Reading is a skill necessary for social, academic, and economic achievement in our society. Research shows that minority children, such as American Indians, often struggle to become successful readers. It is necessary to understand causes that may contribute to the difficulties that American Indians have with effective acquisition of literacy skills. The Project Palatisha Developmental Checklist (PPDC) is a preschool screening instrument that is used by many different tribal Head Start programs throughout the western United States. An item analysis was made on the Cognitive, Fine Motor, and Language subtests of the PPDC. The sample population consisted of 202 children ages 3 through 5 who were enrolled in Head Start programs. The Head Start programs who participated were located on the Hualapai, Hopi, Salt River Pima-Maricopa, Makah, Quileute, Chehalis, and Yakima Indian Reservations. The purpose of this study was (1) to determine to what degree White Swan Native American high school seniors are turning away from the old customs and values; and (2) to determine Native American student attitudes toward Native American customs and values and toward the continuation of the reservation program.
