When The Canon Backfires: Deconstructing The Centrality Of Hannah Arendt To Human Rights Critical Theory, Nicholas Alexander Lynch
When The Canon Backfires: Deconstructing The Centrality Of Hannah Arendt To Human Rights Critical Theory, Nicholas Alexander Lynch
Senior Projects Spring 2017
Hannah Arendt's name and ideas are pervasive in Human Rights critical theory. In fact, Arendt is one of the few scholars we can confidently situate within the Human Rights canon in 2017. Contemporary "re-readings" of The Human Condition and The Origins of Totalitarianism tend to appropriate Arendtian ideas in the attempt to create a theoretical basis for universal rights. Nevertheless, Arendt wrote a defense of racial segregation in the American South, and held personal views that contradict most contemporary notions of social justice. In this paper, I take a deconstructive approach to the reactionary assumptions about humanity and justice that …

The Phallic Woman: A Reexamination Of The Problematics Of Women And Surrealism, Adrienne Anne Chau
The Phallic Woman: A Reexamination Of The Problematics Of Women And Surrealism, Adrienne Anne Chau
Senior Projects Spring 2017
To see a work by a female surrealist is, perhaps, to see surrealistically. In other words, if the canonical, Western accounts of surrealism are what we are accustomed to, then the act of seeing a work of a woman completely disorients our trained familiarity with the movement, which up until the 1970s was left undisturbed. The principles of the movement, founded on the personal investigation of one’s psyche, lent themselves as an opportunity for the surrealist woman to explore the interior sources of her creative imagination. Visual expression of their self-discovery provided a different perspective of modern woman’s world and …

Problems With Using Statistics To Justify Institutional Policies, Justin Shin
Problems With Using Statistics To Justify Institutional Policies, Justin Shin
Senior Projects Spring 2017
It is becoming increasingly common for institutions to use statistics to inform policy decisions. We should be prepared to ask ourselves what regulatory principles should be imposed on institutions that seek to justify certain policies through deference to a statistical analysis. This paper will examine the difficulties that come with using statistics to justify actions, and argue that certain standards of transparency and verifiability should be expected from any institution that seeks to involve a statistical analysis in the formation of policies. I will first use Market Share Liability, an established use of statistics, to draw out what responsibilities an …

Together We’Ll Make Magic: Exploring The Relationship Between Empathy And Literature Using Ruth Ozeki’S “A Tale For The Time Being”, Janet Lindsay Dinozzi-Houser
Senior Projects Spring 2017
My project is devoted to untangling the often-misunderstood and misapplied subject of empathy, particularly as it relates to the reading process. I begin with a brief background of the term’s history and the debate surrounding its use by researchers in the fields of both Psychology and Philosophy of Mind. I then apply this critical understanding of a commonly invoked term to a close reading of contemporary novel A Tale for The Time Being by Japanese-American novelist Ruth Ozeki. Dedicated primarily to the fictional story of Nao Yasutani, a teenage girl struggling with her recent move back to Japan after a …
