Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest
The Pecos Valley Series is an oral history project developed over two years whose aim was to capture the cultural practices in agriculture and activism that is evident to the cultural identities of the northern New Mexico region. Participants include folks whose family genealogy has been tied to the Valley for hundreds of years, while also including transplant perspectives to demonstrate the complexity of placemaking. The Pecos Valley Series, was produced in what Nuevo Mexicano scholars term Querencia- a deep love for place and its history. On March 25th, 2021 a Master’s student in American Studies (Leo Williams) at the University of New Mexico met with the Philly Death Doula Collective over Zoom. The current members of the collective are Lori Zaspel, Kai Wonder, and Nicki Cowan, social workers, and Death Doulas living in Philadelphia. In this oral history interview, the collective speaks to their vision of death care infrastructure, their goals and services as a collective, how COVID-19 has affected them, and their relationship to death positive activism.

McKenna Johnston and Leo Williams met over Zoom on February 23rd, 2021. At the time of the interview, New Mexico’s Bernalillo County had advanced to the Yellow COVID tier. It had been nearly a year since the COVID-19 pandemic had shifted the world to increasingly rely on virtual platforms. Since March 13th, 2020, McKenna had been participating in classes at the University of New Mexico over Zoom. In this interview, she speaks to her experience navigating the past year through virtual platforms.

I had the pleasure of interviewing one of my classmates, Henry Hamal regarding his experience during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was interesting to note that this event had a shunting effect on Henry’s emotional development, as he noted in his interview. It was helpful to see a different perspective regarding people’s ability to adapt, or not, to a global crisis.
