Ancient Mesopotamian Music, The Politics Of Reconstruction, And Extreme Early Music, Samuel N. Dorf Jan 2020

Ancient Mesopotamian Music, The Politics Of Reconstruction, And Extreme Early Music, Samuel N. Dorf

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

I write this piece primarily as a musicologist and amateur early music practitioner (viola da gamba player) who tries to understand the ways twentieth- and twenty-first century musicians and scholars have imagined and performed ancient music and dance. This essay emerged from my book project Performing Antiquity: Ancient Greek Music and Dance from Paris to Delphi, 1890-1935 and brings my training as a historical musicologist and dance historian to bear on issues typically of concern to archaeologists, classicists, and linguists.

While working on that book, I kept running across a number of individuals working now who are deeply engaged in …

Glenn Medeiros, president of Saint Louis School, a Marianist school in Honolulu, Hawaii, wrote this song after the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. This music video depicts Saint Louis School’s long history with French Catholics who settled in Hawaii and founded the school in 1846. In 2016, Saint Louis School celebrated 170 years in Hawaii. This song is a tribute to the school’s founders and its thousands of students.

Metal And Gothic Literature: Examining The Darker Side Of Life (And Death), Bryan Bardine Jun 2015

Metal And Gothic Literature: Examining The Darker Side Of Life (And Death), Bryan Bardine

English Faculty Publications

This article examines the connections between Gothic literature and the lyrics in Death metal music, specifically the lyrics of Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, and Deicide. The study examined the lyrics for each band’s first 3 albums and their most recent three albums, looking for Gothic characteristics. Further, the study aims to see if bands are changing their focus in terms of lyrics over the span of their careers — especially in terms of the Gothic tenets they incorporate into their songs and how they connect to traditional Gothic texts. This study continues the research begun in the article appearing in …

Implications Of Embodied Cognition And Schema Theory For Discerning Potential Meanings Of Improvised Rhythm, James Hiller Jan 2012

Implications Of Embodied Cognition And Schema Theory For Discerning Potential Meanings Of Improvised Rhythm, James Hiller

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

Rhythm is an essential and therefore indispensable aspect of all music. Arguably, rhythmic elements are the most accessible of all the musical elements for clients in music therapy to produce and manipulate expressively (Hiller, 2011). Yet, theoretical understanding of rhythm and its use in musical expression is a neglected area of both music therapy (Bunt, 1994; Daveson & Skewes, 2002) and musicological inquiry (Gabrielsson, 1993; Kramer, 1988; Mead, 1999). However, the area of psychological investigation known as “embodied cognition” or “schema theory,” which has been constructively applied to composed tonal music, may prove fruitful in deepening our understanding of potential …

Reading Music: Representing Female Performance In Nineteenth-Century British Piano Method Books And Novels, Laura Vorachek Jan 2010

Reading Music: Representing Female Performance In Nineteenth-Century British Piano Method Books And Novels, Laura Vorachek

English Faculty Publications

The editorial content of piano method books published in the nineteenth century contributed to the gendering of the domestic piano by targeting a middle-class female audience. At the same time, these tutorials circumscribed the ability and ambition of female pianists, cautioning women against technical display or performing challenging pieces in company, thereby reinforcing the stereotype of the graceful, demure woman who played a little. However, this effort was complicated by both the tutorials themselves and contemporary fiction. The middle-class women reading these tutorials also read novels—a fact the method books occasionally acknowledge—which often presented a very different picture of women’s …

Music Therapy Improvisation For Groups: Essential Leadership Competencies, Susan Gardstrom Jan 2007

Music Therapy Improvisation For Groups: Essential Leadership Competencies, Susan Gardstrom

Music Faculty Publications

This book contains 80 exercises designed to reinforce a variety of competencies. Exercises represent three types of learning that have emerged as invariable aspects of the introductory course:

  • Didactic learning
  • Experiential learning
  • Independent skill development

Didactic learning relates to philosophical, theoretical, and/or practical information that is communicated via lecture, discussion, and modeling.

Experiential learning refers to the students' firsthand experiences in the learning/therapy group process that accompanies didactic instruction. In this form of learning, students have opportunities to observe, participate in, co-lead, lead, and verbally process improvisation experiences.

In independent skill development, students engage in skill-building experiences independently and with …
