New Tricks

Another great issue of New Tricks has been released thanks to the hard work of my fellow students, Rachel Bruntz, Brad Hamer, Robert Johnson, Luke Reiner, Brittni Shoup-Owens, and Keegan Struble. The team worked tirelessly to revamp the New Tricks website and in advertising, editing, and putting it together into something we are all proud of.

The 2017 Literary Stunt Dogs extends our deepest gratitude to Dr. John Nelson for his direction and contributions to the magazine, and to DSU's Sigma Tau Delta chapter and the English Club for their help sponsoring and funding the production. Special thanks to Chris …

New Tricks

25 years ago, a group of students began the Literary Stunt Dogs, a club for students who wanted to establish a way to share poems, short stories, art pieces, and photography made by the individuals in the community of Dakota State University. Then, in spring of 1992, the first issue of New Tricks was published.

Today, the 2016 Literary Stunt Dogs are proud to bring you yet another engaging and entertaining issue filled with works created by students, faculty, staff, and other DSU members. In addition to the print copy, we are now offering our works online as well.

"As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul." Hermes Trismegistus

I am but a humbly painted vessel of the Almighty Artist, here to share in this uniquely significant piece of the great mural. They say that art imitates life and that through the creation of art we become one with the divine painter of the universe. That is why the calling of the artist is the most noble of pursuits, for the artist is the truest reflection of the source of things. Yet art is not finite and cannot be nailed down. Like the …

New Tricks

It is an exclusive secret if one knows a muse and it is an even more exclusive ability if said person is able to channel her beauty. For most people, seducing a muse is no easy task. It takes a special kind of creative mind to attract the personification of art. Frequently, the rigorous process of invoking one of the muses often involves a set of rituals that resemble courtship displays. Muses demand undying attention and affection from their vessel before they will allow themselves to flow through a mortal instrument and onto a medium of art. In those rare …

Welcome to the latest issue of New Tricks, a literary magazine published by the DSU chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an international honor society for English students. Literary magazines, showcasing talents of DSU students and faculty, have been published intermittently by DSU organizations. In 1995 Sigma Tau Delta chose the magazine as its major project, along with several activities emphasizing literary appreciation. This project has been made possible through the efforts of several already very busy people. We would like to thank all the students and faculty who submitted their works. We extend special thanks to James Swanson and …

The magazine is almost finished- forged in the fiery loins of Beadle Hall (erect in 1886). The Editor (Hephaestus) eyes me anxiously. He's waiting for the foreword and is acutely aware of my procrastinating nature. The clock, uncaring of my plight, ticks on.

New Tricks (The Official Magazine of the Literary Stunt Dogs) has risen from the ashes of the Dakotah Poesy. The Poesy was Dakota State's literary magazine from 1986 to 1990. Sadly, the Poesy died of natural causes and DSU became a university without a literary magazine. Not for long. For in mid-September a young writer (Brian Bargmann) …
