Todas Nosotras, Sutherland Jaramillo

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

Through the consideration of the figure of La Llorona in poetic narratives, these poems, which are selections from a self-produced collection of poetry in my Master’s Thesis "La Llorona in Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections on Writing and Memory," explore themes of identity, place, and memory, and offer a reflection on the role of women as storytellers and the possibility of reimagining the lore to tell the story of both La Llorona’s haunting liminality and empowerment.

El Secreto Del Rio Hondo, Corilia Ortega

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

As Northern New Mexicans we share watersheds, mountain ranges, wild growing remedios, the sun's setting path, and strong querencia. Yet, there are innumerable differet and significant ways in which our hearts beat for this land, water, and sky. This is querencia in the Fall season, in relation to our river. It is exactly what I observe today and love about time and place in Northern NM. It may be similar to many Nortenos, but not easily replicated.

Aztlán Del Sol, Marcus Zúñiga May 2021

Aztlán Del Sol, Marcus Zúñiga

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

An artistic writing developed from the themes and concepts of an of art installation made by a visual artist of Mexican-American descent from New Mexico. The work references the relationship of Aztec mythology to the American Southwest, art theoretical discourse in object oriented ontology and aesthetics, and key ideas in astronomy. Additionally interwoven is an expanded sense for interpreting ancestry and history under the constructs of multicultural conceptions of time, specifically cultures with notable spiritual rituals of Sun worship and observation.

Nothing Above, Everything Below: Zumbadores De La Sierra Jémez, Enrique R. Lamadrid May 2021

Nothing Above, Everything Below: Zumbadores De La Sierra Jémez, Enrique R. Lamadrid

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

"Nothing Above, Everything Below" is a "species poem" dedicated to the two kinds of "zoomers" that frequented Rudolfo Anaya's casita in Jémez Springs in the summertime. He was deeply inspired by the Jémez mountains, its peoples and creatures. Hummingbirds are so fascinating to all, that they easily become commonplace. Clichés when writing about them are difficult to overcome. This is the story of the two zumbadores (Sp.) that migrate to breed in northern boreal forests. They do not hum, but rather zoom between cultures, between life and death. This memorial tribute honors Anaya and his great generosity. He made his …

White On The Outside | Brown On The Inside, Damon R. Carbajal

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

This poem is one of a trio of poems published in this volume titled, “at the interSEXtion of being GAY and CHICANX: Un Trío de Poemas,” that dive into what it means growing up as a gay, Chicanx light-skinned in the current times post the moviemento and through the strides of the queer liberation movement. The poems explore many facets of living at this intersection including, but not limited to, toxic masculinities, queerphobia, mental health, sexual assault, pride, etc. The poems also explore the notion of what it means to be mestiza as Mexicano and White and how this further …

La Llorona In Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections On Writing And Memory, Sutherland Jaramillo Apr 2020

La Llorona In Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections On Writing And Memory, Sutherland Jaramillo

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This paper focuses on poetic narratives that consider the folklore figure of La Llorona. I argue that contemporary nuevomexicana poets are responding to regional narratives as a way of challenging traditional structures of the lore and female archetypes to reclaim the identity and voice of the figure of La Llorona. Through literature that considers structure and archetype of the lore, Chicana feminist theory, and spectral theory, this essay surveys a selection of poems: “La Llorona Speaks” (2018) by Mercedez Holtry, “Una Carta de Amor de la Llorona” (2011) by Jessica Helen Lopez and “La Llorona” (2018) by Joanna Vidaurre-Trujillo. Through …

Aph(L)Orisms (Maximus In Minimis), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2008

Aph(L)Orisms (Maximus In Minimis), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This collection of “aphlorisms” resulted from a search in my old manuscripts. At that time I was preoccupied everyday with noting down in my little notebook various interesting-to-me expressions that I heard or that came to my mind. Etymologically, aphorism + floral = aph(L)orism, which is a short reflection written on a floral design, or a short poetry accompanied by an artistic background. They are colorful contemplations. Maximus in minimis (Lat.) means very much in very little [max in min], or condensed thought, or ideating essence. They are actually maxims, adages, sayings mostly in one line (uni-stich) with a title, …

Laws Of Internal Composition. Poems With… Problems!, Florentin Smarandache Jan 1993

Laws Of Internal Composition. Poems With… Problems!, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

For me, Florentin Smarandache’s appearance in the Romanian literature – I tell this from the beginning and with all my conviction –, is worth a real event. […] Not his character’s exoticism is interesting, nor his fabulous and dangerous “diligence,” but the excellent value of his unusual struggle-in-unknown that is becoming an Oeuvre.

( Gheorghe Tomozei )

Volume translated by the author to English from his 1982 Romanian book "Legi de Compozitie interna. Poeme cu... Probleme!"

Total Mobilization, William Bingham Jun 1962

Total Mobilization, William Bingham

English Language and Literature ETDs

This literary treatment develops the condition of suspended animation which reaches its completion in the Jamesian character in "The Ambassadors" who makes mock-sinister references to a 'product' which he never names. Literature with all its claptrap about the 'vital' issues of love and adventure on the battlefield and in the drawing-room--this ridiculous cud chewed over and over makes me gag. Even the current prattle about 'existence' is an evasion, perhaps the supreme evasion...

The success of an 'embattled style' lies in the poet's ability to sustain generalisation without abstracting it from living experience. A limit of individuation must be transcended …

Assifidity Days And Other Poems, Robert E. Rhodes Feb 1958

Assifidity Days And Other Poems, Robert E. Rhodes

English Language and Literature ETDs

I now believe at this end of this writing that there are three stages through which the poet and his poetry move in the accomplishment of any poem; stages in relation to this poet only, in development of these poems. Since we can agree that poetry is a highly personal statement (a dangerous thing in itself today), it is with poetry as personal statement that I would like to begin.

Expressions Of Nationalism In The Poetry Of The Texas Republic, Edgar Warren Smith Jr. May 1950

Expressions Of Nationalism In The Poetry Of The Texas Republic, Edgar Warren Smith Jr.

English Language and Literature ETDs

It will be the primary purpose of this thesis to prove that the thinking and writing, especially the writing of poetry, during the period of the Texas Republic express a nationalism which stems from the separate, national feeling in which Texans had after they declared their independence from Mexico. In order to carry through this research the writer intends to study the poetry for the period 1836 to 1845 in so far as it is available for the study.

The writer believes that the Republicans felt their independence, their national separateness from any other nation, their position among the nations …

Modern Women Poets Of Brazil, Marie Pope Wallis Jun 1947

Modern Women Poets Of Brazil, Marie Pope Wallis

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study was written to introduce the poetry of Brazil's leading women poets to the English-speaking world. Brazilian literature itself is as little known as the Portuguese language in which it is written. Brazilian poetry as a whole has not been widely evaluated. The poetry of Brazilian women, in particular, is practically unknown to the Brazilian as well as to the English-speaking public.

There were four criteria for the selection of these particular five living women poets. They were chosen on the basis of volume of published works. Several poetesses of promise had to be omitted because their publications were …

Sara Teasdale: Her Life And Work, Virginia Mcknight Jun 1937

Sara Teasdale: Her Life And Work, Virginia Mcknight

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study of Sara Teasdale was made not only in an attempt to learn more about her as a woman and as a poet but try to relate the two, to explain why she wrote the type of poetry which she did, why some of her poems express such a joyous love of life and others such as disillusionment. The latter expression is more understandable when the facts of her life are known. The studies of her imagery and stanzaic forms aid in forming an opinion of her ability as a poet and also tend to characterize her as a …
