Reconsidering The Platonic Cleitophon, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Reconsidering The Platonic Cleitophon, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
This article unravels the riddle of the Platonic "Cleitophon" through an examination of S.R. Slings' "Plato, Clitophon" (Cambridge University Press, 1999). It examines the history of the reception of this dialogue from the 19th century to present day Platonic analytic and interpretative approaches.
Real Time And Relative Indeterminacy In Economic Theory, Mario Rizzo
Real Time And Relative Indeterminacy In Economic Theory, Mario Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
This article develops the implications of a dynamic conception of time for the idea of plan coordination in economics. It traces the development of some philosophical, scientific and economic theories in the twentieth century. A contrast is made with static or Newtonian views of time in economics.
Sharing Job Resources: Ethical Reflections On The Justification Of Basic Income, Jurgen De Wispelaere
Sharing Job Resources: Ethical Reflections On The Justification Of Basic Income, Jurgen De Wispelaere
Jurgen De Wispelaere
Philippe Van Parijs’s ethical justification of basic income is based on the argument that job resources must be shared equally. Underlying this idea are two important claims: (1) all individuals in society hold an ex ante entitlement in job resources and (2) job resources are tradable. First, I present the real-libertarian argument for sharing job resources. Next, I identify and critically review three different objections against this view: the liability objection, the cooperation objection and the parasitism objection. I believe the parasitism objection poses a serious challenge to basic income, and argue that Van Parijs’s most plausible response - based …

Making The Right Identification In The Turing Test, Saul Traiger
Making The Right Identification In The Turing Test, Saul Traiger
Saul Traiger
The test Turing proposed for machine intelligence is usually understood to be a test of whether a computer can fool a human into thinking that the computer is a human. This standard interpretation is rejected in favor of a test based on the Imitation Game introduced by Turing at the beginning of "Computing Machinery and Intelligence."

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer
Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer
Kent D. Palmer
A newly discovered approach to extending General Systems Theory as defined by George Klir through a set of Special Systems is described. General Systems Theory is distinguished from the theory of Meta-systems. Then, a hinge of three special systems is identified between systems and meta-systems. These special systems are defined by algebraic analogies. Anomalous physical phenomena are specified that exemplify the structures defined by the algebraic analogies. The extraordinary efficacious properties of these special systems are explained. These include ultra-efficiency and ultra-effectiveness. These three special systems are called dissipative, autopoietic, and reflexive. They are anomalous within general systems theory and …

“Multicultural Adult Foster Care: An Oregon Case Study”, Jamie P. Ross
Jamie P Ross
Abstract This study is an analysis of an immigrant Romanian family that operates an adult foster care home in a well-established community based health system in Portland, Oregon. The study utilizes categories of elder health and satisfaction identified by elders’ themselves, and include: a. engaged interaction, b. mutual satisfaction in relationships, c. ritual and, d. the reduction of social distance. Little research has been done from the caregivers' standpoints. In addition to the opportunity to reveal the construction of a particular form of immigrant assimilated knowledge, this study also has the potential to contribute to sociological and public philosophy and …
Medicine Through A Feminist Lens, Jamie P. Ross
Medicine Through A Feminist Lens, Jamie P. Ross
Jamie P Ross
Evidence-based research that is planned, performed and distributed with feminist perspectives, premises, and methodologies provides support for the policy efforts and legislative decision-making of service community organizations. Linking this type of medical research to policy facilitates and sustains positive health outcomes in women’s lives. The effectiveness of the legislation can be monitored. Instead of showing that the lack of policy disadvantages women, we can show how policy can reduce disparities. Coordinating policy indicator variables with health indicator variables produces a powerful means for understanding which health indicators need further policy support. I look at the kind of feminist evidenced-based research …

Analogical Reasoning As Translation: The Pragmatics Of Transitivity, Jonathan Yovel
Analogical Reasoning As Translation: The Pragmatics Of Transitivity, Jonathan Yovel
Jonathan Yovel
This paper attempts to examine the underlying structure of analogical reasoning in decision making. The immediate (but not exclusive) context is the form of reasoning commonly seen as prevalent in common-law judicial decision making. Following Wittgenstein and Strawson the paper identifies the problem of the contingency of transitivity of analogical relations as a serious impediment to analogical reasoning. It then proceeds to offer a method of translation that delineates the borders of contingency and analyticity of transitivity in such cases, as well as proposes how these borders may be manipulated. The theoretical insight is to treat analogical relations anaphorically, as …
What Is Contract Law 'About'? Speech Act Theory And A Critique Of 'Skeletal Promises', Jonathan Yovel
What Is Contract Law 'About'? Speech Act Theory And A Critique Of 'Skeletal Promises', Jonathan Yovel
Jonathan Yovel
What is contract law about? One way of looking at it is to conceive of the subject-matter of contract law in terms of promises - just as tort law arguably revolves around the concepts of accident or harm. Much like accidents - first-year law students are taught - promises are out there in the world, to be classified and distinguished so as to privilege some with legal enforceability. There is a language/world of promises, this approach seems to indicate, and a language/world of contracts. It is a main function of contract law to perform translations from the one to the …

Relationships And Universal Energy Laws, Carroy U. Ferguson
Relationships And Universal Energy Laws, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
Relationships are our most intense forms of "mirrors" in the world. They show us in direct and indirect ways how we are using our personal energy systems in what I call our three life spaces. They show us how we consciously and unconsciously employ what some authors have called Universal Energy Laws (see attached descriptions of these laws) to co-create the quality of our relationships. Whether or not we "attract" and/or deal with relationships in conscious or subconscious ways, what I call the "mirror effect" is reflected in our three life spaces—personal life space, societal life space, and global life …
