Articulating The World: Conceptual Understanding And The Scientific Image, Joseph Rouse Oct 2015

Articulating The World: Conceptual Understanding And The Scientific Image, Joseph Rouse

Joseph Rouse

The most difficult challenge for naturalists in philosophy is accounting for scientific understanding of nature as itself a scientifically intelligible natural phenomenon. This book advances naturalism with a novel response to this challenge, drawing upon the philosophy of scientific practice and interdisciplinary science studies, philosophical work on the normativity of conceptual understanding, and new developments in evolutionary biology. The book’s two parts develop complementary, mutually supporting revisions to familiar accounts of conceptual understanding and of Sellars’s “scientific image” of ourselves-in-the-world. The first part shows how language and scientific practices exemplify the evolutionary process of niche construction. Conceptual capacities arise from …

Philosophy: A Short Visual Introduction, Scott Paeth

Scott R. Paeth

Philosophy: A Short, Visual Introduction is the ideal path to understanding the philosophical ideas that influence Christian theology.

Scott Paeth's fast-paced introduction covers the most important movements and thinkers with precision and clarity. The major ideas are creatively illustrated by artist Joseph Novak, whose crisp, modern style brings big concepts to life for readers.

The result is an articulate, no-nonsense approach that guides readers from the ideas of ancient philosophers to contemporary thinkers and movements that impact Christians today.

Democracy In Transition: Political Participation In The European Union, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

The essays in this collection, written by a cross-regional group of experts, provide illuminating insights into the causes of declining levels of citizen participation and other distinct forms of civic activism in Europe and explore a range of factors contributing to apathy and eventually disengagement from vital political processes and institutions. At the same time, this volume examines informal or unconventional types of civic engagement and political participation corresponding to the rapid advances in culture, technology and social networking. The contents of this volume are divided into three essentially interrelated parts. Part I consists of critical essays in the form …

Studies On The Reception Of Plato, Kyriakos N. Demetriou Mar 2011

Studies On The Reception Of Plato, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

This collection of essays focuses on the reception of Plato and Greek political thought in the work of some major (pre)Victorian classical scholars and expands on a remarkable range of hotly debated issues on the interpretation of Greek antiquity. The central figure in this volume is the radical philosopher, utilitarian, and Platonist George Grote, whose works on the history of Greece and Plato moved away from traditional models of classical interpretation. His works and their background are critically explored in light of his philosophical commitment and political radicalism. Article IV brings to light a forgotten manuscript by Grote, "On the …

In The Reign Of Queen Victoria: Fourteen Texts On Cyprus, 1878-91, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

This volume includes fourteen long neglected texts on the history, anthropology, politics and society of Cyprus during the first decades of the British rule. The volume is informed by a lengthy introduction by K. Demetriou, who examines the contribution of the British to modernizing the island, by introducing political reforms and improving the island’s economy and infrastructure. It also explores and analyses their perceptions of the indigenous population within the context of imperialist culture and racialist prejudices. Thus apart from being primary sources that belong to the a certain literary genre, this collection has sociological, historical and topographical interest, especially …

The Platonic Legend [In Greek], Kyriakos N. Demetriou Jun 2008

The Platonic Legend [In Greek], Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

This is the first study ever on the history of modern Platonic exegesis in Greek, and would hopefully introduce the “Rezeptionsgechichte” discipline into Greek academia. What I am trying to prove is a simple, albeit controversial thesis, namely that the existence of so many conflicting accounts about Plato’s philosophy proves that George Grote’s argument put forward in the 1860s (in a nutshell, that Plato had no distinct philosophical system to establish apart from a consistent aim running through the dialogues, that of expounding a philosophical method -- not a doctrine), is still compellingly legitimate. The existence of many “Platonisms” (in …

Perspectives On The Fears Of Death & Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D. Jan 2006

Perspectives On The Fears Of Death & Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D.

David San Filippo Ph.D.

This E-Book will examine some perspectives on fear, the fears of death, and constructs used to overcome or deal with the fears of death. By examining the literature on fear in general, a framework can be developed to understand how individuals become fearful. In the section, “Fears of Death,” what people fear about death and why they fear it will be discussed.

Historical Perspectives On Attitudes Concerning Death And Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D. Jan 2006

Historical Perspectives On Attitudes Concerning Death And Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D.

David San Filippo Ph.D.

Beliefs and practices concerning death have changed throughout human history. In pre-modern times, death at a young age was common due to living conditions and medical practices. As medical science has advanced and helped humans live longer, attitudes and responses to death also have changed. In modern Western societies, death is often ignored or feared. Changes in lifestyles and improved medical science have depersonalized death and made it an encroachment on life instead of part of life. This has left many people ill equipped to deal with death when it touches their lives.

Evolution And Learning: The Baldwin Effect Reconsidered, David Depew, Bruce Weber Dec 2002

Evolution And Learning: The Baldwin Effect Reconsidered, David Depew, Bruce Weber

David J Depew

The role of genetic inheritance dominates current evolutionary theory. At the end of the nineteenth century, however, several evolutionary theorists independently speculated that learned behaviors could also affect the direction and rate of evolutionary change. This notion was called the Baldwin effect, after the psychologist James Mark Baldwin. In recent years, philosophers and theorists of a variety of ontological and epistemological backgrounds have begun to employ the Baldwin effect in their accounts of the evolutionary emergence of mind and of how mind, through behavior, might affect evolution.

The essays in this book discuss the originally proposed Baldwin effect, how it …

George Grote On Plato And Athenian Democracy: A Study In Classical Reception, Kyriakos N. Demetriou Dec 1999

George Grote On Plato And Athenian Democracy: A Study In Classical Reception, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

George Grote (1794-1871) belonged to the leading Philosophic Radicals of early Victorian Britain. A student of James Mill and Jeremy Bentham, a self-educated classical scholar, and a committed utilitarian liberal, he succeeded in revolutionizing the field of Greek studies. The author draws on both unpublished works of Grote and also a wide range of published material, with emphasis on the History of Greece and Plato and the other Companions of Sokrates, to give us this study of the historian's thought and understanding of classical Greece. The book starts with an examination of Grote's early intellectual influences and then proceeds to …

Darwinism Evolving: Systems Dynamics And The Genealogy Of Natural Selection, David Depew, Bruce Weber Dec 1994

Darwinism Evolving: Systems Dynamics And The Genealogy Of Natural Selection, David Depew, Bruce Weber

David J Depew

Darwinism Evolving examines the Darwinian research tradition in evolutionary biology from its inception to its turbulent present, arguing that recent advances in modeling the nonlinear dynamics of complex systems may well catalyze the next major phase of Darwinian evolutionism. While Darwinism has successfully resisted reduction to physics, the authors point out that it has from the outset developed and applied its core explanatory concept, natural selection, by borrowing models from dynamics, a branch of physics. The recent development of complex systems dynamics may afford Darwinism yet another occasion to expand its explanatory power.Darwinism's use of dynamical models has received insufficient attention …

Pragmatism From Progressivism To Post- Modernism, David Depew, Robert Hollinger Dec 1994

Pragmatism From Progressivism To Post- Modernism, David Depew, Robert Hollinger

David J Depew

American pragmatism can be best understood against the background of 20th-century American culture and politics. The essays in this volume, by philosophers, cultural critics, and historians, explore the development of pragmatism in this context. The emphasis in this volume is on the interrelations between the philosophical or foundational issues raised by pragmatism as a philosophical movement, and the cultural, political, and educational programs that have been associated with pragmatism from James, Dewey, and Mead to Rorty and Cornel West. The book is divided into three parts, reflecting the periods of Progressivism, Positivism, and Postmodernism. The contributors explore the ways in …

Entropy, Information, And Evolution: New Perspectives On Physical And Biological Evolution, David Depew, Bruce Weber Dec 1987

Entropy, Information, And Evolution: New Perspectives On Physical And Biological Evolution, David Depew, Bruce Weber

David J Depew

Can recent developments in thermodynamics and information theory offer a way out of the current crisis in evolutionary theory? One of the most exciting and controversial areas of scientific research in recent years has been the application of the principles of nonequilibrium thermodynamics to the problems of the physical evolution of the universe, the origins of life, the structure and succession of ecological systems, and biological evolution. These sixteen original essays by evolutionists, ecologists, molecular biologists, physical chemists, physicists, and philosophers of science provide the best current summary of this developing research program.Chapters in the book's first part - by …
