Enslaved Imaginations: The [Pelagian] Heresy Of Market Fundamentalism And Christian Moral Discernment, Richard Crane

In many respects, the US economy bears little resemblance to a genuine free market system. The economic policy-making process has been captured by powerful interests, resulting in regressive arrangements that redistribute wealth upward. The inequality generated is sanctioned in popular discourse by a confusing of ideal free markets with real world markets. “Market fundamentalism” imagines the market as self-regulating, governed by economic laws inscribed into the natural order, and thus a free and fair system. This rhetoric disguises how the system’s structure favors some at the expense of others.
Evaluating market fundamentalism with a theological lens reveals resemblances to the …

Oh, my. I am the bearer of statistics and trends related to sexual behavior and attitudes – what it is we’re talking about in these days together. God so loved the world... so what is it like, this world that God loves? My grandpa would probably disapprove of starting with conversation about worldly things – he was an American Baptist pastor, fundamentalist, studied under William Bell Riley, and the Bible was almost the only book he read. He’d sometimes try to read the newspaper, but would be so pained by the worldliness, he’d have to set it down.

When Does Human Life Begin? Conception And Ensoulment, Larry Poston, Lindsey Disney
When Does Human Life Begin? Conception And Ensoulment, Larry Poston, Lindsey Disney
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
Is “human life” strictly a biological phenomenon measured from the moment when sperm and egg combine? Or does “human life” not actually begin until the immaterial aspect known as “the soul” appears at some indeterminate point? This essay examines the views held by various adherents of the Christian faith regarding the concepts of “conception” and “ensoulment” and the relation of these views to contemporary ethical issues having to do with abortion, in vitro fertilization, contraception, and stem cell research. The essay discusses the fact that Christians historically have been characterized by a marked lack of unity concerning the teachings of …

It is possible for a person and their environment to be physically identical each day and yet the representational content of their beliefs about color are inverted. Each day they utter the same words, ‘Wow! The colors of everything have switched again today.’ In uttering these words, they express a different proposition each day. This supports the view held by Reichenbach and Carnap that when it comes to representations of colored objects, relations of similarity and difference are fundamental. There are no such things as colors like ‘redness’ and ‘greenness’ apart from the particular things we call red and green.

Against The Epistemic Value Of Prediction Over Accommodation, Robin Collins
Philosphy Educator Scholarship
Being able to make correct novel predictions has long been trumpeted as one of the most important virtues a scientific theory could have. Imre Lakatos (1970, pp. 91-195) has even gone so far as to claim that a research program can supersede its rival only by making some correct novel predictions. Others have based an entire defense of realism on the claim that realism is the only adequate explanation of the success of scientific theories, particularly their success in making correct novel predictions.1 For still others, the ability of the theories of science to make correct novel predictions (and hence …
