Andrew Johnson And The Patronage, James Lewis Baumgardner Dec 1968

Andrew Johnson And The Patronage, James Lewis Baumgardner

Doctoral Dissertations

The Constitution bestows upon the president the right to make appointments "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate" to federal position at home and abroad. Over the passage of time, through free use of this power and the implied power of removal, the several chief executives constructed a vast patronage system, of which one primary goal was to reward the party faithful for their services. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine how well Andrew Johnson, the unexpected successor of Abraham Lincoln, used the seemingly powerful patronage weapon and the reasons why he used it as …

The Truman Election: Was 1968 A Repeat?, Cloene Biggs Oct 1968

The Truman Election: Was 1968 A Repeat?, Cloene Biggs

History Class Publications

As election day in 1948 drew nearer, political pollsters, pros and amateurs united in predicting victory for Thomas E. Dewey. Only underdog candidate President Truman and, as it turned out, the American electorate disagreed with this consensus.

At the end of 1947 Truman was considered certain for renomination by his party, and the Gallup Poll showed that he would easily defeat either of the two leading Republicans--Governor Dewey and Senator Taft. A get-tough policy with Russia had pushed up his popularity--the Marshall Plan, his advocacy of government action to curb high prices, his confrontation with labor leader John L. Lewis …

The Ku Klux Klan In Grand Forks, William Lathrop Harwood Aug 1968

The Ku Klux Klan In Grand Forks, William Lathrop Harwood

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

During the 1920's the Ku Klux Klan powerfully influenced all levels of government in the United States. For example, its strength helped to elect governors and U.S. Senators in eight states. As a result of Klan efforts, Oregon voters in 1923 approved a measure prohibiting parochial schools from teaching the first eight grades, and Portland Klan candidates won seats on the city commission in the same year.

This thesis is a case study of the Klan's political activities in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the trading center of the fertile wheatlands of the northern Red River Valley. Here, the local Klan …

Student Power, Rowan Cahill

Rowan Cahill

Contemporary account by a participant-observer of the upsurge in 1968 of student activism on Australian university campuses, with particular emphasis on the concepts of 'student power' and 'democratisation'. The 1966 Republican Campaign In North Dakota, Joseph Charles Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

The 1966 Republican Campaign in North Dakota discusses the efforts of the Party from May, 1965 through November, 1966. The pre-convention period illustrates the effort of the North Dakota Republicans to rebuild their organization after the 1964 defeat. Analysis of this effort is made with regard to finances, organization, and research.

The study then discusses the 1966 state convention, the rise of youth in the Party organization, background and insight into all the races, and a complete tabulation of all ballots. Special emphasis is placed on the problem of the John Birch Society and on how that problem was resolved …

Ua37/2 Carl Chelf - Henry Cherry Educator-Politician, Carl Chelf

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

This is a study of the role of polities in education-more specifically, the role of politics in the founding and development of a state college. It is not an exposé or an inside story of the sensational, "now it can ba toldB type. It is simply an analysis arid an attempted explanation of the interactions of the various elements in the policy-making process--public opinion, interest groups, individuals, legislators--in the founding and growth of a state college. The study will trace the evolution of an idea or public interest into public policy. This transformation of a public interest through periods of …

Soviet-U.S. Relations 1917-1957, As Reflected In Soviet Anti-American Graphic Propaganda, William Frederick Alsop Jr.

Graduate Thesis Collection

The present study is an attempt to bring into focus one of the many bases of party power over Soviet citizens. It is no great revelation that the Soviet government has long indulged in anti-American propanda, but the continuity, elaboratness and virulence of ths "crusade of hatred" demands further study. It is essential that such study be undertaken parallel with an appraisal of Soviet-American relations since 1917.

In outlining the chronological development of anti-American libel campaign, some space will be devoted to methodology, technology and apparent purposes of the Soviet propagandists. Space limitations preclude an elaborate study of Soviet propaganda …

A Study Of Political And Sectional Voting Alignments In The United States Senate, 1921-1929, Patrick Gene O'Brien Jan 1968

A Study Of Political And Sectional Voting Alignments In The United States Senate, 1921-1929, Patrick Gene O'Brien

Wayne State University Dissertations

Several common and casual assertions about "twenties" politics should come under critical reanalysis, including traditional descriptions of the extent and character of party division. The usual historical generalization is that, although conservativism was the predominant political attitude, both parties were fragmented by sectional and ideological struggles. As a con sequence there was a breakdown in the party system. This dissertation tests this conclusion through an examination of voting patterns in the United States Senate from the 67th through the 70th Congress (1921-29), Virtually every political history of the era touches upon Senate voting alignments, but there is no extant study …

An Examination Of The Attitudes And Policies Of Andrew Jackson Concerning The American Indian, Harlan Hugh Hague Jan 1968

An Examination Of The Attitudes And Policies Of Andrew Jackson Concerning The American Indian, Harlan Hugh Hague

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study will focus on the development of Andrew Jackson's attitude toward the American Indian and the effect of these attitudes on the shaping of official United states policy toward the Indians.

Jackson was born and raised on the frontier. There his prejudices were acquired and his personality was formed. Chapter I deals with Jackson's early life as a young frontiersman, politician and Indian-fighter. His championing of the rights of the westerner, his attitudes toward the Indian and his love for the martial spirit led him into the Tennessee militia and the United States Army during the Indian wars. The …

An Analysis Of The Governorship Of Huey Long, N. G. Dalrymple Jan 1968

An Analysis Of The Governorship Of Huey Long, N. G. Dalrymple

OBU Graduate Theses

Huey Pierce Long was one of the most flamboyant . and controversial political leaders of the early twentieth century. Elected Governor of Louisiana in 1928 on the platform "Every Man a King," Long soon became nationally known for his erratic and picturesque behavior as "the Kingfish."

The New York Times heralded the election of Huey Long as Governor of the Pelican State as the appearance of "a worthy competitor in the field of light political farce." Later, many persons realized. that the statement was not entirely accurate. What Louisiana received in Huey Long was highly political, but it was far …

The Soviet System And The Historian: E.V. Tarle (1875-1955) As A Case Study, Sidney Robert Sherter Jan 1968

The Soviet System And The Historian: E.V. Tarle (1875-1955) As A Case Study, Sidney Robert Sherter

Wayne State University Dissertations

Ever since the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Soviet leaders have viewed the field of history as the most political of the social sciences. Soviet historiography, as a result, has been conditioned by political events; and Marxist-Leninist ideology, also affected by politics, has been used as its philosophical justification.

The flexibility of Soviet ideology has created an almost insurmountable obstacle for the historian. The ra tionale behind historical scholarship has been and still is utility, with the historian being used as a tool in support of ideological or political platforms proposed by the Party. As an employee of the state, the …
