Letter: A Developing Schism In Flood Geology, Marcus R. Ross
Letter: A Developing Schism In Flood Geology, Marcus R. Ross
Marcus R. Ross
First paragraph: Froede and Akridge are correct to recognize that creation geology includes two widely divergent groups seeking to reconstruct Earth history within a Biblical framework. Such has been the case throughout the history of creationism, going back to disagreements between Harold Clark and George McCready Price over the reality (or not) of the geologic column. With the increased number of geologically trained young-Earth creationists, discussions over these issues have become more common.

The important identity of a responsible media is playing an unbiased role in reporting a matter without giving unnecessary hype to attract the attention of the gullible public with the object of making money and money only. After reporting properly the media can educate the public to form their own opinion in the matters of public interest. Throughout the centuries, the world has never existed without information and communication, hence the inexhaustible essence of mass media. The government has the power to either make or reject whatever that will exist within its environment. It also determines how free the mass media …

Providing technical know-how to non-technical researchers to promote and preserve their collections online is an emerging niche librarians are filling. Digital humanities partners are sometimes external to the library’s institution. DePaul University Library assisted researchers at the National University of Ireland, Galway in preserving their catalogue of Vincentian documents by migrating metadata from an unstable server to Omeka.net, a hosted web publishing platform designed for cultural institutions. The library proposed Omeka.net after considering the collection’s requirements, the technical abilities of the researchers and their budget. The library contributed their expertise of metadata by analyzing, re-encoding, and cross-walking metadata to Dublin …
Towards Respecting Indigenous Rights In Development Policy: The Case Of A Community-Based Forest Management Project In Panama, Benjamin Goodman
Towards Respecting Indigenous Rights In Development Policy: The Case Of A Community-Based Forest Management Project In Panama, Benjamin Goodman

As Latin American countries reach new heights of development, perched on the shoulders of an increasingly globalized economy, their local indigenous communities continue to be the most marginalized and impoverished people in the world. Sustainable development initiatives present themselves as a way to contribute to global economic development, while at the same time, respecting the livelihoods of rural peoples and preserving natural resources for future generations. However, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources continues to threaten the livelihoods and identities of many rural indigenous communities. As the economic, legal and political marginalization of indigenous peoples persists, the inevitable result of these …
Balance Or Trade-Off? Online Security Technologies And Fundamental Rights, Mireille Hildebrandt
Balance Or Trade-Off? Online Security Technologies And Fundamental Rights, Mireille Hildebrandt
Mireille Hildebrandt
In this contribution I argue that the image of the balance is often used to defend the idea of a trade-off. To understand the drawbacks of this line of thought I will explore the relationship between online security technologies and fundamental rights, notably privacy, non-discrimination, freedom of speech and due process. After discriminating between three types of online security technologies I will trace the reconfiguration of the notion of privacy in the era of smart environments. This will lead to an inquiry into the metaphor of the scale, building on the triple test regarding the justification of the limitation of …
Overtone Analysis Of A Holtkamp Organ Using Fourier Methods, Mario Harper, David Berg
Overtone Analysis Of A Holtkamp Organ Using Fourier Methods, Mario Harper, David Berg
Mario Yuuji Harper
This research is a study of the similarities and differences of the four sound families (principal, flute, reed, and string) of the organ, specifically, we used the organ located in the Kent Hall at USU. This experiment focuses on the mechanics of the organ, turning sound into mathematical signals, and performing Fourier analysis using computer methods. We conclude that a certain family of pipes (flute pipe family) had the most similarities to the “natural” series while the reed family was the most variant. We show the steps taken in our experiment and attempt to explain the variance and correlation of …

The Rise Of Science In Japan: 日本科学発展と原因, Mario Harper
Mario Yuuji Harper
Rethinking Classroom Participation, Rita Gardiner
Rethinking Classroom Participation, Rita Gardiner
Rita A Gardiner
Within the classroom, feelings of alienation can adversely affect students’ ability to speak, and thus serve to reproduce social inequities. This is especially the case with some first year students who may not have had many opportunities to speak, as well as students from different cultures where talking in class may not be the norm. To help mitigate power imbalances, it is necessary to develop a diversity of teaching practices and approaches to learning to ensure that each student feels that her class participation counts. In this workshop, I want to consider ways in which it is possible to encourage …
Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi
Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi
Fathi Habashi
Contact with Cuban scientists was established in 1986 when two researchers from Centro de Investigaciones para Industria Minero Metalurgica in Havana visited Laval University to get acquainted with research activities in the area of extractive metallurgy. This was followed in early 1987 by two more researchers from the same centre. Invitations were then received in late 1987, 1989, and 2008 to visit the nickel refineries in Cuba and to hold seminars at the University of Havana. The present report outlines these activities.
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather
Christopher N. Roman
Marine archaeology beyond the capabilities of scuba divers is a technologically enabled field. The tool suite includes ship-based systems such as towed side-scan sonars and remotely operated vehicles, and more recently free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Each of these platforms has various imaging and mapping capabilities appropriate for specific scales and tasks. Broadly speaking, AUVs are becoming effective tools for locating, identifying, and surveying archaeological sites. This paper discusses the role of AUVs in this suite of tools, outlines some specific design criteria necessary to maximize their utility in the field, and presents directions for future developments. Results are presented …

Introduction To The Value Of Personal Data, Mireille Hildebrandt, Kieron O'Hara, Michael Waidner
Mireille Hildebrandt
This Chapter provides an introduction to and overview of the 2013 Yearbook of the Digital Enlightenment Forum, on the subject of the value of personal data. It discusses why we should care about the current monetization of our personal data and raises the issue of whether and, if so, how user-centric personal data ecosystems help to rebalance power asymmetries between individual citizens and large Personal Data Processing Systems.
