Partners In Preaching, David Peters Mar 1971

Partners In Preaching, David Peters

Bachelor of Divinity

So the Institute for Advanced Pastoral Studies focused its attention on the whole process of communication with the hope that it would illuminate the dilemma of preaching. Briefly stated in paraphrase, this is its conclusions: Since communication is a two-way (dialogical) process, in which both parties to the conversation play an integral part in effecting maximum communication, the sermon, as a means of communication, is the creation (partnership) of both the preacher and the parishoner. Therefore, the members of any congregation are asked to be active participants in the church's preaching.4 As such, they have certain responsibilities toward every preaching …

The Implications Of Dialogue For The Preacher, Luke Stephan Nov 1966

The Implications Of Dialogue For The Preacher, Luke Stephan

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper I will attempt to relate some of the insights which scholars have made concerning the principle of dialogue to the needs of the preacher. I will not attempt to make any exhaustive study of how the principle of dialogue can help the general relations between a pastor and his people, as in the area of pastoral counseling. Such a study could be very fruitful as a topic in itself. I will attempt to center all my attention on the pastor as preacher in the congregation.

An Investigation Of The Factors That Contribute To The Inspirational Quality In Christian Preaching, Orlen Walter Lapp Jun 1958

An Investigation Of The Factors That Contribute To The Inspirational Quality In Christian Preaching, Orlen Walter Lapp

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis concerns itself with the human element that contributes to the "inspirational” quality in Christian preaching. Everyone who has listened to Christian preaching has, on some occasion, felt the thrill of being inspired.” Although the experience of this ''inspirational” quality is universal, yet an exact definition as to its nature and component parts is cult. We are dealing with an intangible quality. Since it is impossible exactly to define the quality of “inspiration” in Christian preaching, a clearer understanding of its use in this thesis will be achieved by some affirmative and negative statements about it.

A Comparison Of The Frequency And Effectiveness Of Contemporary Preaching In The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod And Protestantism On Selected Social Issues As Represented In The Concordia Pulpit And The Pulpit Digest, Paul Philip Krueger Jun 1957

A Comparison Of The Frequency And Effectiveness Of Contemporary Preaching In The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod And Protestantism On Selected Social Issues As Represented In The Concordia Pulpit And The Pulpit Digest, Paul Philip Krueger

Bachelor of Divinity

It is not the purpose of this paper to establish the ideal frequency for directly dealing with social issues from the pulpit. The purpose is rather to compare objectively the instances of preaching on social themes found in the Concordia Pulpit and the Pulpit Digest and to allow the reader to determine the ideal frequency for himself. It may be helpful, nevertheless, to present another's opinion on the matter. One man may say it is never necessary to preach on social themes because, if the Gospel is preached, the Kingdom of God is established and the problems of society are …

The Gospel As Motivation For Santification In Sermons Of Spurgeon, George Rattelmuller Jun 1956

The Gospel As Motivation For Santification In Sermons Of Spurgeon, George Rattelmuller

Bachelor of Divinity

This topic has significance because of two important facts. The first is that it deals with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the greatest power which can be exerted in the lives of men. The second is that it deals with sanctification, a holy life. This is significant because it involves the whole purpose of God’s 1eaving the Christian to dwell on earth. The second cannot be accomplished without the first. With the first properly applied, there is no limit to the possibilities of the second.

The Importance And Means In Achieving A Balance In Appeals To Intellect And To Emotionin Preaching, Arnim Henry Polster Jun 1956

The Importance And Means In Achieving A Balance In Appeals To Intellect And To Emotionin Preaching, Arnim Henry Polster

Bachelor of Divinity

The study seeks to determine the relationship of intellect and emotion in preaching, to discover the relative importance of each, and to point out the factors involved in achieving a balance between appeals to intellect and appeals to emotion. Preaching tends in varying degrees to the extreme of dogmatic lecturing on the one hand, and on the other, to the extreme of the revivalistic tent-service. Therefore, answers to these questions are here sought: (1) What is the nature and importance of intellectual appeal in preaching? (2) What is the nature and importance of emotional appeal in preaching? (3) What is …

Achieving Homiletical Skills And Techiques From Jesus' Use Of The Parable, Ronald Starenko Jun 1955

Achieving Homiletical Skills And Techiques From Jesus' Use Of The Parable, Ronald Starenko

Bachelor of Divinity

For the Christian preacher Jesus Christ the Lord is both the model and the message. Our purpose is concerned with Him as the model. Observation reveals that modern preaching is desperately in need of such a model. This thesis may serve to stimulate interest and provide thoughts and hints concerning the preaching skill of the Savior that will lead to public preaching akin to His.

Characteristics Of The Pre-Reformation Age As They Are Reflected In Some Selected Preaching Of The Age Particulary In Germany, Henry H. Wilhelms Jun 1954

Characteristics Of The Pre-Reformation Age As They Are Reflected In Some Selected Preaching Of The Age Particulary In Germany, Henry H. Wilhelms

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of preaching, the full record of which remains to be written, will also prove to conform to the above assertion about history in general. Its course corresponds, however, to a masked degree with that of general and ecclesiastical history. The outward events with which church history deals are often reflected in preaching; it bears the impress of the various forms of thought known to us as philosophies; the prevailing heresies affect it, either in the way of a traction or repulsion.

English Preaching Before The Reformation- A Historical, Structural, And Critical Survey, With An Anthology Of Sermons 950-1550, Theodore John Kleinhans Jun 1950

English Preaching Before The Reformation- A Historical, Structural, And Critical Survey, With An Anthology Of Sermons 950-1550, Theodore John Kleinhans

Bachelor of Divinity

Whatever the reasons for the lack of interest, this thesis intends to examine, evaluate, and summarize the status of early English preaching. It is novel in that it combines a resume of preaching with the actual sermons themselves. Part one explains how the preacher went about making his sermon, and what, when, where, and how he preached; Part Two elaborates these generalizations with specific sermons or excerpts, the headnotes explaining and highlighting the major features of an individual selection.

The Concept Of Authority In The Persuasion Of Christ And St Paul, Robert A. Grunow May 1948

The Concept Of Authority In The Persuasion Of Christ And St Paul, Robert A. Grunow

Bachelor of Divinity

It will be our purpose in this paper to review some of the more prominent concepts of persuasive authority found in churches today. We will then endeavor to present the Biblical concept of persuasive authority, as it is found in the New Testament, especially in the Gospels and in the life and writings of St. Paul.

A Survey Of Representative Lutheran Preachers Concerning Technical Language In The Exposition Of Selected Doctrines, Theodore W. Schubkegel Jun 1945

A Survey Of Representative Lutheran Preachers Concerning Technical Language In The Exposition Of Selected Doctrines, Theodore W. Schubkegel

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to show that simple language is basic to all the excellencies of effective speech. Particular reference is made to the work of the preacher in the pulpit. The preacher must use language commonly understood, if he is to make himself understood, if he is to persuade, and if he is to move to action.

Habits And Practices Which Enhance Or Deter Effectiveness In The Pulpit, Earl Edwin Weis Jun 1945

Habits And Practices Which Enhance Or Deter Effectiveness In The Pulpit, Earl Edwin Weis

Bachelor of Divinity

"A good speaker or preacher is born, not made." "You either have effectiveness or you don’t." Such statements are often made by students who fail to recognize the importance of developing themselves in the art of speaking, or by pastors who feel that they have no time for improving themselves in that matter of delivery. But it must be remembered that there is room for a great deal of improvement in every speaker. When the thought to be expressed concerns the soul-winning, redemptive news of God, it places great responsibility and privilege on the speaker.

The Practical Application Of The Sermon, George Kurz Apr 1939

The Practical Application Of The Sermon, George Kurz

Bachelor of Divinity

Spurgeon once wrote that "where the application begins, there the sermon begins." Since the application is so important, it will be the primary purpose of this thesis to offer suggestions to the preacher on how he may improve and develop his ability in constructing the practical application of his sermon. The paper shall not be limited to mere suggestions, however; we shall discuss and make a study of the subject from all important angles (such as: the nature of the application, the necessity of the application, the purpose of the application, etc.). Writing on a subject of this type is …

The Use Of Illustrations In Christian Preaching, Armand Ulbrich Apr 1938

The Use Of Illustrations In Christian Preaching, Armand Ulbrich

Bachelor of Divinity

One of the devices which preachers throughout the centuries have employed to bring their message to the hearts of the people more clearly and forcefully is Illustration. Christ used illustrations. Paul used illustrations, Cbrysotom, Augustin, and Luther used illustrations, and so do the great preachers of today. We, too, in our preaching should use illustrations. We should use them as effectively as possible. It is the purpose of this paper to present the principals involved in the effective use of illustrations in Christian preaching and to show how these principles are to be applied.

The Weakness Of The Modern Pulpit, A Brief Examination Of The Trend And Principles Followed In The Preaching Of To-Day, B P. Hahn May 1930

The Weakness Of The Modern Pulpit, A Brief Examination Of The Trend And Principles Followed In The Preaching Of To-Day, B P. Hahn

Bachelor of Divinity

In other words, then, it is in the pulpit of today, occupied by the preachers whose office corresponds very closely to that of the prophets and priests in the Old Testament, where we shall find the chief reason why the church is apparently failing in its world mission to-day. Viewing the pulpit in this light men have produced much literature in the attempt to better and advance the pulpit; ma~ and varied are the weaknesses that have been pointed out by them.
