Hispanic Catholic Leadership: Key To The Future, Kenneth G. Davis, Andrew Hernández, Philip E. Lampe

This article assesses data from a 1999 survey of Hispanic adults concerning their experiences, needs, and deficits with respect to Hispanic-based leadership in their churches. Commissioned by the National Catholic Council on Hispanic Ministry (NCCHM), the study concluded that "because Hispanics are an increasingly important part of the Church in the United States (and society), Hispanic Catholic leadership development (especially among women, youth and young adults) requires an immediate and significant investment. Once formed, such leaders are very likely to contribute time, talent, and treasure to the Church."

This article examines the impact of increasing, mass urbanization in the Americas on the structures, functions and modalities of parish communities as a focal point of local churches. Addressing the contention of some pastoral practitioners and theoreticians that models of parish with their origins in rural settings have outlived their usefulness, this study begins with an analysis of the phenomenon of urbanization itself. Assessing such factors as population, public services, industrialization, cultural diversity, tolerance, territorial and social mobility and participation in democratic processes, the essay turns to consider the urban parish itself as the Church's response to the realities of …

Hispanic Theologians As Actors, Poets And Prophets Of Their Communities, Sixto J. García

The author proposes that while the Hispanic theologian must be an intimate participant and protagonist in his or her community, s/he is also called to maintain keep a necessary critical distance in relation to their living, active participation. Ultimately, theologians must ply their craft from within the lived religiosity of their communities. This means being a sensitive interpreter of the metaphors and symbols that communicate the community’s experience of the sacred. This role of poet-participant finds its best expression in the prophetic mission and identity of the theologian, who looks at his /her vulnerable, powerless, violence-stricken community through the surplus-giving …
