The Tyranny Of Work: Employability And The Neoliberal Assault On Education, Jeff Noonan, Mireille Coral Jan 2015

The Tyranny Of Work: Employability And The Neoliberal Assault On Education, Jeff Noonan, Mireille Coral

Philosophy Publications

This paper explores the ways in which neoliberal schooling is threatening education. We define education as the development of cognitive and imaginative capacities for understanding of and critical engagement with social reality. Education opens horizons of possibility for collective and individual life-experience and activity by exposing the one-sidedness and contradictions of ruling-value systems. Schooling, by contrast, subordinates thought and imagination to the reproduction of the ruling money-value system, narrowing horizons of possibility for collective and individual life to service to the prevailing structure of power. Our paper draws on our overlapping experiences as educators, one in the university system, …

Self-Constraint, Human Freedom, And The Conditions Of Socialist Democracy, Jeff Noonan Dec 2014

Self-Constraint, Human Freedom, And The Conditions Of Socialist Democracy, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

“The re-discovery of Marx,” Marcello Musto argues, “is based on his persistent capacity to explain the present: he remains an indispensible instrument for understanding it and transforming it.” (Musto, 2012, 11-12). It is true that the continuity of problems connecting our world to Marx’s ensures the relevance of historical materialism. At the same time, changes in the structure and scale of capitalism, as well as failures of nineteenth and twentieth century socialism to build a democratic and life-affirming alternative, force twenty-first century socialists to risk new theoretical and practical departures. Yet, nowhere is a consistent ethical-political-economic foundation for twenty-first century …

The Life-Value Of Death Mortality, Finitude, And Meaningful Lives, Jeff Noonan Jan 2013

The Life-Value Of Death Mortality, Finitude, And Meaningful Lives, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

In his seminal reflection on the badness of death, Nagel links it to the permanent loss “of whatever good there is in living.” I will argue, following McMurtry, that “whatever good there is in living” is defined by the life-value of resources, institutions, experiences, and activities. Enjoyed expressions of the human capacities to experience the world, to form relationships, and to act as creative agents are (with important qualifications) intrinsically life-valuable, the reason why anyone would desire to go on living indefinitely. As Nagel argues, “the fact that we will eventually die in a few score years cannot by itself …

Case Classification, Similarities, Spaces Of Reasons, And Coherences, Marcello Guarini Jan 2013

Case Classification, Similarities, Spaces Of Reasons, And Coherences, Marcello Guarini

Philosophy Publications

A simple recurrent artificial neural network (ANN) is used to classify situations as permissible or impermissible. The trained ANN can be understood as having set up a similarity space of cases at the level of its internal or hidden units. An analysis of the network’s internal representations is undertaken using a new visualization technique for state space approaches to understanding similarity. Insights from the literature on moral philosophy pertaining to contributory standards will be used to interpret the state space set up by the ANN as being structured by implicit reasons. The ANN, on its own, is not capable of …

Socialism As A Life-Coherent Society, Jeff Noonan Nov 2011

Socialism As A Life-Coherent Society, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

All varieties of socialism share this trait in common: they are systematic alternatives to capitalism. But why should a systematic alternative to capitalism be necessary? Has it not proven to be the most productive economic system in history? Has it not created social conditions in which the powers of human imagination, creativity, and scientific understanding have grown to wider scope than in any previous society? Has it not enabled human beings to extend their life span and live healthier and more active lives than ever before? Has it not proven extraordinarily plastic, able to solve unforeseen problems in ways that …

Introduction: Life-Value And Social Justice, Jeff Noonan Aug 2011

Introduction: Life-Value And Social Justice, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

Since its publication in 1971, John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice has defined the terrain of political philosophical debate concerning the principles, scope, and material implications of social justice. Social justice for Rawls concerns the principles that govern the operation of major social institutions. Major social institutions structure the lives of citizens by regulating access to the resources and opportunities that the formulation and realization of human projects require. Rawls’ theory of social justice regards major institutions as just when they distribute what he calls “primary goods” in a manner that he regards as egalitarian. Hence, the subsequent social justice …

Use Value, Life Value, And The Future Of Socialism, Jeff Noonan Jan 2011

Use Value, Life Value, And The Future Of Socialism, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

The paper argues that the future of socialism depends upon the category of use value being grounded in a wider and deeper conception of life value. Only as such can it serve as the regulating principle of a future democratic socialist society. Life value is anchored in an understanding of the human life's space-time continuum understood as a continuum of life requirements. The multiple life crises regularly generated by capitalism are crises of its incapacity to adequately satisfy these life requirements. The practical conclusion is that a democratic socialist economy must prioritize the production not of use values as such, …

Can Only Religion Save Us?, Jeff Noonan Jan 2010

Can Only Religion Save Us?, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

This paper will examine the loss of confidence in secular bases for the normative understanding of, and response to, the fundamental social and political problems. The recent arguments of Richard Falk in favour of a religious foundation for a humane globalization will be taken as paradigmatic. While the paper agrees that the normative core of major world religions supports Falk's particular conclusion that religion can provide the content for a universal critique of inhumane global governance, it will conclude that the universal claim that global human solidarity today can only be built on the basis of religious faith does not …

Emotional Arguments: Ancient And Contemporary Views, Leo Groarke Jan 2010

Emotional Arguments: Ancient And Contemporary Views, Leo Groarke

Philosophy Publications

The prodigious development of argumentation theory over the last three decades has raised many issues that challenge some of the long held assumptions that characterize the traditional study of argument. One of these issues is the role of emotion in argument and argument analysis. While rhetoric has, with its emphasis on persuasion, always recognized that emotions play some role determining which arguments we accept and reject, a long tradition sees appeals to emotion as fallacies that violate the standards of rationality and objectivity reason and argument require.

Philosophy At The Service Of History: Marx And The Need For Critical Philosophy Today, Jeff Noonan Jan 2009

Philosophy At The Service Of History: Marx And The Need For Critical Philosophy Today, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

Marx is famous for apparently dismissing the practical role of philosophy. Yet, as accumulating empirical knowledge of growing life-crises proves, the simply availability of facts is insufficient to motivate struggles for fundamental change. So too manifest social crisis. The economic crisis which began in 2008 has indeed motivated social struggles, but nothing on the order of the revolutionary struggles Marx expected. Rather than make Marx irrelevant, however, the absence of global struggles for truly radical change make his early engagement with the role of philosophy more important than ever. This engagement suggests a conception of philosophy as a uniquely practical …

Resources For Research On Analogy: A Multi-Disciplinary Guide, Marcello Guarini, Amy Butchart, Paul Smith, Andrei Moldovan

Philosophy Publications

Work on analogy has been done from a number of disciplinary perspectives throughout the history of Western thought. This work is a multidisciplinary guide to theorizing about analogy. It contains 1,406 references, primarily to journal articles and monographs, and primarily to English language material. classical through to contemporary sources are included. The work is classified into eight different sections (with a number of subsections). A brief introduction to each section is provided. Keywords and key expressions of importance to research on analogy are discussed in the introductory material. Electronic resources for conducting research on analogy are listed as well.

Cosmopolitan Globalism And Human Community, Jeff Noonan Jan 2006

Cosmopolitan Globalism And Human Community, Jeff Noonan

Philosophy Publications

This article argues that the normative foundations and political implications of David Held's cosmopolitan social democracy are insufficient as solutions to the moral and social problems he criticizes. The article develops a life-grounded alternative critique of globalization that roots our ethical duties towards each other in consciousness of our shared needs and capabilities. These ethical duties are best realized in political projects aimed at fundamental long-term transformations in the principles that govern major socio-economic institutions.

Perelman, Informal Logic And The Historicity Of Reason, Christopher Tindale Jan 2006

Perelman, Informal Logic And The Historicity Of Reason, Christopher Tindale

Philosophy Publications

In a posthumous paper, Perelman discusses his decision to bring his theory of argumentation together with rhetoric rather than calling it an informal logic. This is due in part because of the centrality he gives to audience, and in part because of the negative attitude that informal logicians have to rhetoric. In this paper, I explore both of these concerns by way of considering what benefits Perelman’s work can have for informal logic, and what insights the work of informal logicians might bring to the project of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca.
