Potret Penghulu Dalam Naskah; Sebuah Pengalaman Penelitian, Muhamad Hisyam
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In the daily life of the Indonesian people, a penghulu plays a role in accordance with the way the word is understood by the community in which he lives. In West Sumatra, a penghulu is the head of the nagari. In Riau, he has a status equal to that of a head of a village. In Java, he has an authority in all administrative matters of religion. This paper discusses the meaning of penghulu as depicted in old manuscripts written by the natives. Based on a research on these native manuscripts, it can be concluded that a penghulu plays the …

Penyalinan Naskah Melayu Di Palembang; Upaya Mengungkap Sejarah Penyalinan, Maria Indra Rukmi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In Palembang manuscripts are known to be available originating in the Palembang Palace as well as individual collection. This paper discusses the tradition of copying manuscript in Palembang, beginning with the historical background of Palembang, continuing with Malay manuscript copying in Palembang, and with a limited information on the content of the manuscript. Cultural diversity in Palembang where Javanese, Chinese, Arab elements are found, as well as those of the aristocrats and the common people, have impacted on the social lives of the people of Palembang. This diversity is reflected in the manuscripts that have been preserved, including those originating …

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

Kutukan Dan Berkah Dalam Cerita Jawa Kuna; Sebuah Refleksi Sikap Arogan Para Pemilik Kekuasaan, Dwi Woro Retno
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Old Javanese tales like Adiparwa and Sudamala are full of elements of curse cast by a man or a god. The curses take the form of words uttered full of emotion and anger to the addressee. Curses may result in a physical transformation or a change in the fate of the person cursed. A curse cast by a god demonstrates the power. A curse, however, eventually produces blessing. Curse and blessing are two things that are different from and opposite to one another.

Kepustakawanan Dalam "The Name Of The Rose" Karya Umberto Eco, Laksmi Laksmi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time-in the novel-based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from "library", "development system", "collection handling", which includes "classification", "censorship system" and "librarians' professionalism", until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements …

Naskah Dan Rekonstruksi Sejarah Lokal Islam; Contoh Kasus Dari Minangkabau, Oman Fathurahman
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Manuscripts are not supposed to be something unknown to the public and possessed by limited circle of people. Manuscripts are cultural heritage of a nation the content of which reflects the ideas, knowledge, tradition, and the patterns of behavior of the past society. As such they can be of use to different segments of society. This paper discusses the benefits of manuscripts to the efforts of reconstructing Islamic intellectual history in Indonesia by studying the case of local manuscripts in the Minang region. These manuscripts are not only the products of a writing tradition that had developed strongly in the …

Trials And Tribulations: As Found In The Journals Of Samuel Kirkland, Christine Sternberg Patrick
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
By day I edit the papers of George Washington, one of those increasingly popular dead white men. But on nights and weekends I spend my time with Samuel Kirkland, a not-so-popular dead white man whom I would classify as above-average. I was first introduced to Kirkland in the 1980s, and shortly thereafter I made him the topic of my dissertation. Although some might describe him as a "dour Presbyterian," I find him fascinating.
By now I am sure that most readers are wondering, who is Samuel Kirkland? and, why is he above-average? So let me briefly answer these questions before …

Notes--Putting Materials On The Web: A Primer For Editors, Felicia Johnson
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
Creating a web site begins with the collection of resources, either primary or secondary or a combination of the two. Before resources can be identified as valuable and pertinent to continued scholarly research in a specific area and made available on the web, several different kinds of people invested in the project meet to discuss goals and objectives. First, everyone in the group acknowledges the relevance and importance of the resources and agrees that making the resources more accessible on the web will enhance research in that area. Then, the group takes on the task of getting the materials on …
A Note On Identifying Source Materials, Robert Scott Davis
A Note On Identifying Source Materials, Robert Scott Davis
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
Documentary editing relies on the correct and complete identification of the authorship of documents and imprints. Fraud and misidentification can occur, however, even when authorship is authenticated because a writer can create a document to mislead, such as trying to give the text undeserved authority and credibility or to present an alternative version of a particular event.

Editing Military History In The Twenty-First Century, Edward G. Lengel
Editing Military History In The Twenty-First Century, Edward G. Lengel
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
Military historians are not usually accused of worrying about trendiness. More typically they seem like stodgy traditionalists, scoffing at postmodernism and its various spin-offs and fantasizing about putting Foucault in the path of a cannonball at Gettysburg and shouting, "Deconstruct this!" At academic conferences and in university departments, military historians are outsiders: stubbornly following tales of great battles and dead white males while their presumably more "relevant" colleagues don red berets and scribble manifestos in smoke-filled rooms. Documentary editors who work in military history are, if anything, doubly outsiders: fearing either to venture into social history, or to join traditional …

More Than "Rum, Buggery, And The Lash": Social History In American Naval Documents, Michael J. Crawford
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
This essay, however, charts a course to some neglected aspects of the social history of the American sailing navy and urges social historians to cruise in less frequented seas. These aspects include: women; hygiene; patronage of officers toward warrant and petty officers and ratings; and the life-course of warrant and petty officers.

Clouted By Reviewers: The Texts Of Garland's Rose Of Dutcher's Coolly, Keith Newlin
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
Although Hamlin Garland made his mark primarily as a writer of innovative realistic short stories in the 1890s, he also wrote some nineteen novels, almost none of which ever attained the critical acclaim of his first collection of short stories, Main-Travelled Roads, published in 1891. The single exception is Rose of Dutcher's Coolly, his fifth novel and tenth book, published four years later. The novel traces the development of . a motherless girl from her childhood on a small farm in a Wisconsin coulee (a "coulee" or "coolly" is the French term for the deep valleys between high ridges in …

George C. Marshall And The "Squeakings Of Democracy", Larry I. Bland
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
Given the all-pervasive nature of World War II's impact on American society, scores of socio-cultural history topics might profitably be studied using the published papers of U.S. Army Chief of Staff George Catlett Marshall. Examples of the kinds of issues Marshall had to deal with include where, how, and with what the United States should fight; the role of women in the war effort; racial segregation and social mores in the army and surrounding its camps; who was required to fight, why they did so, and what they got out of doing it; who was permitted to become an officer; …

Acquisition Of Violations Of English Principle B By Native Speakers Of Japanese Or Chinese, Clarion C. Mendes
Acquisition Of Violations Of English Principle B By Native Speakers Of Japanese Or Chinese, Clarion C. Mendes
Honors Capstone Projects - All
This work focuses on Principles A and B of Binding Theory as applied to English. While English has a very strict interpretation of Binding Theory, it has a violation of Principle B with sentences with locative prepositional phrases and verb phrases of caused movement or perception.
In contrast, Chinese and Japanese have a very liberal interpretation of Binding Theory. The study is involved with investigating whether or not Japanese or Chinese speakers adapt to the English violation which is typically not taught in a classroom setting, but something acquired through natural exposure.
A custom survey was designed to see if …
