Tensor Products And Split-Level Architecture: Foundational Issues In The Classicism-Connectionism Debate, Marcello Guarini
Tensor Products And Split-Level Architecture: Foundational Issues In The Classicism-Connectionism Debate, Marcello Guarini
Philosophy Publications
This paper responds to criticisms levelled by Fodor, Pylyshyn and McLaughlin against connectionism. Specifically, I will rebut the charge that connectionists cannot account for representational systematicity without implementing a classical architecture. This will be accomplished by drawing on Paul Smolensky's Tensor Product model of representation and on his insights about split-level architectures.
Logic, Art And Argument, Leo Groarke
Logic, Art And Argument, Leo Groarke
Philosophy Publications
Most informal logic texts and articles assume a verbal account of reasoning which defines "argument" as a set of sentences. The present paper broadens this definition in order to account for "visual arguments" which are communicated with nonverbal visual images. Standard approaches to verbal arguments are extended in a way that allows them to explain and evaluate visual argumentation.
Fallacies In Transition: An Assessment Of The Pragma-Dialectical Perspective, Christopher Tindale
Fallacies In Transition: An Assessment Of The Pragma-Dialectical Perspective, Christopher Tindale
Philosophy Publications
The paper critically investigates the pragma-dialectics of van Eemeren and Grootendorst, particularly the treatment of fallacies. While the pragma-dialectieians claim that dialectics combines the logical and rhetorical approaches to argumentation, it is argued here that the perspective relies heavily on rhetorical features that have been suppressed in the account and that overlooking these features leads to significant problems in the pragma-dialectical perspective. In light of these problems, the author advocates turning attention to a rhetorical account which subsumes the logical and dialectical.
