The Troodos Hunting Expedition, Published From The Ms Of E. Croker, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The Troodos Hunting Expedition, Published From The Ms Of E. Croker, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The “Troodos Hunting Expedition” came to light recently, as a result of a message received by Mr John Elverson who was doing a research on his great grandfather Edward William Dunlo Croker (14 September 1849 – 10 May 1893). Edward, born at Merrion Square North, Dublin, was the fourth son of Captain Edward Croker of Ballynagarde, county Limerick and his wife Lady Georgiana Ellen Monck ....The family still possesses, inter alia, two documents written by him, that shed some light on a period of his life with focus on Cyprus: First, an account of an expedition that he made to …

Généticisation Et Responsabilité: Les Habits Neufs De La Gouvernance Néolibérale (Uncorrected Proofs), Antoinette Rouvroy
Antoinette Rouvroy

On The Ethics Of Capitalism, Stanislaw Cichocki, Boguslawa Lewandowska
On The Ethics Of Capitalism, Stanislaw Cichocki, Boguslawa Lewandowska
Bogusława Lewandowska
The aim of the paper is to present some reflections on the ethics of capitalism – the economic, social and political system which dominates today’s world and is seen by many as the only proper system. However there existed many critics (Saint-Simon, Simonde de Sismondi, Marks) of this system who called it inhuman, unjust, exploitive etc. and who proposed alternatives for capitalism. These were then challenged by advocates of capitalism (Hayek, Mises, Berger). They criticized alternatives of capitalism and tried to prove that freedom, individualism, initiative, economic growth and wealth can be best achieved in capitalism. They admitted that capitalism …

The Turn To Aesthetics: An Interdisciplinary Exchange Of Ideas In Applied And Philosophical Aesthetics, Clive A. Palmer
Clive Palmer
Chapters and proceedings from an international conference on Aesthetics held at Liverpool Hope University 5th–8th June 2007. This was a wide-ranging inter-disciplinary conference which encouraged submissions from three general strands of study including; those subjects which have enjoyed a substantial history of involvement in the field such as Theology and Philosophy, those relatively new to the study such as Sports Studies and Management, and those which focus upon such applied dimensions as the Arts and Education. The overall aim of the conference was to learn from interdisciplinary debate and to encourage an exchange of ideas on research of the highest …

Technology And The Romanian Revolution: Performative Contradiction In The Nation-State, Jolan Bogdan
Jolan Bogdan
This article explores the link between Enframing (Ge-stell) in Martin Heidegger's critique of technology, and Judith Butler's recent work on performative contradiction. The discussion includes a reflection on Baruch de Spinoza's Political Treaties, linking each to the specific political example of the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

Haim Guri And Rabbi David Buzaglo: A Theo-Political Meeting Place Of Zionist Sabra Poetry And Jewish Liturgy, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר
Haim Guri’s poem Bab el Wad is arguably one of the most famous pieces of modern Zionist poetry ever created, and after being set to music, became one of Israel’s most recognizable songs. R. David Buzaglo composed the words to his piyyut “Binu Hamordim” to Shmuel Pershko’s melody to Bab el Wad. The relationship between these two works has been previously examined in the articles by Meir Buzaglo and Shimon Biton. These two scholars argue that in borrowing the melody, R. David Buzaglo was offering a critique of the Israeli ethos of commemoration encouraged by Guri, particularly with respect to …

Tell Me What Your Questions Are And I Will Tell You Who You Are: Some Reflections On The 'Proposed Taxonomy For A Twenty-First-Century Theology Of Reform Zionism' By S. M. Davids, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר
In the following pages I examine the article" A Proposed Taxonomy for a Twenty-First Century Theology of Reform Zionism" by Stanley M. Davids and argue that the "Taxonomy" in question is in fact a political theology. In that sense it is a signifies a change in the way Reform Zionism understood itself juxtapose the relations between Church and State at least in the context of the State of Israel.

The Platonic Legend [In Greek], Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The Platonic Legend [In Greek], Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
This is the first study ever on the history of modern Platonic exegesis in Greek, and would hopefully introduce the “Rezeptionsgechichte” discipline into Greek academia. What I am trying to prove is a simple, albeit controversial thesis, namely that the existence of so many conflicting accounts about Plato’s philosophy proves that George Grote’s argument put forward in the 1860s (in a nutshell, that Plato had no distinct philosophical system to establish apart from a consistent aim running through the dialogues, that of expounding a philosophical method -- not a doctrine), is still compellingly legitimate. The existence of many “Platonisms” (in …

Réinventer L'Art D'Oublier Et De Se Faire Oublier Dans La Société De L'Information?, Antoinette Rouvroy
Antoinette Rouvroy
Polycentric Governance Of Normative Technologies: Democratic And Constitutional Issues / Gouvernance Polycentrique Des Technologies Normatives: Enjeux Démocratiques Et Constitutionnels., Antoinette Rouvroy
Antoinette Rouvroy
English abstract: This personal project, funded by the FNRS, addresses the relationships between Law and the myriad of norms generated by non-state actors involved in the governance of the Information Society. A first question is about both the specificities, if any, of the legal norms, or of the Law, in the regulatory landscape of the Information Society, and the role that the law might have in the assessment and guarantee of the legitimacy of 'non-state norms'. Assuming that a basic condition of the legitimacy of norms, whatever their kinds, would reside in the possibility that individuals have to contest them, …
The Organismic State Against Itself: Schelling, Hegel And The Life Of Right, Joshua D. Lambier
The Organismic State Against Itself: Schelling, Hegel And The Life Of Right, Joshua D. Lambier
Joshua D Lambier
Focusing on the political thought of Schelling and Hegel – beginning with the early texts (1796–1802), then moving briefly to Hegel’s well known Philosophy of Right (1821) – this essay revisits the Romantic-Idealist theory of the organic state by returning to its genesis in the turbulent political, cultural and scientific debates of the post-Revolutionary period. Given the controversial nature of its historical (mis)appropriations, the organic idea of the state has become synonymous with totality and closure. This essay argues, however, that the contemporary rejection of organicism relies on narrow interpretations of Romantic and Idealist notions of organic life, interpretations that …

Judaism And The Idea Of The Law: Leo Strauss And Yeshayahu Leibowitz's Philosophical And Ideological Interpretations Of Maimonides, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Judaism And The Idea Of The Law: Leo Strauss And Yeshayahu Leibowitz's Philosophical And Ideological Interpretations Of Maimonides, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר
The ideas of the modem Jewish thinkers Leo Strauss and Yeshayahu Leibowitz share a common root. Both men place the interpretation ofMaimonides at the center of their research and their own philosophical statements. Both emphasize the centrality of the Law (halalchah) as the core of Judaism and draw heavily on Maimonides to support their claims. Although Strauss and Leibowitz agree on the centrality of the Law in Maimonidean thought, they differ in interpreting the meaning of the Law in Maimonides. Strauss views the task of the Law as the creation of a political theology and identifies the Maimonidean ideal archetype …
Redemptive Theology In The Thought Of Yeshayahu Leibowitz, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Redemptive Theology In The Thought Of Yeshayahu Leibowitz, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר
Yeshayahu Leibowitz’ concept of redemption is explored by focusing on his essay entitled “Redemption and the Dawn of Redemption”. In a remarkably short span—only three pages—Leibowitz laid out a complex concept of redemption liberally seasoned with irony. The concept of ‘redemption’ is frequently woven into the platforms and credos of many Jewish religious social and political movements. I argue that Leibowitz intended to redeem ‘redemption’ from the grip of any competing Jewish interpretation, and that he perceived all uses other than his own strict interpretation of the word ‘redemption’ as erroneous and idolatrous, and that reclaiming ‘redemption’ impacts the fate …
The Semantics Of Sense Perception In Berkeley, Kenneth L. Pearce
The Semantics Of Sense Perception In Berkeley, Kenneth L. Pearce
Kenneth L Pearce
George Berkeley's linguistic account of sense perception is one of the most central tenets of his philosophy. It is intended as a solution to a wide range of critical issues in both metaphysics and theology. However, it is not clear from Berkeley's writings just how this ‘universal language of the Author of Nature’ is to be interpreted. This paper discusses the nature of the theory of sense perception as language, together with its metaphysical and theological motivations, then proceeds to develop an account of the semantics of the perceptual language, using Berkeley's theory of reference for human language as a …

Understanding interactivity in/between bigraphs and diamonds Grammatologically, the Western notational system is not offering space in itself to place sameness and otherness necessary to realize interaction/ality. Alphabetism is not prepared to challenge the dynamics of interaction directly. The Chinese writing system in its scriptural structuration, is able to place complex differences into itself, necessary for the development and design of formal systems and programming languages of interaction. The challenge of interactionality to Western thinking, modeling and design interactivity has to be confronted with the decline of the scientific power of alpha-numeric notational systems as media of living in a complex …

Droits De L'Homme, Droits Du Citoyen: Les Présupposés De La Jurisprudence Américaine Et Européenne, Gregory Lewkowicz
Gregory Lewkowicz
This paper proposes a comparative analysis of some rulings of the US Supreme Court and of the European Court of Human Rights. Reviewing cases related to international legal problems or using comparative legal reasoning, the paper suggests that the difference of attitudes between the two courts in human rights cases is embedded in the classical opposition between men and citizen.
Heidegger E O Caráter Historial-Político Da Obra De Arte, Andre De Macedo Duarte
Heidegger E O Caráter Historial-Político Da Obra De Arte, Andre De Macedo Duarte
Andre de Macedo Duarte
The text discusses the historial-political character attributed by Heidegger to the artwork in his 1936 essay “The origin of the work of art”. The main argument is that Heidegger’s analysis of the artwork is simultaneously an inquiry into the possibility of a new beginning in history by means of a genuine appropriation of history, a subject-matter that was altogether absent during the project of fundamental ontology. The essay on the artwork is considered as a first step in Heidegger’s formulation of his later thesis concerning Western history as the history of Being. Incidentally, this shift in Heidegger’s understanding of history …

O Acolhimento Silencioso: Ética E Alteridade Em Ser E Tempo, Andre De Macedo Duarte
Andre de Macedo Duarte
Criticizing current interpretations that stress the existential solipsism of the resolute Dasein, the present investigation emphasizes Heidegger’s contribution to the question of the acknowledgment of otherness in Being and Time. The key to uncover the post-metaphysical ethical dimension of the existential analytic is to be found in the theoretical articulation between the phenomenological analysis of anguish and that of the call of conscience. The main argument is that by responsibly hearing to the strange appeal of conscience, resolute Dasein is simultaneously opened to the acknowledgment and welcoming of the other as other.
