Linguoculturological Aspect Of Translating Realias, Shoira Isaeva Independent Researcher

Philology Matters

This article examines the specificity of translation of realias – linguistic units reflecting national life, which are generally studied in linguoculturology. Cultural linguistics as a branch of linguistics was formed in the 1990s at the intersection of linguistics and cultural studies and explores the manifestations of the culture of people, which are reflected and entrenched in the language. The idea that language and culture are interrelated and culture manifests itself in language, in general, belongs to V. von Humboldt, but only in recent years, linguoculturology began to develop actively, and its terms such as the linguistic picture of the world, …

Language As A Phenomenon Of Culture, Denis Elkin Independent Researcher

The article attempts to analyze the correlative relationships of language and culture. Language can be considered as an instrument of culture, as one of its components and, on this basis, described through features common to all cultural phenomena. On the other hand, language and culture can be compared as an independent, autonomous semiotic system. The interaction of languages and cultures - this is an objective law of social and historical development of mankind. Any text in the conditions of real communication bears traces of the culture of the people speaking this language. The isolation from the real conditions of the …

The Bidirectional Relationship Between Art And Business, Hannah Brletich

Information Systems Undergraduate Honors Theses

There has long been an established relationship between art and business, finding its roots in the Industrial Revolution when the effects of arts on the economy were first explored. Since then, creative economies have been influenced by adaptation of businesses through urban development and revitalization and by continuous growth in artistic and cultural spaces. Capturing the relationship between arts and urban design, cultural districts establish strong economic communities within vastly creative, business- and culture-centered spaces. Current research provides insight to the economic, social, and cultural outcomes of creative economies.

As a contribution to that narrative, I will use this analysis …

Bella Figura: Understanding Italian Communication In Local And Transatlantic Contexts, Denise Scannell Guida

Publications and Research

Bella figura—beautiful figure—is an idiomatic expression used to reflect every part of Italian life. The phrase appears in travel books and in transnational business guides to describe Italian customs, in sociological research to describe the national characteristics of Italians, and in popular culture to depict thematic constructs and stereotypes, such as the Mafia, romance, and la dolce vita. Scholarly research on bella figura indicates its significance in Italian civilization, yet it remains one of the most elusive concepts to translate. Among the various interpretations and references from foreigners and Italians there is not a single definition that captures the …

Around The World In 18 Songs, Elizabeth Rickel

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

For my research project, I will be creating a concert of 18 songs in 18 different languages. The questions I will attempt to answer through my research are "What makes art and folk songs so important to their respective cultures?", "How are they similar to each other?", "How are they different?" "What is is about this kind of music that is enjoyed by many, no matter the origin of the person or piece?" The motivation for this project is to shine light on some lesser-known folk pieces, build upon my two passions (Music and Languages), and to illustrate the power …
