Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of the research done by Scott Lemley and Rod Pell on Isaac Mitchell’s life and genealogy, including his descendants, in order for Mitchell to be memorialized by the Huntington Police Department in 2013. The bulk of the collection consists of printed copies of email correspondence between Lemley and Bob Mitchell and Michelle Shypkoski (both descendants of Isaac Mitchell), printed genealogies, and two copies of the memoirs of William Clare Mitchell, a descendant who moved to Idaho. The collection consists of paper materials related to the Bokair family, especially Ellen Kathryn Bokair. Items include student newspapers, concert programs, and other memorabilia related to Huntington High School during the mid-1950s, as well as letters to Ellen Kathryn from Job’s Daughters and the American Business Women’s Association. Information on other members of the Bokair family is minimal and includes a wedding invitation, report cards, a ceremony pamphlet, letter, and a newspaper article. While the collection spans the years, 1916-1971, the bulk of items date from the 1950s and 1960s.

This collection consists of one scrapbook of clippings and photos and one folder of ephemera. The scrapbook includes extensive clippings and a limited number of photos of the 1937 flood in Huntington, West Virginia. Ephemera includes a copy of “The Belle of Barcelona: A Musical Comedy in Three Acts”, a 1929 program for said comedy at Huntington High School, and a ticket, pamphlet, clipping, and envelope about the 1976 American Freedom Train in Huntington.

These photographs include one photo of the Valentine and Newcomb building, an interior shot from 1936, group shots from company picnics and outings, and other shots including a Huntington High School Group Photo, c. 1940s and a photo of the Nineteenth Annual Banquet, National Retail Dry Goods Association, 1930.

This collection includes materials related to the life of Maxine Adkins Stewart beginning with her life at Huntington High School as a member of the class of 1928 and ending with her work at Vinson High School. Materials include her high school yearbooks, programs, and other ephemera from Huntington High School as well as materials from her fiftieth reunion, and ephemera materials from Vinson High School such as programs and ticket stubs.
