The Promethean, Volume 05, Number 01, Fall 1996, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

Welcome to the all new, mostly different, Promethean

If you paid any attention to anything over the course of the past semester, you probably saw or heard something about a "big double issue" of The Promethean coming in March." If so, you may be just a wee bit confused right about now, and I don't really blame you. This isn't the double issue, and none of the publicity ever said anything about an end-of-semester issue this term.

You may also be wondering about Manna, which until recently was the student newspaper here at Concordia, and why there hasn't been an …

The Promethean, Volume 04, Number 02, Spring 1996, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

Ah, spring. The time of year when a young man's thoughts turn to thoughts of how to fill this page without lapsing into meaningless babble. And love--but at the moment, that isn't foremost on my mind.

Modern technology is often a wonderful thing. Oh, sure, I know it has its critics--most notably that Unabomber guy--but most people tend to agree that it tends to be useful most of the time. A perfect example is this issue's cover. If you haven't seen it yet, go ahead and sneak a peek now. I'll wait.

. . . . . . .

See, …

How I Got Gnarly, Rudy Rucker May 1996

How I Got Gnarly, Rudy Rucker

SWITCH

The article describes how Rudy Rucker’s curious interest in celluar automata led to his career in mathematical computer science at San José State University. After conducting interviews on the theory of cellular automata as a freelance writer, he felt compelled to be involved in this great intellectual revolution in computer-aided experimental mathematics. Committed to reinventing himself, Rucker's interactions with mathematicians inspired him to write “Mind Tools”, a book that surveys mathematics from the standpoint that is information. After publishing his book, in 1987, he was eventually offered a position at SJSU in the Mathematics and Computer Science department. With assistance …

12 Monkeys, Collette Sweeney May 1996

12 Monkeys, Collette Sweeney

SWITCH

The article depicts the visual and conceptual significance of the film “12 Monkeys”, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. In this film, movie genres and tropes are called into question. Terry Gilliam presents a visions of the future, but relies on the conventions of the American Western Formula. Gilliam tales a distinct approach to typical characters, allowing his proragonists to become onlookers to the foreboding issue at play. What Gilliam achieves in his 12 Monkeys is making the viewers “entertain” that the future depicted in the movie may be seen as a warning.

New Tricks

Welcome to the latest issue of New Tricks, a literary magazine published by the DSU chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an international honor society for English students. Literary magazines, showcasing talents of DSU students and faculty, have been published intermittently by DSU organizations. In 1995 Sigma Tau Delta chose the magazine as its major project, along with several activities emphasizing literary appreciation. This project has been made possible through the efforts of several already very busy people. We would like to thank all the students and faculty who submitted their works. We extend special thanks to James Swanson and …

A Home Of Her Own: (Writing) A Family Story Of Separation And Second Chances, Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D. Apr 1996

A Home Of Her Own: (Writing) A Family Story Of Separation And Second Chances, Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

On March 16, 1996, I interviewed my mother, Beth Tillmann, about her parents' divorce and her life as a foster child. From detailed notes taken during our phone conversation and from family stories told to me throughout my life, I constructed a narrative titled "A Home of Her Own." Its structure and tone mimic the way my mother speaks about the dissolution of her family of origin and her attachments to and separations from those who tried to help her rebuild a sense of home. After the story, I discuss what narrative representations of loss offer the writer, the participant, …
