Wild Bill Goes To Washington : A Reassessment Of The Senate Career Of North Dakota's William Langer, Eric P. Bergeson
Theses and Dissertations
William Langer is firmly established as a legend in North Dakota history. The legend began during his controversial terms as attorney general (1916-1920) and governor (1932-1934 and 1936-1938). A maverick in the United States Senate after his election to the upper chamber in 1940, admirers saw him as a civil libertarian and a defender of the "common man." The loyalty and devotion of his constituents increased over the years because of his willingness to do favors for them and because of his considerable campaign skills. However, a study of his papers, the Congressional Record, and newspaper and magazine articles reveals …

Jfk: The Education Of A President, Nigel Hamilton
Jfk: The Education Of A President, Nigel Hamilton
New England Journal of Public Policy
What goes into the making of a president? To what extent are the mind and character of the American commander in chief determined by his background, his family — and his education? This article represents a transcript of two lectures Nigel Hamilton presented in the spring and fall of 1989 at the Massachusetts State Archives. They were derived from the preliminary sketches for the author's full-scale biography of John F. Kennedy, to be published by Houghton Mifflin in 1992 on the anniversary of the birth of the thirty-fifth president.
The Vision Thing, Shaun O'Connell
The Vision Thing, Shaun O'Connell
New England Journal of Public Policy
In "The Vision Thing," Shaun O'Connell reviews a number of books whose subject matter is not merely the presidential election of 1988, but the impact of image politics in the age of the thirty-second sound bite. He quotes Neil Postman in Amusing Ourselves to Death: "Just as the television commercial empties itself of authentic product information so that it can do its psychological work of [pseudotherapy], image politics empties itself of authentic political sustenance for the same reason."
The works discussed in this article include: All by Myself: The Unmaking of a Presidential Campaign, by Christine M. Black …
Who Was That Woman I Didn't See You With Last Night?, Norman W. Merrill
Who Was That Woman I Didn't See You With Last Night?, Norman W. Merrill
New England Journal of Public Policy
The 1988 presidential campaign elicited numerous complaints about negative campaigning. But compared to the vicious rhetoric popular at the birth of the republic the rhetoric of the latest campaign was quite mild. Invective rhetoric was employed by the Founding Fathers, men like John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and James Callender. The partisan press of the time contributed greatly to the harsh tone of politics. All participants felt free to make acerbic remarks directed at the man rather than the issue, a tradition that continued throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Many of the charges made by American politicians were …
German Foreign Policy & Diplomacy 1890-1906, Lee Button
German Foreign Policy & Diplomacy 1890-1906, Lee Button
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
From 1871 to 1914, Germany experienced its first taste of world power and the failure of controlling and retaining that power. German power after 1871 had sought only a dominance of continental politics and a maintenance of a status quo in Europe favorable to Germany. Following 1890, however, the German course deviated to include a vision of world power. German foreign policy until 1890 was based on two things: hegemonic control of the heart of Europe and the force of will of one man, Otto von Bismarck. Yet despite relative control of the European situation and a cautious and able …

The Enigmatic Founder: Liberalism, Republicanism And The Thought Of James Madison, John S. Witherow
The Enigmatic Founder: Liberalism, Republicanism And The Thought Of James Madison, John S. Witherow
Dissertations and Theses
In the twentieth century the debate over the ideological origins of the founding period and early republic has resulted in a polarization of historical interpretations. Recently, the conflict has centered on historians who use either the liberal or classical republican paradigms to explain these eras. Scholars of the founding period have argued for the dominance of one political ideology or the other in the thought of important figures of this time. Unfortunately, this struggle has led to a narrow interpretation of arguably the greatest thinker in American History, James Madison. To the contrary, I hold Madison's thought was influenced by …

Notes On The Economic Theories Of Socialism, Gerry O'Quigley
Notes On The Economic Theories Of Socialism, Gerry O'Quigley
Materials
Claims made about economic theory are always embedded in some political context. Members of socialist parties are involved in a fundamental reappraisal of socialism itself. Many have already concluded that socialism is to be written off. Others reject this by pointing out that although 'Marxism-Leninism' and 'Social Democracy' have undoubtedly failed, socialism has never been tried. But this is far too complacent. Socialism as an ideal can hardly be abstracted from every attempt that was ever made to implement it. If we automatically absolve the socialist ideal from any responsibility for its deformations in practice, we will never even pose …
