Images Of Nursing From West Michigan: A Photo Essay, Aldina Mahmutovic

The image of nursing is diverse and complex, with public perceptions influenced by traditional imagery and negative stereotypes. Few recent studies consider how nurses view their professional image. My study aimed to uncover how West Michigan nurses perceive the image of nursing. Approval was given by the local Sigma chapter (Kappa Epsilon at Large), to recruit participants from members, and by Grand Valley's IRB. Via an online REDCap survey, participants submitted an original photo and written narrative. Submissions were searched for underlying patterns using thematic analysis. And This: Is the Journey to the Center of Freedom is a personal allegory, navigating the collections of stories, events, and feelings that are relevant in my life. This series is a contemporary interpretation of post-mortem photography, depicting the relationship between the physical and metaphysical remnants of life. The scenes are absent of a resident, showing only what remains, while the fabric portraits represent the ethereal vestige, the intangible memory friends and family hold on to. The corresponding paper reviews my photographic journey and details my processes necessary to create this body of work. Death is not always an easy subject to confront; with this project, I ask viewers to examine their own mortality and accept death’s inevitability.

This project explores the idea of “Doing Gender,” a term coined by sociologists Candace West and Don Zimmerman. The photographic series is comprised of diptychs in which I photographed people performing a feminine gender performance, as well as a masculine one. By exploring gender in this way and capturing it on camera, I have illustrated ways in which gender is a learned performance. This paper details the methods used to create this project, as well as its intentions as an analysis of gender performance.
