Altruism, Impartiality And Moral Demands, Jurgen De Wispelaere Dec 2002

Altruism, Impartiality And Moral Demands, Jurgen De Wispelaere

Jurgen De Wispelaere

Advocates of altruism maintain that altruism is an inherently beneficial and, therefore, morally desirable motivational disposition towards furthering other people’s good. In this paper I dispute this claim by showing various ways in which altruism might come into conflict with plausible moral demands. The underlying problem is always one of moral myopia, an altruistic blind spot that interferes with altruism’s capacity to track moral demands. To resolve the moral dilemmas associated with altruism, I argue, we need to embed altruistic dispositions in a more comprehensive moral framework. I propose that a theory of impartiality might succeed in embedding altruism in …

Bishop Connop Thirlwall: Historian Of Ancient Greece, Kyriakos N. Demetriou Oct 2002

Bishop Connop Thirlwall: Historian Of Ancient Greece, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

The purpose of this article is to revisit and reappraise Connop Thirlwall’s much-neglected 8-volume History of Greece (London, 1835-1844). It is shown that the historical work of the great classicist and theologian represents the practical embodiment of the spirit of transition between partisan and “scientific”, as called at the time, historiography. Constituting a bridge between the old and the new, and having fulfilled its role, Thirlwall’s work was destined to sink into oblivion, virtually obscured in the shadow of George Grote’s Greece.

A 'Legend' In Crisis: The Debate Over Plato's Politics, 1930-1960, Kyriakos N. Demetriou Oct 2002

A 'Legend' In Crisis: The Debate Over Plato's Politics, 1930-1960, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

From the early 1930s to the early 1960s many scholars, whether liberal-minded or socialist ideologues, Marxist or scientific positivists, classical scholars or political theorists and historians, have shown a widespread consensus in discrediting and assailing the man and political philosopher Plato. Such an extensive assault led the ‘Platonic Legend’ to an unprecedented crisis. Philosophically, it was a reaction to the undisguised Platonolatry coming from Oxford and the school of the British Idealists. Ideologically, the appropriation of Plato by Nazi apologists fostered further this vehement indictment. But a lot of other causes worked to the same effect. The general anguish and …

Gifts For The Soul: A Guided Journey Of Discovery, Transformation, And Infinite Possibilities (Book Author, Dawn E. Clark; Book Reviewer, Carroy Ferguson)), Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Dawn E. Clark's Gifts for the Soul is an intriguing self-help book, full of promise and hope for a new way to engage in self-healing and what the author calls soul healing through soul retrieval work. According to the author, the ancient healing tradition of soul retrieval to heal soul loss has been documented by many cultural anthropologists. The tradition apparently has been traced to a belief in the ancient concept of soul loss, embraced by many civilizations and diverse cultures in North America, Australia, Asia, South America and the shaman tradition as far back as 10,000 years ago. Soul …

Epistemologia Sem Sujeito: A Filosofia Das Ciências Proposta Por Karl Popper, Paulo S. Peres

Paulo S. Peres

Straf(Begrip) En Procesbeginsel. (Meaning And Concept Of Punishment And The Principle Of Trial Before Punishment), Mireille Hildebrandt

Mireille Hildebrandt

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison Dec 2001

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Eminent scholar Harry Edwards (2000) has articulated three major realities of African American males in sports: a) The presumption of innate, race-linked black athletic superiority and intellectual deficiency; b) media propaganda portraying sports as a broadly accessible route to African American social and economic mobility; and c) a lack of comparably visible, high-prestige African American role models beyond the sports arena. Driven by labeling theory (Becker, 1963; Goffman, 1959), eight African American male student athletes were surveyed and interviewed. The last two points of Edwards' scholarship were investigated. "We have pretty good historical data and quantitative data about African American …

African American Racial Identity And Sport, Keith Harrison Dec 2001

African American Racial Identity And Sport, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to synthesize and apply African American racial identity theory and related research to the development of sport and physical activity patterns and preferences in African American youth. Historically the African American over-representation in particular sports phenomena has been examined genetically, anthropocentrically, physiologically, sociologically, and psychologically. The profusion of explanations is a testimony to the complexity of this phenomena. This manuscript provides yet another compelling perspective. Cross [(1995) The psychology of Nigrescence: revising the Cross Model, in: J.G. PONTEROTTO et al. (Eds) Handbook of Multicultural Counseling (Thousand Oaks, CA, Sage)] outlines the metamorphic …

Review Of Cheng And Bunin: Contemporary Chinese Philosophy, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2001

Review Of Cheng And Bunin: Contemporary Chinese Philosophy, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

This handsome volume encompasses sixteen essays on leading twentieth-century Chinese philosophers, all specifically written for the collection, as well as an introduction by Bunin and a preface plus two essays (one on more recent trends, the other an over-all interpretation) by Cheng. Each of the main selections includes a bibliography listing the subject’s main works and important studies on the subject, as well as a list of ten discussion questions. The thoughtful design of the collection makes it clear that its goals go beyond simply conveying information: in Bunin’s words, it aims to furnish “a platform for further investigation and …

The Shield Of Achiles, State, Security And New Wars (El Escudo De Aquiles, Estado, Seguridad Y Nuevas Guerras) Spanish, Fernando Estrada Dec 2001

The Shield Of Achiles, State, Security And New Wars (El Escudo De Aquiles, Estado, Seguridad Y Nuevas Guerras) Spanish, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

At this stage of the manifestation of irregular warfare conflicts becomes porous, bottom to top and back. The security of states depends on a weak shield vulnerable to unforeseen terrorist actions. This will not come labeled by a single identity but multiplied their masks, may be a timid bystander who walks the streets at noon sweater dress with a teacher dressed and slow. The security policy imposes severe restrictions on basic freedoms, including perhaps most importantly, individual privacy or family.
