The Birth Of A Playwright Through The Evolution Of The One-Act Play Stripped, Bear; The Film Stripped, Bear; And The Full-Length Play American Bear, Larry Michael Mitchell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Birth of a Playwright through the Evolution of the One-act Play Stripped, Bear; the film Stripped, Bear; and the Full-Length Play American Bear follows the inception, birth, and evolution of a ten-minute, one-act, film, and full-length play: three major iterations of the same source material. Through this exploration, the reader will not only see how the work was changed through outside forces such as form and function but internal struggles within a young playwright as he struggles to find a final form for his first major work while attempting to establish himself as a playwright both within the field …
Confused Spaces: Theatricality As A Device For Defining Different Types Of Public Space, Danton Christopher Spina
Confused Spaces: Theatricality As A Device For Defining Different Types Of Public Space, Danton Christopher Spina
Master's Theses
Confused Spaces has come to the conclusion that theatricality can be a device for defining different types of public space. This book aims to define theatricality in architectural terms by taking principles from the disciplines of theater and urban design. It limits the scope of the definition to a specific set of elements of theatricality that include spectacle, transition, flexibility, and compactability. After attempting to define why these elements of theatricality are valid architectural concepts, the text then pushes to understand the experience that these elements can create. Through the use of historical and contemporary references, an argument for theatricality …

The Application Of The Matching Hypothesis To The Group Theater And The Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Kaela M. Altman
The Application Of The Matching Hypothesis To The Group Theater And The Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Kaela M. Altman
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Understanding the motivations behind volunteerism is a crucial part of building an arts organization. Engaging volunteers requires a particular management style in order to ensure the enlistment of the appropriate people to engage in activities best suited to their skill set. This approach is called the matching hypothesis, and it is defined as matching volunteers' responsibilities to their interests and motivations. Identifying the appropriate volunteers and matching them to their interests can help maintain engagement in the work required to build an organization. Using this approach, it is hypothesized that volunteers will be more likely to fulfill the tasks and …
Review: 'The Philosophical Aesthetics Of Dance: Identity, Performance, And Understanding', Aili W. Bresnahan
Review: 'The Philosophical Aesthetics Of Dance: Identity, Performance, And Understanding', Aili W. Bresnahan
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Graham McFee is one of the few philosophers who can be credited with helping to pioneer and forge a path for dance as a fine art in the field of analytic aesthetics. His 1992 book, Understanding Dance, following Francis Sparshott’s 1988 book Off the Ground: First Steps to a Philosophical Consideration of the Dance, was a significant introductory step toward situating dance in a field that has traditionally focused primarily and nearly exclusively on painting, sculpture, literature, and (more recently) music.
In general dance has not been taken seriously as a legitimate art form by the philosophic academy; indeed, it …

The aim of this dissertation is to present my play, Flamingo & Decatur, to the thesis committee, to illuminate the process of writing it, and to place it within the context of the entire body of dramatic writing I've done here at the University of Arkansas.

Projection Based Design: A Collection Of Acquired Knowledge, Max Brown
Projection Based Design: A Collection Of Acquired Knowledge, Max Brown
Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies
The application of new technology in a classic medium, such as theatre, can be a strong force in creating a unique experience for both the audience and the designer. At first, introducing new media techniques may seem like a novelty and easily dismissed as a gimmick. The fact is the modern audience is more familiar with information displayed in video format and will find projected video elements implemented into the scenic design as another way to access the story the performers on stage are trying to convey. It is our duty as designers to utilize every tool at our disposal …
A Mind's Menagerie: The Process Of Projecting The Mind Of A Genius Onto A Stage, Matthew F. Wilson
A Mind's Menagerie: The Process Of Projecting The Mind Of A Genius Onto A Stage, Matthew F. Wilson
Matthew Wilson
Tennessee Williams is one of the most famous American playwrights of all time. His language along with his portrayal of themes of desire and things that could have been are the things that for so long have captivated his readers, and his audiences alike. Like most, I am not immune to the genius of this fantastic playwright. The inspiration for my piece A Mind’s Menagerie grew from a seed that was implanted deep within my brain many months ago, while reading his arguably most successful play A Streetcar Named Desire. There is a small four page reading in the end …

Shimmers Of Truth In The Art Of Theatre, Natasha M. Goetz
Shimmers Of Truth In The Art Of Theatre, Natasha M. Goetz
Senior Honors Theses
Many Christians have noted Romans 1:20’s statement that God is reflected in His creation. As a theater student, I have found this to be true even in how theatrical artists actually execute their craft. Thus, for my senior honors thesis I have decided to further study this connection between the Lord and theater, for which I expect to find more of what I have already found in parallels between the Christian walk and theater arts. For the completion of this thesis, research for theatrical content will include acting and design, and research for biblical content will include the Bible and …

The Making Of Disgrace Kelly: Dragging The Diva Through Cabarets, Pubs And Into The Recital Hall, Caitlin Cassidy
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research project investigates the synthesis of cabaret and recital performance as a way to re-invigorate the recital as a performance platform. As a curious classical singer with a passion for cabaret, I have explored cabaret in my own creative practice as a classically trained opera singer through the employment of practice-led research methodologies. This project includes research manifested in rehearsals, performance and exegetical writing, including a unique self-reflexive voice in the writing style, to encompass a practice-led research methodology. The culmination of these approaches was a final performance program entitled Diva Bites the Dust. A study of the diva …

Tackling vital issues of politics, identity and experience in performance, this book asks what Shakespeare's plays mean when extended beyond the English language. From April to June 2012 the Globe to Globe Festival offered the unprecedented opportunity to see all of Shakespeare's plays performed in many different world languages. Thirty-eight productions from around the globe were presented in six weeks as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, which formed a cornerstone of the Cultural Olympics. This book provides the only complete critical record of that event, drawing together an internationally renowned group of scholars of Shakespeare and world theatre with …
