressing in the case of minority and/or disadvantaged groups. In this essay, I develop an alternative conception of authenticity based on the intersubjective relation of trust. Such a relational conception is better equipped to deal with both the authenticity of individuals, and that of groups, which, I ultimately argue, are two sides of the same coin.
